Default Place for a nerdy camgirl?

Hi there! I’m new to camming, I posted here a couple of times a few years ago but FINALLY started camming today, cammed on Streamate for about forty minutes, didn’t make any money but oh well, it was my first, short proof to myself that I can actually do this! (...And I got a bunch of comments that I need a better webcam. Yes, I know, rrrgh! It’s my first priority with my camgirl money, but I have to make some money first... (sigh))

So, I was talking about this stuff to my girlfriend (she’s helping me with this project), how I have to go on cam and idle sexily and try to get customers to tip me and take me to premium chat or whatever, and she said... maybe I’m going to the wrong place trying to be at a “mainstream” site like Streamate. I’m autistic and something of a nerd, so she thought perhaps my best bet would be a site where I could play my 3DS, read comic books, or other such nerdy things that I already do, and that could be my on-cam idling for when I’m hoping to draw in customers (in this case, customers who are looking for a nerdy girl). Also, because I’m autistic I’m not socially normal in my behavior—in my case, I act something like a cross between a hypersexual teen girl and a child who just won her first science fair. That’s something that might not fly with a mainstream audience, but, in my experience, is pure gold to the nerdy crowd.

(I should probably note that I’m non-op transsexual; I originally figured “enthusiastic, exhibitionistic trans girl” would be enough of an angle for me to work, but now it seems I’m going to have to expand my vision a little.)

So, please tell me if there’s a site you would recommend based on what I’ve said, any angles I should work, etc. I was born to work in the sex industry, this is my chance to prove it, to myself and the world. I want to a be a big success once I find the right niche Thanks!

I'd say probably a token based site would be best for you. Dudes tend to like the quirkiness that's often found at those types of sites and you can let your personality out a bit more there. Not sure if "sexy idling" is going to work there though, as those sites usually require a lot of audience interaction. I'm not sure if MFC allows trans girls or not, but if not, Chaturbate or Cam4 might be good options for you. Or you could try indy camming. With indy camming, you wouldn't be sitting around in free chat because you'd basically be waiting for people to buy skype sessions from you. BUT that does require a lot of promo on your part. It might be best to grow a following on a bigger cam site before making the move to indy. I'm not sure if there's much in the way of niche nerdy sites, but if there is, there might not be much traffic as it would probably not be very well known.

And also of course, there's always clips4sale where you can film videos of yourself doing nerdy things then sell them.

    Good luck!

You shoudl read "The 'Sick Girls' Camming Club" thread. You will see how many special people there are among us and that it doesn't take a specific site type/strategy.
I personally wouldn't recommend token sites if you are introverted or self-conscious. You will have to interact and entertain a lot and the audience tends to be very aggressive on there. As the sites are basically free to watch, there are lots of trolls and entitled cheapasses who have every opportunity to record your show without paying a dime or gang up against you. For me, SM has been the best, but it's very demanding when it comes to the equipment.

One of THE top models on MFC is super nerdy. She has a 'Brony Club' for a fan club, waifu pillow, does these really wacky nerdy theme nights... she's one of my favorite models to creep on. Her room is always like a carnival and she's massively appealing. She's one of the few top models on MFC that isn't like supermodel hot (not to bash on her- I just mean she has a unique look and is curvy) so it is almost certainly a niche with tons of potential customers. Don't mean to stereotype cam clients, but in my experience the vast majority of them aren't like, super outgoing and attractive alpha males- many of them are introverted/shy, and yes, many are typically geeky.

On top of that, I agree with the token site suggestion. If you aren't conventionally super hot and sociable and aren't willing to invest money in a few good photosets, videos, and a graphic designer for your MFC page it is a tough egg to crack, that site is overrun with more 'professional' models than other sites. Basically it's for full-timers. Chaturbate seems like it'd be a good fit for you though!
    G-spot rocks the G-spot.

Thanks for all your suggestions Keep ’em coming!

I suppose I’m not so much “shy” as I’m bad at picking up social rules or cues. The thought of masturbating for strangers giving me money is, quite honestly, _hot_ to me (I guess that’s why I thought to be a camgirl). Perfoming on stage, for crowds, etc. comes naturally to me, but making smalltalk with potential clients and figuring out how to get them into paid chat... I’d probably need a flowchart and a strategy guide not to be afraid of it. Where another person might “get the hang” of a social situation I usually flounder around without a clue... (That’s not to say I’m not up for learning “the hustle,” just that I might require more guidance than most people would, and I’m trying to play to my strengths rather than my weaknesses...)

Hey, welcome! I'm also autistic, and there're more of us around, though I'll let them emerge if they feel like it.

Having a flowchart is a solid strategy. Bear in mind that you don't have to be subtle about getting them into pvt, it's OK to just say something along the lines of "let's play in private". It's also OK to ignore or kick them out if they're not following your script.

My script for SM when I first started out, in case it helps:
    - ask him how he is
    - "mmm, really? what brings you here today?" / "what kind of show are you looking for?"
[he may ask you whether you have a particular outfit or do a particular thing]
    - "lovely, we should play"

That's it! Basically, if he doesn't start making paying noises after this, you don't have to pay any more attention to him. If I'm in a pissy mood, I'll even block people after this point.

When you develop regulars, you may want to chat to them about this and that, but it'll come in its own time.

Personally I do better on private-based than token-based sites because crowds are my nightmare, but hey, try them out.

PS If you decide to go the token route, as far as I know, MFC doesn't host trans performers, but CB does.

    MFC/CB

For token sites you don't need a flowchart when it comes to making money. I personally tend to make more when I stop thinking about getting money. The Law of Attraction works great for camming because you put yourself in the mindset of attracting the abundance rather than pushing money out of people. It's actually detrimental to earning potential when you start feeling entitled. Guys sense that all you want is their money. Having a connection and a chemistry with your customer is the most important part of sales. Making your room fun with games, countdowns and having a lot of things for sale keep things interesting, engaging and happy. Endorse all of your skills and talents eg. playing an instrument, reciting erotica etc.

Have a tip menu, offer vids and photosets and make your profile clear and easily legible. Too many cam girls on MFC have profiles that are beautiful to look at but difficult to scan quickly and read legibly. Think about the guy who has one hand on his dick and the other scrolling through your profile when you design your graphics.

    Streamate/Private-based sites

On private based sites it's more about presentation. You need to feel really good about how you look and the image you are projecting and you also need the computing power to ensure you are streaming at the highest quality possible because that's what gives you quick placement bonuses. I find you also need a consistent niche to really attract the regulars and be very clear about your limits, what you will and will not do in premium versus exclusive. For Gold shows, it helps to actually be repetitive and offer consistently the same type of show. These are my tips for succeeding on Streamate type sites but, these suggestions are not set it stone and many girls succeed regardless of what I think does well. There are customers for every type of girl whether she is on the token sites or the private based sites. What makes a top girl on any site can really vary. I disagree that you have to look like a supermodel to make it on MFC. It's only because the fashion/porn industry has idolized a certain look so girls who have those traits seem to be more confident. However, a girl who can truly say "fuck it" to that commercial/bubble gum bullshit and embrace her so-called "flaws" and truly be confident can succeed far beyond girls who are conventionally pretty and have no personality.

In my opinion, guys who just want to get off quickly go to private based sites. Some guys go to private based sites because they offer more of a one-to-one interaction at a better price than for top girls who are on token sites. It varies from guy to guy but that seems to be the majority consensus.

I think that's why a lot of us feel nerdy/geeky types do better on token sites because guys who like those types of sites tend to look for the whole picture when it comes to the girls they desire.

Thaaaaank you DancesWithSloths! I guess something like that is what I needed most. Thanks to the rest of y’all for your advice, too.

One question: what do you mean by “token-based sites”? I’m imagining a camming version of Chuck E. Cheese

    Ha!

MyFreeCams and Chaturbate are the most popular token sites right now. Cam4 is also somewhat popular. These are sites where most of the action happens in free chat where you can set up ways for guys to tip you for doing stuff and for meeting countdown goals. The payout on token sites is higher at around 50% versus private sites where the payout is 35% or lower. Chaturbate has cool apps that help with getting tips.

    Hi Pink!

    Another Autie here

I say "hi" to them, maybe wave, if they've paid me money before I'll look especially pleased to see them. I'll have trivia quizzes and chat and in between questions I'll ask if anyone fancies a private "because now would be a good time".

That is, I never directly ask for the sale from an individual guy (I don't like rejection and he won't like being cornered) but if anyone wants to make a purchase I have given specific permission for them to interrupt and do so. I try to spread my attention between everyone, without overwhelming the quieter ones, and I only boot people for upsetting the ambience. I never boot people for saying nothing. I never boot people for hanging out without buying - non-speakers or non-buyers might be foreign or disabled and anyway, just being there adds to the room count and makes me look popular.

If it has been too long since I last earned anything I say "I'll be off in five minutes if no-one wants a private, but I'll be back in an hour". This actual understandable hard quantifiable predictable behavior on my part is appreciated by guys, it seems. They know exactly what they have to do if they want to see the goods, they know how long they have to do it in, and they know when their next window of opportunity will occur.

That's how I do it. It is a non-hustle in the sense that there's no specific pitch, I'm not pretending anything, there is no angle - just an emphasis on the user experience of being in my cam room.

If I make a social faux pas, I apologize and point out I'm on the spectrum. Then someone always says "Oh that was nothing - you shoulda seen the time when I $whateverdisaster..!"

    I do like guys

Basically, what I'm doing is taking Quentin Crisp's advice on Style. I'm being myself <i>but on purpose</i>.

    Thanks, IcicleInLondon

I’ve taken a look at Chaturbate and, holy moly that looks like a site where I could have a _blast_ (and make a bundle) if I know what I’m doing. ...Of course, the trick is knowing what I’m doing It looks like I need to know when to show my goods, when to tease, when to hold back, etc., and ride that wave of horniness into moneytown. That’s a skill I absolutely need to learn (’cause I want to be a stripper, remember), but it’s a tough one since it’s not something I can simplify to “tease in public, show in private” like on Streamate.

By the way, the reason I mentioned wanting a flowchart (though I never expected anyone would actually provide one—thanks _so_ much, DancesWithSloths!) is because I can’t operate on generalizations like the Law of Attraction because my problem isn’t one of attitude, it’s one of literally not necessarily knowing what to do in an any given time or situation on a basic level. When camming, I need to be able to stay ahead of the game to make money (I can imagine, anyway); that means knowing what situation I’m in at any given time (“smalltalk,” “pitch,” “show”), what my goals are (“get him to tip,” “get him to private”), what the customer’s goals are (“quick wank,” “sense of intimacy,” “weasel a free show” (boo!)), and what things I can say or do to help me get to my goal. To an autistic person, neurotypicals are playing an endlessly complicated, worldwide game without even knowing it—a game of intrigue, bluff, betrayal, subterfuge, façade, and cunning strategy, like chess, go, poker, and D&D all had a monstrous baby together—and tend to share tips on advanced strategy when what I need are the fundamentals (which neurotypicals have the luxury of never having to think about).

Chaturbate seems too complicated for a flowchart (though I will _love_ anybody who tries!), but I’d love to see a “strategy guide” that might help me with some of the advice I need. (I have looked on the Chaturbate thread’s main post and the Chaturbate page on CamGirlWiki; again, not _exactly_ what I need, but helpful nonetheless!) Other than that I’ll be looking at Chaturbate more (and I’m waiting for them to approve my ID stuff), observing how the game is played... I love being able to watch sexy people masturbate on camera and it’s _research!_

Oh, and, I tried Streamate again yesterday! I stayed on for an hour and again had no luck, though I had a lot of guys logging on and then... immediately logging off. The guy who stayed longest was just there to berate me for having a cheapo webcam. -_- But, fear not! I finally found the high-quality webcam that’s been missing in my house for some time. (Ohhhh that was a relief to find!) I also have a new lighting rig, muahahaaaa. It feels good to be getting these details ironed out!
