Default Anybody color their own hair?

I'm tired of getting frustrated by hairstylists that either don't listen or just tell you what you want to hear and then when the color doesn't turn out right they make excuses for it. I'd love to do it myself but think its too risky. Can anyone recommend good at home hair dyes?

I used to colour my hair all the time. I liked Garnier, but you can also go to a beauty supply store and pick up salon-grade dye.

What do you find risky about it btw? Like, I'd often get colour all over the bathroom, but that's about the most "dangerous" thing that ever happened in my years of dyeing my own hair.

hairstylists have always told me that drugstore hair products are made differently and way too harsh on your hair. I guess they have to say that so you keep going to them. Also told me the reason why my color fades so fast is cuz I don't use hair salon shampoos.

OP - What hair color are you? Do you have highlights or Ombre or anything that would make hair dying complicated?

I often dye my own hair. Fuck paying someone $200 just to have them mess it up and chop too much off.

Crossfingers Re: Anybody color their own hair?

Well, here's my deal: I color my own hair, outgrowth only (root touchup). (Although, sometimes w/my arm in pain I get lazy & get that done pro too) I get my dyes @ Sally's, sometimes I ask a ? or two, (they usually have @ least one licensed hair dress on staff). My hair grows very fast, it's only been 3 wks since my last touch up. It's helpful to do a little 'test area', or snip off a piece of hair in an inconspicuous place, tape the ends & dye that piece to see your result. I ignored my own advice there, lol & had to pay to have the areas lightened up again, but my last self touch up yesterday produced great results!
Also, even tho last time I used an ash color, I may change that the next time, (using a gold or neutral tone) or it may get too dark..you have to keep in mind that your hair reaction can change over time, even w/in a couple weeks, at least it's been the case for me.
However, I have highlights, & I go to a salon for that, it's too advanced/time consuming for me. I find that having a consult first, (w/o touching my hair), just talking helps, you can usually get a feel for what they're about. I'm talking a good 20 min convo here, not just a sentence or two. Also, establishing what type of policy they have FIRST, beforehand if you're not satisfied. Of course, nothing's foolproof here. I do consult yelp, allure for reviews to get an idea, but again you have to take everything w/a grain of salt.
    Good luck!

I go to Sally's and do it myself. I had my hair done for years and my hairdresser was insanely expensive. But I have so much grey that it became just too much of an expense to keep it up. Honestly, my hairdresser does a better job. But I love saving the money (and time) when I do it myself.

Right now I have a light brown base with lots of blond streaks. She did an ok job but definitely not worth what I payed. My aunt buys Revlon frost in glow highlight kit for like 10 bucks and does it every 3 months. Im just scared if I color my base and do my own streaks I'll mess it up somehow. I also have lots of greys that i need to cover ( been that way since my early 20's)But $10 would be wonderful to only have to pay.

Nah, you get what you pay for, box color's not strong enough usually, maybe for virgian hair..I use Gray Magic, you add it to any dye. Gray is extremely resistant to dyes, I don't care what it says on the package.
In order to get the lift needed, box color usually will not do it. Maybe your auntie has lighter hair to begin with, or it just works for her. I'd be willing to bet she doesn't have longer hair? Mine's waist length, & not super dark, but the couple times I tried, I came up w/orange streaks b/c there was not enough lift to lighten it the correct amount.
Me personally, the only time I'd use box color, is the Oleoplex stuff, & even then I'd use it my own developer, & of course the gray magic.

Fair warning- I ruined my hair by doing home hair color after having highlighted it a bunch of times. At a point it's not advisable to be doing at-home hair treatments, unless you want to look really bad for a while.

Also the dye load of home hair color is way heavier than salon dye mixes. Works better for darker coloring.

Its hard for me to do my own bc my natural hair color is so dark. And I prefer going really blonde. I wish I coud do my own. It would've saved me a boat load of money.

Do all over highlights/streaks is tricky at home and unless you know what you're doing, difficult to do well on your own. I've used that Frost and Glow kit and it took 2 helpers, and it still came out harsh on me.

All-over color is a lot easier. I color my own hair--stylists never get it right and I end up patinjg a couple hundred for results I hate.

I LOVE Natural Instincts. It's semi-permanent dye so very gentle on the hair. I mix two different colors together to get just the right shade and my hair color is really nice now!

I've been doing my roots myself for the past year or so and I'm so happy in every way. I'm bleach blonde and have perfected it now. My hair has never looked this good and was this healthy.

Hair dressers don't care and leave it on for too long, etc.

I recently discovered olaplex too which is really great for bleaching. Any blonde needs to look it up, it has changed my life lol.

I color my hair myself because I stick to a solid shade of dark brown really close to my natural color. I use Ion color brilliance from Sallys and I really like it. I wont use drugstore/box hairdye though every time I've ever tried it was a disaster. I don't know why the box hairdye sucks so bad because the stuff at Sallys is about the same price and so much better, but it does. It really, really does lol. When ive gotten highlights or gone lighter I've always left it to a professional its too hard to avoid going orange or getting the placement of the highlights completely wrong.

The box hair dye is not strong enough b/c they're afraid of getting sued. The orange is from not strong enough developer to lift the correct amount. & yes, I've found it tends to be darker.

I dye my hair myself. The first time I tried it, it came out terribly--uneven, streaky, just awful. The more I practiced, the better I get. I've now been dying my hair for about 4 years and regularly get complimented on my hair color in and out of the club.

I've been platinum blonde and am currently a vibrant redhead. If I went blonde again, I'd go to an actual hairstylist--I ended up burning the shit out of my hair going blonde and had to rock a pixie cut for a while. Anything besides platinum blonde I do at home.

I use Clairol Ion from Sally Beauty--the kind you need to mix with developer. I wouldn't use any drug store pre-mixed shit, it's just not as good and you can't control how much peroxide you're using. I dye my hair a much lighter color than it is naturally, so I use 40% developer. If you're going the same or darker, I'd use 10-20%. For unnatural, vibrant shades I recommend demi-permanent, for more natural shades go with permanent.

It takes some experimentation to find the right color combo for your hair, but you save SO much money and have complete control over your hair color once you get it right.

I've used many different boxed dyes, bleaches, and coloring. I like garnier for dye, I like Clairol frost and tip for bleaching/ highlights. 2 boxes if you have thick or long hair.

I've been doing my own hair since I was able to buy my own stuff. I prefer it because
    a. its cheaper
    b. screwing it up is my problem, and I don't have to feel like I have over paid someone I have to go back to to fixit
    c. I know exactly what I want, and can tweak it without someone almost getting my vision
    d. take as long as you want, do things around the house or online while you wait

    =)

Now, instead of using boxed pre-mixed dyes, I buy Wella color and 20-30 volume developer. its very easy to youtube it and learn how to do it yourself, and its ALOT cheaper, even than buying boxed dyes. you can usually get more out of your money run for it.

    Salon- $150+
    Boxed preset- $10-30
Dye+Developer- less than $10 each dye

I've even stopped bleaching, because coloring seems to be less damaging than bleach. You choose the color (even light blondes), then choose what volume developer you'll need in order to process it completely. it usually matches, pretty close 99% of the time, you just need to know your hair and tweak it. I'm not promoting wella because there are other great dyes out there, especially the ones that come in fun colors =) that's just the brand I use.

I love Youtube 'university' lol i'm a big do-it-yourself-er, so I find the cheapest/easieast/best way I can to do the things I like myself.

    XOXO

I have a medium blonde base that's dyed from medium brown and I do my own highlights with clairol frost and tip (I think it's called that..the one with the blue and white box) I also have some premature greys and I'm really happy with my colour. I use a brush to pain the blonde dye (boxed dye, not the straight bleach) on roots only.Wash with magic lights purple shampoo, then do the streaks another day to avoid over stripping the hair. The hardest part it getting all the hair through the little holes but it's doable. A three way mirror helps.

I haven't had a problem and it's not obvious I do my own hair. I use the purple shampoo weekly and do a weekly deep condition with the leftover conditioner from the box dye.

Once a month but I can get away with every two months..it's also healthier for your hair that way.

After a while of streaking my hair I find it starts to look all one color so then I ask for lowlights to give it more contrast. Do you ever have to add low lights?

I've been streaking it for 4 months now and I haven't gotten to that point. But when you want to add them, you can use the same product for streaking. Just leave it on less time. Do a strand test ahead of time to check that you have the right colour.

I use tints of nature and it does a great job coloring grays. Been using it forever, like 8 years.

Hair stylists never listen and the color always comes out wrong, so I just like doing mine myself. I'm ravened so that makes it easier.
