Default Advice for expat camming situation,

    Hi ladies

I am not sure if this topic has been discussed before so I will ask it here. I had an account with SM for several years while I lived in the States. (I am an american citizen.) However, I recently moved to a different country a few months ago. During this time my Sm account was inactive and it must have been suspended for this reason, because when I try to log on, my username doesn't exist anymore. I know that you can email them and get them to reactivate the account. However I was worried about a few things. The first being that my placement would be really awful since I was away for so long. I thought of making a new account, but I am waiting to get my identity card in the country I now live in. Would I be able to use a U.S. passport or do I need a mailing address? I am worried about the 1099 tax form, I plan on paying U.S. taxes, but I no longer have a U.S. address technically. The address on my driver's licence is my X's house and I can't get anything mailed there because I would not receive them. (we are not on speaking terms) I could try to just get my existing SM account reinstated, and then try to update my address to my current one when I get my identity card. But the country I live in is very slow when it comes to bureaucratic things and I have heard that it can take up to 3 months to get the identity card! I am hoping I will have this before December but there is really no way to know this and there is nothing I can do to expedite the process. I would like to sign up for new cam sites, but I guess I should wait until I get my new ID to do that or should I try to just us my passport? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I have been thinking about this for days and was reluctant to even post but I decided that maybe one of you has better insight than me. Thank you in advance.

Most expats that want to stay "on the grid" can retain a lawyer on the cheap just to have a mailing address. You can also incorporate yourself and have the lawyer handle any official mail to your company (which includes any relevant 1099's to camming). The fees for this can run from $30 - $100/month. This can also include depositing checks if you can make personal arrangements with them (you give them "power of attorney" on your U.S. business bank account, possibly company "officer" status - and you can specify with the bank they have "deposit only" powers). We looked into this pretty heavily when trying to figure out if we could run our business from anywhere in the world. For an individual cammodel it wouldn't be much different.

As for placement after being gone so long, it will probably be pretty bad coming back...for a few days. Mentally prepare yourself for that with the mindset that you will power through it with a smile and you'll get everything back fast. Also, pray your current area has good internet. You won't need to worry about your ID with SM until the one you used previously is about to naturally expire.

Thank you for the advice. I knew one of the pitfalls with having the account reinstated is that it will probably be very bad for a while, that's why I was just wondering if it would be better to create a new account once I have my new ID in my new country. I will look into incorporating myself but I am not sure how easy that would be to do from abroad. I didn't plan any of this before I left the states because I didn't think I would be camming but life surprises us sometimes! lol

If you're abroad you have a major advantage in that you can "shop around" state to state for the best deal in incorporating yourself (state tax rates, registration fees, and annual paperwork requirements all vary). If you have roots and are settled in the U.S., its easier most of the time to stick with the state you live in.

Just to let you know as a fellow american expat (but I work behind the scenes and not in front of the camera ;-) you don't pay US taxes if you make foreign earned income. IE you pay taxes to the country where you have residence, BUT you do still have to file US taxes yearly. The 2555 form gives you an exemption that's well over $95k now.

Before you incorporate yourself in the states make sure to check with a tax expert that knows US taxes and the taxes of the country you live in because certain company structures can be beneficial while others will be an extreme pita or will cost you in one location or the other (especially if the revenue is considered world wide).

Also, another heads up, when you open foreign bank account(s), all accounts that add up to $10k total (including pensions you can't draw on until 65+) have to be reported to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (not the IRS) or you can face stiff fines. Unless you make a ton of money every year, or transferred over 10k to your foreign account, you should be safe as anything under 10k doesn't have to be reported. Oh, and even having signing authority over a foreign account in the course of your job makes it so you have to report the bank account and amount in the account even if it's not yours. o_O
