I know y'all have been hearing awful things about Arvixe around here lately but I just wanted to warn you of something I just discovered and also clarify exactly what's going on over there.
I have a few Arvixe accounts, for different things. I cancelled the one that has all my adult stuff on it and most of my work projects and moved those to DreamHost. Well there's another account that I only have 2 sites on that don't get much use or traffic so it wasn't really high priority to move them. And they were due to auto-renew November 10 so I was going to move those later this month and close the account before it renewed. Bad idea. The account auto-renewed a month early! At 1am this morning I get two emails from Arvixe, one saying my account was renewed and the other saying they took the payment. So I'm out $60 unless I can get them to refund me (which from what I've heard is incredibly unlikely).
So if you have an account and were waiting until it expires to move, you might want to do that over a month ahead of time and make sure to turn off auto-renew just to be safe.
Now on to why you should move your sites away from Arvixe and WTF is going on over there:
To put it simply, Arvixe was acquired by EIG which led to their shared hosting getting oversold, their servers getting overloaded, and their customer support basically going away. A former employee explained in detail what happened over on webhostingtalk and it's pretty damn awful: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showth...94#post9547194
Their support forums had become full of angry customers and people warning other people to stay away from Arvixe, and a few days ago, Arvixe got rid of the support forums completely. Check out the #arvixe hashtag on twitter... it's quite interesting.
In case you didn't want to read the thread I linked, basically the only way to get any sort of customer support is to put in a ticket and tweet them with your ticket number for a more timely response. I've had a ticket open with them for a few weeks now. It's just awful.
So yeah, Arvixe is dead, long live DreamHost!
P.S. If you're moving to dreamhost and want a $50 off coupon, enter the code LEXBON50 at checkout. Full disclosure: I get a referral bonus for that, but you also get $50 off so it's a win-win![]()
