Dizzy Leasing office giving me the run around

    Hi Everyone

I made an appointment to view an apartment last Friday. I called the leasing office the day I made the appointment and they told me it was an ideal time to come by and fill out an application because the application fees would be waived for that week. Excellent. I view the apartment and it's just as pretty as the pictures so I decided to fill out the application. Mid way through filling out the application the leasing lady tells me she needs a $200 check or money order for them to review my application and hold the apartment I wanted. I thought I heard her say that to the people before me but I thought they might have had really messed up credit or something. The $200 is refundable if I don't get the apartment but I was kind of irked they conveniently told me about the $200 once I was at the office. I want the apartment so I said okay and went straight to nearest post office and got her a money order for $200. The leasing lady tells me she will e-mail or call to let me know the decision by Monday.....

Monday came and I still hadn't heard anything from her and it was past 4:30. I called her and she tells me doesn't know yet but will call me tomorrow with an answer. Okay. Not a problem. Yesterday rolls around it was past noon and I still hadn't heard from the leasing office. I call to ask if I didn't get approved or there was a problem. She says I meet the required income and credit. Everything looks very promising she tells me. She just needs to call my land lord for a reference. Okay. I have a good history with my land lord and he is easy to reach. I also tell her I want to know if I was approved ASAP because I wanted to come down Friday to tie up the paper work, pay the rent and any misc. fees so everything would be paid up early. She tells me that is great and she will get back to me sometime tomorrow. Okay.......

It's now almost 4 and I still haven't heard anything back. I'm perplexed to why this woman just wouldn't tell me the application process is taking longer than expected or at least some kind of professional excuse. If she didn't want me as a tenant wouldn't it just be easier for her to tell me I wasn't approved??? I've been approved for apartments that were astronomical in price compared to this one. I've never dealt with a leasing office that displayed this kind of cockamamie and unprofessional behavior

The only reason I'm tolerating this is because the apartment is really ideal for my life and needs. If that wasn't the case I would tell this woman to take a flying leap and go pick up my money. I've been looking at other places that could be suitable but this apartment like I said is most ideal.

Have any of you ever had experiences like this or have any idea why this woman is dodging me instead of giving me a straight answer? Thanks for letting me vent.

I honestly don't think she's doing this 'personally' to you... I had one apt that it took over a week for them to get us to the signing stage. I had to call them every day and it was always something different; "we're verifying your roommate's employment", "we're waiting on his rental history" etc etc. They had never even called my club at the time to verify my info. I think they were calling each place once and forgetting to call again if they didn't respond.

The holding fee sucks ass but I've heard of complexes doing it.

I will say though that I would run far away if treated like this, because it bodes what the office will be like if you need something while you're there.

^^^^^This. I didn't listen to my gut when something similar happened with my current landlord, and it's been hell living here for the last 8 months. Everyday, it's a new irritation and bait and switch with amenities, things not getting fixed, etc.

I guess I will give her until Friday morning. Beyond the place being aesthetically the way I want with upgrades it's also all on one floor and in a good area for my mother. She is chronically ill and depends on me a lot. I feel like she might not need me as much in that apartment as she does here. IDK, I guess there is no use in being stressed out about it. I don't particularly love the place I live currently but it is safe and I've never had a problem with neighbors. So..... I shall see what happens. Thank you all for the input.

I want to wish you the best of luck.
Moving in itself is nerve wracking. Then add the pressure of dealing with apt. Offices..Its a lot.
Every time Ive moved in the past, Ive said it was the last time.
Argh!! Why cant it EVER be?
Im yet again having to move, so know what You are going through.

Finally got everything squared away with the apartment. Now I just have to hire movers. I'm a tad concerned because I essentially live in a house and can make all the noise I want. Nothing fazes my neighbors, a bomb could go off and they would just shrug. lol I'm not use to living so close to people and I hope the apartments walls are really thick.
