Default Best box dyes, colors, highlights for dark brown hair?

Hey beautiful ladies! I'm in a bit of a rut with my hair- I stopped dying it or really fucking with it at all for the past 3 years, just getting average sensible haircuts etc, in order to grow out my natural hair color and texture, which is a pretty lovely raven color (I know, I'm so modest) if I do say so myself. But it's just... boring you know? Plain jane. I need a little something funky.

Sooo I really want to put in some deep red highlights, maybe dye it a few shades darker, and give it a nice, funky, modern cut. But I'm in the middle of paying down debt and living in austerity for the next 2 months, so I preferably want to not go to a salon to get it done, if I can avoid it.

I haven't used box dye since early high school, and I remember it looking pretty cheap. That said, if you ladies have a box/bottle DIY for what I'm looking for, I'm all ears.

And, just for reference, my hair is pretty much the same color as Katherine Zeta Jones or Kim Kardashian, but less... you know, amazing. Haha

Hi, there. Honestly I don't recommend box color. I do go to a pro, but I sometimes do my own touchups, have done this for years the base color only I go to Sally's beauty store, I use the Age Beautiful line (Im older) Also. Wella brand is good there. They have a pro hair person there that can advise you. Especially if you're considering highlights, that's a tricky process
Also Id suggest a [email protected] a salon,or two to get an idea, maybe you could also get a better deal than you thought.

Thanks for the reply! I was doing some research and the hair school in my area does cut+highlights for $60, which is only $20 more than I was planning to spend anyways, and from what I've been reading, I'm probably better off going there than making an attempt myself.
