IME - "luxury" apts are almost never as luxurious as they seem at first glance. The nice finishes are often stupid things like hard-to-clean stainless appliances or bath tubs that are too large for you to fill with sufficiently hot water. On-site amenities like tanning and saunas and gyms are nice... but they're basically never sufficient in quantity or size for the entire building so you almost never actually get to use them.
A nice, clean newer building filled with quality, high end furniture isn't really a step down, and you can do that and pay for gym, tanning, spa services with the money you're saving by living in a more reasonably priced apt in a convenient area.
Again. It's just my experience... I'm sure there are places with truly luxury apts that I've just never found.
