Default Applying to some local bars - should I keep strip clubs and dancing off my resume?

Because there's a 2 year gap on my resume. I guess I can always say I am a student, but I am wondering if it would help or hinder me if I said I worked at a club. I am also going to be putting my real name on my resume (or can I not?)... never worked at a bar before and idk how the bar culture works so I can use some help... :| thnx ladies

I would think working in a bar would require similar skills as dancing so it may be helpful to put it on there if you don't need to keep your dancing a secret from anyone currently or in the future and the bar culture you apply to is more laid back.

However if you need to keep dancing a secret then I wouldn't put it on there. I'd just think of some related tasks I've performed that are somehow related to bartending to fluff up the resume. Or you could say you took time off to raise young kids, start a business, study abroad, help a close family member recover from illness, etc

What kind of bars? Like standard type bar? Hole in the wall bar? 5 star restaurant bar?

I doubt a bar would be that concerned with a 2 year gap. But hey never know.

If you can get some connections / network with the bar managers / owners or anyone that can help you get hired beforehand that could help tremendously.

I would do it on case-by-case basis. Use your intuition to see who might be cool with it. Leave it off for now, and if you feel the person interviewing you is down with it, then I'd mention it, otherwise say you were a student.

Bars are concerned with a 2 year gap if it's been 2 years since you last bartended, since the drink recipes tend to leave your head, your pouring and POS system skills in general would be rusty, and depending on how 'trendy' the bar is, you might not know all the 'new, cool' cocktails and shots. If you have NO experience, it doesn't matter. I'm guessing you're hoping someone will let you learn? Or are you trying to barback or wait tables in the bar?

I'd leave it off and I've had bar managers say when girls say they've bartended in strip clubs it just means they've danced there.

I recently started bartending myself and I spoke with the manager at the bar I danced at for 2 years about being a reference for a "waitressing" position. So I would say yes, put it on, but say you were a server. Serving is easy to fake experience. You basically have to be able to carry around a tray and not spill on people, not suck at math (typically waitresses "buy" their drinks from the bartenders at most strip clubs and a lot of regular places too--they never touch the POS, though those are pretty simple to figure out usually as well), and be relatively friendly, as well as having a decent appearance (I'm assuming since you're a dancer you have this one down!). If you still feel nervous about lying, just make friends with one of the servers at your club and ask her about her job. When I started interviewing for bartending positions I got tons of great advice from the bartender at my club because I was friendly with her for the time I worked there. Yay social capital!

Basically, own it. Be yourself. Bartending is actually very similar to dancing, I was surprised. You have to do math in your head, and it's a social job. However: be ready to perform. It's one thing to get a job, most places will try out any cute chick for a couple shifts, but if you suck, you're gone. So you want to take a balanced approach in saying you have maybe 1-2 years serving experience and leave it at that--you can't fake bartending experience, they will know as soon as you do your first shift. Good luck

I would leave dancing off the resume. Unfortunately, many people in vanilla jobs (yes, including hospitality) have polluted views of dancers being dishonest, untrustworthy, lazy, and promiscuously behaved. Wow, that was harsh! I have worked the bar/restaurant industry for decades and also have been dancing for 7. Managers think dancers will be irresponsible and trouble, even the ones who have worked in the industry. Just say you have been a student and been doing internships towards your area of study (which you wouldn't want a bar contacting as a reference) or you were doing odd jobs like painting houses (use a friend as a reference).

Yes, use your real name on your resume/application.

A word of personal advice, don't tell anybody in your new job that you danced. It could very easily blow up in your face. Unfortunately people judge unfairly, and the bar/restaurant industry can be way more caddy than any strip club.
