Default Hacked Twice, Arvixe isn't helping at all.

Yesterday I woke up to my wordpress blog site, hosted by Arvixe, my own domain, being hacked. It had a graffiti page and music stuck on it. I called Arvixe who restored the site, advised me to change my password and sent me an email about Wordpress plugins that was two years old. I changed my impossible password to another one, added security plugins to my site, updated my blog.

This morning it was tagged and hacked apparently by the same people. I called Arvixe at 8:30am EST, talked to Zach who told me that adult sites get hacked all the time and I needed to make a gateway page with a capatcha on it and hire a programmer. He also said he would restore my site from yesterday. Well it is after 2pm EST and my site is still hacked, no word from Arvixe, basically I am left out to dry. So, I'm here to share this experience and request suggestions for an adult-friendly hosting site that really is adult friendly.

This is the email I rcvd

"Per our conversation I am requesting that we restore your site xxxxxxxx to Sept 1st as it seems it has been hacked for the 2nd time this week.
We will work on this and get back to your shortly.
    Thanks
    Zach K"

He said it seems to be hacked? That kills me right there. I need hosting that actually is decent please.

Ugh. I used to recommend Arvixe all the time, but they were recently acquired by EIG, who seems to be buying up hosting providers and running them into the ground. For one thing, they're experiencing massive ticket volume following some server migrations that went horribly (check out their support forums in Open Discussions, it's nuts). Also they're overselling their shared hosting plans (see my recent post in my camconcierge thread about how I can't even run my forums on it). They've also started charging $9.99 per year for private registration.

I'm in the process of leaving Arvixe and going with DreamHost. One of my web design clients uses them and I haven't had any issues managing her sites there. They're adult friendly and don't charge extra for private registration. The link in my siggy gives me referral credit if you want to use that, otherwise just go to DreamHost.com

Though, if your site is being targeted by a determined hacker that has something against you in particular, it might be very difficult to keep your site from getting hacked again. I'm sorry you're going through this and I wish I could be more help on the security subject. Good luck!

Thank-you. Now while I am targeted, do you know of a way I can cloak the site, so to speak, so I can still have it for hosting and stuff, without having it live, and while switching hosting? And, what do you, or anyone, think about me telling future host that my site is under attack?

Damn! Now I feel horrible for recommending them. I still use them with no issues for 3 sites I have.

I'm going to remove my sig line recommending them here.

There are a few options. You can install a WordPress plugin that puts up a "coming soon" or "under construction" page. Easy Pie Maintenance Mode https://wordpress.org/plugins/easy-p...ntenance-mode/ and Easy Coming Soon https://wordpress.org/plugins/easy-coming-soon/ are both good. The problem with that, is that still leaves your WordPress site up and open to attack. Another option is to completely take down the WordPress site and put up a simple HTML page in its place, or just empty out the root directory of that domain completely. If you do that, make a backup of your site first. I HIGHLY recommend the duplcator plugin for that https://wordpress.org/plugins/duplicator/

If you plan on keeping your domain name, I recommend that you keep the domain registered with Arvixe, but host it elsewhere. The reason for this is that when you switch registrars, you're required to take it off of private registration temporarily while you move it. This may not be an issue if you don't anticipate people googling your domain whois info, but if you've already been a target, it's probably best to keep your info private at all times. If you had your domain with Arvixe before they started charging for private registration, you won't be charged for it, that only applies to new domains. The DreamHost hosting accounts come with a free domain though, so you can register a new one with them and that may help deter your hacker unless he found you through one of your cam profiles or twitter, in which case it may not.

As far as telling your future host that your site is under attack, I honestly don't know. I've never personally been the victim of hacking, and beyond security plugins for WordPress and having powerful passwords and not using "admin" as a username, I don't know too much about website security. It might be a good idea to let them know before you purchase a hosting account and get a feel for what they can do to help you with that.

Let me know if you need help with anything!

I feel horrible for recommending them too But nobody knew they were going to be acquired by EIG, and even after it happened nobody knew until shit started getting messed up and people looked into it. They said they notified customers of the server merge, but all they did was post a blog post about it. Like anyone reads their blog lol

Please don't feel that way- it wasn't the host's fault I was targeted,

however from what I relayed about my experiences with them about dealing with it, I am basically on my own. I really don't know if that is normal for a host, but when I asked for alternatives to fixing it - getting into the site thru them for instance or cpanel, I was brushed off and basically told to go wait. So I do feel Arvixe could have been a lot more helpful, or at least less dismissive about the whole thing. Esp when it happened a second time, that customer service guy was the worst.

And, the site is still hacked, how many hours later?

UPDATE: I spoke with rep Hollie, who was a lot more helpful. She xpedited my ticket, which led to my inquiry of why a hacked site wasn't already on the hurry up and fix list?, but we will blame that on the previous guy. I'm still changing hosts.

I have a plug in called WordFence. I was getting hundreds of hack attempts daily. WordFence has been great. I have it set to block any user who has ONE failed log-in attempt. You can access a report of IP addresses & permanently block them. It's free, but if you pay for the service you can also block an IP range or specific countries. You'll get a report of countries with frequent log in attempts. If you compare that to your traffic & believe that you don't have many legit customers from there, you can block that country (on the paid version). I don't have the paid version but it hasn't been a problem.

If your username is admin, then you're more-likely to get hacked. Also with Wordfence there's a way to hide your username so that the hackers have to guess at that as well as your password. My username is just as complex as my password. I still get hack attempts now but very few.

You can also view live traffic in real time which is pretty cool. Like right now I can see that someone from [city] Canada is clicking on every photo in my gallery & every page on my site. I can see his IP address & can block it if I choose.

    Thanks Jess,
Yes I'm not username 'Admin', and installed Wordfence after the first hack and it did not quite do the job, I think they (hackers) messed w the script during the first hack. Anyway, I finally got someone helpful at Arvixe, her first name is Hollie and it was so wonderful to have someone actually interested in helping finally on the phone. So try to call after 2pm EST, that is the shift change. My site is still screwed but at least not advertising for the hackers anymore and I can get in and look around at stuff. I'm not saying who they are so as not to give attention, if you want to know send a pm. Still, after all this frustration, I am probably going to let my hosting expire and go w Dreamhost next.
