Default What is your self-tanning routine and how do your self-tanner to last the longest?

I can not get my self-tanner to last longer than 5 days before it starts getting too patchy and I have to scrub it off and start all over again, and that goes for every brand of self-tanner I have tried. It takes me at least 3 nights of applying self-tanner in a row to get tan since I am so fair and then since it only lasts 5 days from start to finish, that only gives me 2 days that I can have a tan before I have to scrub and repeat. So annoying and so exhausting.

I do everything I should to make it last longer. I moisturize daily, I drink a lot of water, I don't take long showers, but I still can't get my fake tan to last.

What is your self-tanning routine like? How often do you exfoliate and start the whole process over again and is there a self-tanner that you have found that lasts at least a week?

I have heard about that Phenomenal 2-3 week tan from Sephora but there is no way I am paying $54 for a self-tanner lol. And I am not sure why they are even making that claim. Skin cells are always shedding so it is pretty unlikely that a fake tan is going to last more than a week tops.

Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Keep rubbing it in until it dries. Preferably thin layers.

I use to apply, then air dry. Which leaves streaks.

i wash with cerave bar soap/body wash..its super hydrating. what kills my self tan is my skin getting dry and sloughing off and then it gets all patchy. i also moisturize with coconut oil on the days i dont apply it. when i do apply it, i exfoliate with a washcloth first REALLY well. then i dry it gently with a blow dryer til its almost dry.
but i honestly dont see it lasting a lot longer than 5 days anyways, in fact if you only applied it once 5 days is REALLY good

I mean, don't knock it till you try it? I regularly pay $45 for St. Tropez self tanner which lasts a week. You get what you pay for. $54 dollars isn't bad for a tan that claims to last 3 weeks. I would be more worried about whether or not the color looks natural on you. I also tan in a tanning bed, which lasts as long as you maintain it, and it's much cheaper than self tanning, and not bad for you if you do can tan and do it right without burning.

St. Tropez is what I use as well. I'm super fair, too, so I apply two coats to my face and three to my body to achieve the color I want. Then I reapply every 2-3 days. If you keep up with it, you won't get much of the patchiness because by the time one coat starts to rub off, you're applying another coat. I only notice the patchiness if I go too long without reapplying. I don't even take care of it all that well... I don't moisturize or exfoliate much, and it does me just fine. $45 for a large bottle isn't much to ask for a self-tan that goes on without streaks and looks natural... and without the damage of a real tan. In my own personal opinion, of course.

I use extra dark St. Tropez. It's the best mousse I've used. It is expensive, but I usually go through 4-5 bottles a year, so for me the annual cost is comparable to the annual cost of getting my hair cut. I really, really enjoy the way I look with a tan, which makes it totally worth it to me!

I tan at least once a week, usually twice. I exfoliate and moisturize daily because I find that makes my tan fade evenly instead of peeling off in noticeable patches. Plus that definitely prevents my tan from rubbing off on my white work clothes. For areas that are crease-prone (on me it's the front of my ankles) I supplement with a tanning lotion -- I like L'Oreal Sublime Bronze. For some reason, tanning lotion seems to stick better than mousse, although mousse can get you the darkest.

Sadly, I think that frequent maintenance is just in the nature of a fake tan. Like you said, your skin cells turn over too quickly for it to last longer than a week.

I am too scared to use tanning beds, to be honest. Tanned for a year when I was 16 and forever paranoid because of it. I do agree that some high-end self-tanners can be superior though.

I'm pale AF. Typically I rock the goth look but in the summer I use a spray tan machine, maximist. Never found a self tanner I like. The spray goes on so evenly and there's no streakiness that you get from rubbing the lotion on your skin. It comes with a little tent that I setup and use so there isn't a huge mess to clean up. There is a brand I get online it is like $100 + for me to get it in Canada but I love it. Tampa bay tanning. I exfoliate before and then just spray it on use a mirror to get my back, put my hair up in a bun with a shower cap so it doesn't get sprayed and a heater or fan pointed at me while I do it. Its pretty dark and it does get patchy after awhile I think that's just the nature of the product. I just deal with it since it's worth it and I love the smell makes me think of summer. Tanning around here starts at $50 a month for unlimited and this machine had already paid for itself the 1st summer I had it. If you are really into tanning I would consider it. Lasts longer than self tanner

St. Tropez and Xen Tan both have a nice color but as for how long it lasts yeah I don't really think there's much that can be done about that. Skin cells come off after a certain point and the tan goes with 'em there's really no tanning formula that can change that. I just don't like applying my own self tanner so I get an airbrush tan. It's expensive but it looks so pretty and I love tan skin so it's totally worth it for me! I also use tanning beds sometimes because I tan easily and I don't burn and I think it's a good base for a fake tan. It adds depth to the color.

always exfoliate your body before using self tanner. I use arbonne cream ,works amazing and brings out the natural colour of your skin

Self-tanning is so much trouble I decided to embrace my fair skin, saves so much time and money. No more embarrassing moment when I look orange or streaky.

There's always Jergens BB cream for the body, in a gold tube. It doesn't have/give much color, but uses filters, etc like BB cream/foundation for the face. You don't have to go that scrub route either.
