What do you say when you go to the dentist, doctor, hairdresser, etc.. when they ask what you do for a living? I don't tell them i dance cuz it's personal and wish I could tell them its none of their business lol. What do you tell them?

it depends on my mood, but I always tell hairdressers so they get the point that I have to look good for work and they better not screw my hair up. Edited to add: otherwise I just tell them I'm a stay at home mom, or I run ebay from home. Sometimes I'll tell them I'm a bartender. But usually "stay at home mom" steers them into talking about my kid and not my job.

I usually say bartender. Too much crap happens when I tell people dancer, they either treat me like a zoo animal and play 20 questions, or they start overcharging/nickel and diming me since they assume we all hemorrhage money and are idiots.

Also go the bartender route. I have bartended so I can hold a convo about the industry. Only my close friends or family know what I do. I find it can be very isolating. Also I used to be more honest about being a dancer but I find females especially really look down on you once they know that....sadly.

I tell them I'm in black market organ trafficking.![]()

Hairdresser yes because in my experience most hair dressers could careless and probably would dance if they could. Dentist what's the point? And Dr i haven't been asked the one visit I've had since being a dancer.

No. I either say that I bartend (typical) or that I do data entry work at home from my laptop. Most of the time I go with the latter because a lot of times when I say I bartend, people will ask me what bar I work at.
I would always say I waitress because I used to, but that always led to more questions. I will probably use data entry from now on or some kind of office work where I can easily change the subject after.

nope nope and nope. Like someone already said...don't feel like playing 20 questions and dealing with the severe reaction either positive or negative. I say bartender because technically I have been bartending for the last 10 years on and off. And if they ask where I say a private club or at my friend's bar that's like 40 mins away in a college town so they wouldn't ever venture that way.
My hairdresser knows because she is awesome and wants to help me make my hair the best for my job. She's always coming up with new ideas for how I could make it look best in the club. I think she's more invested in my hair than I am.
I used to tell everyone but as I just mentioned in another thread, I got broken of that habit really quickly by bad backlash. More people in my life know that I would like, now, but I typically just tell randos that I'm a TA (as that was my old job) or a waitress (I cocktailed before I started dancing), and I'm about to start a part-time gig bartending on Friday, so I've just started telling people that.

^Argh, I hate chatty people who you can't escape from lol! I know it's polite to engage and build rapport, but it makes me uncomfortable and I usually say that I'm a "student", work in "hospitality" or that I'm "in between jobs right now" etc.
Honestly, it's none of their business and even if I were "public" about how I earn a living I still wouldn't disclose my profession for the fear of offending someone or making them uncomfortable lol.

I'm a full-time student so I simply say it's my main job lol
I'm a student too, so I'll say that. Sometimes I say I'm a stripper, but mostly I'll say waitress, because that's my pre-stripping job.
99.99% of the time, when I tell someone I dance / have danced, I end up regretting it. I'm learning to swallow my pride and lie / avoid the truth. Saves me lots of headaches and lots of wondering whether someone did _________ because they know about my job (I can rule that out as a possibility). If someone doesn't absolutely need to know, I don't tell them.
...I'm still working on this though. I have a huge chip on my shoulder about my job (since it's a big part of my adult life), and I feel super resentful that I 'have' to hide it, especially when I see an opportunity to change someone's mind about stereotypes and whatnot. But it's in my own self interest to hide it. I go back and forth on my resolve to keep it a secret.
I say that I'm a student, instead, or that I spend most of my time volunteering, or other half-truths.

One time when I was getting my nails done she asked me what I did. At first I didn't want to tell her but I did in the end and then she said she was a dancer too!! It was too funny

I just say freelance artist, convention worker, or any combo of those & more. I usually change the subject right quick too.
MANY MEN WANTED TO LAY ME DOWN, BUT FEW WANTED TO LIFT ME UP
-Eartha Kitt
The chick who does my hair knows what I do cuz we have mutual friends and have hung out a few times and everybody knows what I do. I've never been asked by a doctor or anybody like that so I don't know what I would do. Im so honest about what I do but I feel like in that situation I might lie and say im in school or something and im not even sure why. People never really ask me what I do for a living I think because im pretty young and just because of they way I look I don't think I look like someone who would actually have a real job lol.

I tell people my morning job, restaraunt hostess, and always add that I dance on the side. I have never felt secretive with this information to anyone EXCEPT my coworkers and managers at the restaraunt.

I say I'm a nanny or babysitter. It can explain all the cash and it's boring enough people don't ask much follow-up questions!

Bartender, student. I name a bar that I used to work at but its really far from where I live now.
One time I brought in a ton of singles to the bank and the teller jokingly asked me what I do (she overstepped w that one) -- I told her my family owns a vending machine company lol
Unsophisticated in the finest sense of the word.

I rarely tell people I dance. I hate the million questions that often precede it, and women that try to peg you down or men who want to sleep with you purely so they can have had sex with a stripper.
I told the doctors a few times to get medical certs so i didn't get fined for missing my shifts and most of them have been ok about it, kinda interested but not judgemental.

Never. It just makes life harder.
Dress to kill the wallet.
My cerologist knows. Lol.
I haven't even told my therapist, thought I'm gonna when I get a new one, because I think that's the only way to properly explain my dissociation and not have it looked at like "oooh, Psych major".
Other than that, there's no reason. I'm a full time student, have another job in an office, and I'm now a teacher at my pole studio. I've got lotsa stuff to talk about.
It's shitty that I get to talk about my pole dancing but not the fact that I dance. I've slipped up a few times at my day job and been like "ooh, it's gonna be nice? Thats it! not going to work". That's not a thing for civies. oops.
