    Default Resume gap after college

I danced my way through university and finished my bachelor's degree this summer! Yay! But now the hard stuff begins... See, now that I'm free to get a "real job," I really just don't want to. I'm currently very happy with the work/life balance and income afforded by dancing. My motivation to work twice as many hours for half the money is zero. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Plus, there's not anything else I'd rather be doing right now besides dancing. I served in the military and worked civilian jobs before I started dancing, and stripping has by far given me the most satisfaction (and money!) of any job I've held. The main reason I went to school was that I felt I needed a back-up plan in case something happened that prevented me from earning a living in the sex industry. I think I would be totally content to be a milfy mega-hustler when I'm like, 45. I don't really want to stop dancing unless I have to, you know?

But, in the meantime, I'm worried I'm fucking myself over by not jumping into the world of straight jobs right away. My boyfriend oversees hiring/recruiting at his company and he told me that he would be very unlikely to hire someone who was more than a year out of college without relevant work experience or internships. Obviously, school was very expensive and I don't want to make my investment essentially worthless if a degree means nothing when it's a few years old.

So... Has anyone had any similar experiences? Is it really necessary to get a resume-padding job immediately after graduation? Should I just work on creating a cover story for the time I'll have spent dancing?

Well why can't you do both? Do the part time vanilla and part time dancing.

^ I do actually want to find a volunteer position for weekday afternoons, but I'm worried that's not "good enough." The issue is that I don't want to do anything too involving -- when I was dancing and going to school, I was so exhausted from it all that I spent my time off in bed. I would really prefer to avoid feeling like that again.

Do you mind if I ask what type of degree you have?

Eagle brings up a good question and that is your type of degree. Honestly some degreed career paths are not that lucrative and your better off hustling then using the degree as backup. If you have a degree where you could make more than dancing, then maybe land an internship (paid intern even better) to keep the momentum going towards using your degree until you know exactly what you want to do.

My degree is in Global Studies with a focus on the Middle East. I picked that because it builds nicely on what I did while I was in the Army. My friends with the same major are working in pretty diverse fields, for example, one is working locally with the DNC and another moved to DC for an international publishing internship. But basically, it's applicable to any job that deals with politics or international matters.

Vouched. Unless you come up with a good reason like family emergency, independent project, or whatever, with relevant detail (for non personal issues) that you can speak to.

Years ago a resume was an exhaustive list of everything the job applicant had ever done, because usually it was written once and duplicated for every job opening. The idea was to have something relevant to whatever job opening might occur.

Now, with computers, resumes are easily re written and are specific the experience relevant to a specific job, and are not a day-to-day history of the applicants entire life. The applicant has done many things irrelevant to this job, and they are not included in the resume as they are irrelevant.

In this economy, it's not unusual for recent graduates to not have a job in their field for a year or even longer. It certainly makes it harder to actually break in to their industries, but it's not necessarily an automatic no from every company.

Now, this also means that many graduates don't land jobs in their fields right away, or even in a while, so don't underestimate how long it'll take you to find a job that uses your degree. Unless you have great connections, it's not like you can decide in a year or two when you're sick of dancing that you want your career and can find a job by the end of the week.

Personally, I would start job hunting -- you're in a very fortunate position in that you have income coming in so don't have to settle for the first job that comes along -- while volunteering, working part-time, or doing something at least tangentially related to your degree. The beauty of dancing is that you don't have to dance full-time to make enough to live comfortably, so use that spare time to give yourself a good start on the career your poured a lot of money into.

You may not have the motivation now to quit dancing, but unless you want to do it for many more years, maybe not having to be "stuck" dancing because you couldn't break in to your field down the line will serve as motivation.

And, I mean, yeah, you may have to make a decision soon about hanging up the heels (or at least only dancing on weekends or sporadically) versus working in your field, but, sometimes being an adult means doing things you may not be crazy about because they're the responsible choice for your future.

FWIW I danced while in school and dabbled with the idea of dancing after graduation, but my motivation to only dance decreased significantly after a couple of months, so maybe you'll find the same. I'm not built for full-time dancing. I feel better mentally and make more money when I have school/work/something else going on, so a few months after I graduated, I took on a full-time internship in my field and only danced on weekends. When that turned in to a real job, I negotiated a half day off a week so I could dance twice a week. Now, I'm looking for a 5-day a week vanilla job because I'm ready to hang up the heels. I've been looking for a few months now, so even though I'm employed and have a strong resume, it's still not that quick or easy to get a job.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Are you very interested in work related to the Middle East? One way you could probably greatly increase your value would be to learn Arabic. You could continue dancing while you learn Arabic, and when you're ready to look for a job in a few years, you could tell employers that you delayed working because you wanted to become fluent in Arabic. There is a very big demand for people who are able to understand Arabic. Just a thought.
