    Default Anyone live in L.A.?

Im starting my life over (toxic ass family and boring cold Wisconsin) and I've always wanted to live in L.A. I've only visited San Fran and Vegas. I cam and do pretty well so paying about $2-3gs in rent wont hurt me. I want to live in a loft/condo and I MUST because im spoiled! I know they're expensive as hell though .

Plus I have 2 children. Is the schooling good? Nice areas?

LA county is comprised of soo many different areas -- you've gotta be more specific about which area you're thinking of moving to. If you have two children but still want to be near to LA, and given your price range, I would probably gear more towards the South Bay
Unsophisticated in the finest sense of the word.

Schools aren't that good in LA except the private schools. If you want good public schools, the North Shore area of Chicago has great schools and the rent price is similar to a medium range area in LA. Chicago also has great clubs, I heard. I am planning on traveling there myself some day.

I would suggest skipping LA taxes and their crappy sidewalks that tend to fuck up your car and move further down to OC. The bathrooms always look better as they seem to take a more luxury style approach with most apartment homes. I have a thing for awesome tile work, kitchen counter tops (granite) also stainless steel appliances. Also either wood flooring throughout or lovely tile flooring in bath/kitchen areas. Long Beach gets it right with the crown moldings and the wood floors but the bathrooms tend to make me want to claw my eyes out. They're usually some pea green number with grout that hasn't been cleaned since 1962. If I ever have to move into one of those places I'm getting a deluxe gym membership so I can use the facilities there. I'm not kidding the bathrooms really make me want to go outside with a hose to wash with a bucket.

Also AC, AC AC. Don't let the leasing agent tell you about the lovely ocean breeze because with the new climate change that ocean breeze doesn't exist. It's far too hot to just keep all windows and patio open + no privacy so who wants to hear everyone's conversation just to go from 97% to 93% temps. So get AC!.

Try not driving on the sidewalk. That might help.

I would suggest San Diego over LA, and definitely over Orange County. OC is super vanilla and boring. SD is basically a smaller, cleaner, safer LA. I don't know about rent prices but I would assume it's less expensive.

Personally, I wouln't want to live there..CA is beautiful, but damn it's been beyond hot this past spring/summer from what I've heard. That's just me, I hate hot weather & of course everywhere has something not likeable.
Isn't the cost of living pretty high there too? Just saying.

I lived in L.A. for over 30 yrs., so yeah, I have a lot to say about it. So much so that I could write a book, but nobody would prob. believe it, because of how crazy it is there.
Anyway, I moved out of the city over 6 mos ago, and very happy I did.
The people in L.A are some of the rudest, meanest, most self-obsessed, cutthroat people in the U.S. MUCH worse than New Yorkers. I'm from the east coast originally.
also, years ago, the mentally insane were dropped off in L.A. when the institutions wouldn't take them anymore(long story but you can look it up)...as a result, these poor people are homeless, living on the streets, and are in your face everywhere You go, and most are very dangerous. Even in upscale areas.
I have also had apt. homes in San Diego, and Palm springs area, so I feel I know a lot about those areas as well.
I'm responding to this thread, because of Your last statement of loving hot/humid weather.^^^^^
L.A. used to be a beautiful, safe, and clean place, with affordable living. I really, really loved living there then. Those days are long gone. I kept waiting for it to go back to the way it was, but sadly it got much worse.
Most of the apt. buildings and homes are very old. Most landlords don't take care of the property because the supply and demand for housing is very high, so there is always someone to rent their place.
San Diego is very clean, and fairly safe, but it too has become overpriced in terms of housing costs. (Add to that everything else, cost of living I mean.)
Palm Springs is by far the cheapest to live. The family communities there are called La Quinta, and Palm Desert. Schools are great also. The temps are toasty for 8 months of the yr..110-125 degrees. and humid.
If you want to P.M. me I will be happy to give you more info.
I've been to all other areas, oc. south bay, north to Santa Barbara, and there are more pros to those areas if you have children.

P.S., The state of California doesn't require landlords to have a/c, only heat. So, if You get a place and they show you that it has a/c, make sure you put in the lease that it is a WORKING a/c.
Believe me, I had to find that out the hard way.

    .
The above paragraph made me laugh. Try living in FL or any Gulf State (NOLA, and Houston TX 2 prime examples), then get back with me about humidity. Palm Springs and points eastward in Mojave Desert are hot and dry. I just checked the Weather Channel website. Palm Springs latest observation had a relative humidity of 29% while some places that I checked in FL had RH's between 69%-92%. For the most part, L.A. summers are milder than many places back east. The average highs in Los Angeles in June-Sept average 78-84 degrees. I can recall many business trips to So Cal in the summer months where walking outdoors felt much milder than the 90 degree dog day summer temps in the Midwest and East Coast.

Periodically, a condition known as the "Santa Ana" which produces strong easterly winds from the desert areas can (and have) yielded triple-digit highs in coastal cities as far north as San Francisco. These characteristic hot and dry winds also cause some wildfires that many of you have read about.

I'll close this meteorology lesson here by suggesting going to www.citydata.com for snippets of information on Los Angeles, and nearby municipalities. It has data on almost anything you'd care to know, and even some stuff you might not care to know. Happy Hunting......
    I'm right 96% of the time. I don't sweat the other 5% .......................

Actually, some parts of Orange county is pretty great including Fullerton and Tustin to live in. Orange County have great schools!! However, I would not live in Los Angeles county because it has became a little run down for my taste. Now, San Francisco is pretty expensive but it has a great nightlife and better schools than Los Angeles.

I've found San Diego to be much nicer than LA too.

Yea it is. BUT HOLY COW IS IT EXPENSIVE......

If it were my choice I'd get out of SoCal all together, but thats just me. But if you have to, look in to OC, Inland Empire, or SD areas

Yeah I've been in Socal for over 7 years and humidity is rare. And out of 7+ years I think I only remember 2 summers being very hot and that was because of freak heatwaves, it usually seems to be pretty mild especially the closer you are to the water. Also even if it's a hot day, as soon as the sun sets it's cold, the heat doesn't linger. I think people assume that it's beach season all-year-round here but it's definitely not, there's even been entire years here where beach season never happened because it stayed constantly overcast and cool by the water all summer. Humidity that I've experienced in Louisiana in the autumn is still way worse than the worst humidity I've experienced here.

Aside from the weather, since you have 2 kids I'm assuming you'll be needing an at least 3 bedroom and that will definitely cost you, if you want it to be fancy I'm thinking closer to 3k than 2k and it wouldn't surprise me if it was more. I just did a search for a 3 bedroom here in San Diego in the suburban neighborhood of Point Loma which is pretty decent yet not posh and I found some 3bedroom 1.5bathroom townhouses for $2515. I found a 3bedroom 3.5bathroom condo in a nicer area for $3600. LA is more expensive.

I also find LA to be unbearable for driving, here in San Diego you can basically take a freeway exit directly into any area you want to be in, in LA it's not like that and you actually have to drive through multiple neighborhoods and sit in light after light after light...... and the roads tend to be very congested so the lights are all extremely backed up and I think the freeways are a nightmare.

I don't mean to diss LA or anything because I don't hate the city, I think there's tons of cool stuff there and I don't mind the people, but for logistical reasons I could never live there.

I'm just going to throw it out there that in nearly a decade, my experience was the exact opposite. The people in LA ate so laid back and polite compared to everywhere else I've lived. I can't stand anywhere else anymore because everyone in other major cities seems so high stress, cutthroat, eager to use each other, shitty, and rude in comparison.
Maybe it depends what part of the city you live in.,

I've lived in SoCal all my life, and I grew up in LA county, I won't even drive there to visit my family because the traffic is the worse!! And I live in OC which is only 1hr away! There is always traffic or car accidents no matter what time it is! So be prepare to be late when traveling! Way too many people, lots of transplants, so your experience will be different anywhere you go. I've been living in OC for 10 years and I love it! But I live close to the beach so it's never hot or humid, it does get crowded a little bit in the summer because it's an international touristy beach location, but the schools are great if you have kids! Definitely cleaner and safer then anywhere in LA! San Diego is awesome too, if I make another move that will be the next county I live in! Hopefully this info helps!
