    Default Saving up

I really need to save up for a new laptop, but I have such the urge to buy a video game right now. It's not much and I know I could easily make it up if I just get my butt on cam another day, but I'm trying to be responsible and sit tight until the laptop is put behind me >.>

What are your best tips for keeping yourself from spending money you don't need to?

Pay yourself first. By that, I mean out of each check, put some money, usually a fixed % or fixed dollar amount into your savings account until you have your goal met.

Computer games are a weakness of mine so I feel ya -- major Sims & WoW junkie over here!

Thing is, the Sims discs cost upwards of $50 when they first come out. WoW expansion packs are also pricey IMO, plus there is the subscription, which isn't bad in itself, but it does add up. But eventually there is always a discount period where the prices get significantly reduced. I always 'commit' to waiting til the item I want hits that discount period, then I will look into it.

Whatever the item is, it's not going anywhere anytime soon, so recognising that counter-acts the scarcity mindset. There is also the need to ask yourself, honestly, 'Will I spend enough time on this to make the cost worth it' as well as 'Will the time I do spend on this, take away from more important things like work, school, family obligations?' The latter is much of the reason I haven't re-activated my WoW account. I always get sucked right back into the timesink.

On a more general note, since I got sidetracked by the video games subj -- the fact that I am no longer making stripper $$$ was enough to make me take a long hard look at how much $$$ I've got, where it's going, & how I should re-direct it toward what's important. This is where living below your means comes into play, except for me it's living 'at means' right now while I get my financials re-built.

In your case, I would say work as much as you can/want/are comfy working … but budget like you're working w/ a minimum-wage amount. This is what I tried to do while dancing. Basically you want to turn-round your thinking to rationalise saving, rather than spending.

Example from last month while I was planning a trip to visit a friend: 'I really want that ice cream shake from down the road w/ my lunch today … but that would be another $7+ that I won't have for my trip in two wks. The ice cream milkshakes will still be there waiting for me after my trip, but I haven't seen this friend in over a yr so I want to make the most of it.' Right now, it's 'X item would be so nice to have right now … but I may need to take 6wks off from work for surgery soon & still have bills to pay while I'm laid up. Plus I have [two other main financial things] that need to be saved-towards.'

It is so easy to rationalise spending by 'Oh, it's a small amt, I can make it back in an hr' but if you think abt it, that's an hr you spent playing catchup so you're really not gaining, at best you're breaking even for an expense that wasn't necessary at all. That's time+effort+$$$ wasted rather than successfully invested in your laptop goal.

This is actually really helpful x.x Thank you everyone <3

I talked myself out of getting it. I mean, I have so many games I could play besides it and there are more important things that need to be taken care of.

I'm super bad at keeping myself from spending money, but I'm telling myself that the money is going toward fun on my vacation in a few weeks so I don't have to be tight fisted when I'm with my friends. The thinking of it like I'm being paid minimum wage helps a lot, actually.

I'm going to work super hard to get things taken care of and then I think I might get it for myself as a "reward" or something? Maybe I'll be lucky and a custie will get it for me >.>

Honestly, open up accounts in a bank out of town, and put the paperwork in a safe. I have literally forgotten about money this way.
