Default Motivating yourself to go to work

For those of you who don't work on a schedule, how do you force yourself to work regularly? I'm really struggling with this right now! I can't seem to make myself work consistently and I don't know what to do.

I used to work in a strictly scheduled club and had zero issues working 3-4 shifts per week. Then I worked in an unscheduled club, but had to work regularly on the weekend because I was in school during the week. Now I'm out of school, with unlimited time to spend in the club ... and I'm struggling to drag my ass to work more than one shift a week. It's not that I'm burnt out, because I'm much happier when I'm at work, and skipping work actually makes me feel anxious and grumpy. Nonetheless, I usually opt to spend prime shifts at home with my boyfriend instead of making $$$.

Money-wise, I'm able to pay all my bills working 6 or so shifts a month, but the reason I want to work more is simply greed for that awesome stripper money I know I could be making. So, should I make a spreadsheet with my savings goals or something? Get a whiteboard or a big calendar to mark off shifts I want to be working? Is there like a motivational book or something I can read?!

It's literally so bad that I'm thinking of asking my favorite bouncer to fine me if I don't show up to work at least two days a week.

I'm like in the exact same situation as you almost lol. I havent really set up a schedule for myself yet that I've stuck with. All I can say is I generally know which days I'm going to work at the beginning of the week (Friday & Saturday and then one or two weeknights). When that day comes I kind of spend my day a little differently than I would if I had the day off. I eat a little better those days (like no bread or really heavy foods), I make sure I go to the gym, I wash my hair earlier in the day and put self tanner on. Then when it's closer to being when my shift is I think to myself, I did all of that today and I'm not about to waste it sitting at home all night (especially after washing my hair and putting all that self tanner on bc I'm lazy lol).

So that's just what I try to do right now but I definitely need to read some other responses from some more organized ladies. My goal is to make a set schedule for myself that I stick to every week though.

^ I'm so glad I'm not the only one! Thank you!

I've been brainstorming/Googling productivity tips since my OP and I thought of two things I'm going to try to see if they improve my consistency. The first idea I read about was to hold yourself accountable to your goals by giving a friend $100. They can keep it if you don't accomplish whatever goal you set, but they give it back if you do. I think I'm going to give my boyfriend $150 every Monday and if I haven't worked three shifts by the following Monday, then he can keep it. There's no flipping way I'm paying my boyfriend six hundred bucks a month, so I have high hopes for holding myself accountable that way!

The other idea I came up with was to make a money goal coloring book. (Confession: I'm a dork and I love coloring books) I think if I have a tangible way to track and reward myself for my progress towards fixed goals, it will motivate me more than just whining "Waaahhh I wish I worked more" is currently doing.

But I'd still love to hear all the tips and tricks from the awesome motivated ladies here!

At the beginning of each month I set weekly goals for money and shifts to work. For example, next week I might have a goal of $2,000 and a goal of 3 shifts. If I make that goal in 2 shifts I can reward myself by taking the rest of the week off, but most of the time I feel good so I work another night just to get more money. For me it just makes me feel good when I meet a goal. I feel bad when I skip a shift I've set for myself even though I have absolutely no set schedule.

I also just look at my bills lol. I remind myself of all the things I need to have paid by the end of the month, the things I want to do, and how good it feels to add money to my savings account.

I write down the things that I want and need and set weekly goals and reward myself for achieving those goals. I look at those goals every single day. If I lose track of my goals, I don't go in to work, and it's a downward spiral. Keep your goals in the forefront of your mind. Plan off days too, use them as rewards for achieving goals. Goals and goal setting is very, very important.

Somebody once suggested taping a picture in your locker of something fun you want to buy. You could do that at home on your mirror.

I like the whole rewarding yourself for meeting your goals for that week idea. What are some ways we can reward ourselves? I tried thinking of things that are generally free or not expensive since I'm trying to save money right now. Maybe like a pampering day at home or something at the end of the week?

It's interesting...psychologically, it feels healthier for me to avoid rewarding myself for going in to work. It's much healthier for my mind if I go through the whole "this is a job, and I need to treat it like a job" internal monologue. Like, I'm not going to treat myself just for going in to my job.

Once I've actually worked my shift, then I allow myself to buy a couple of non-essential things per week. But I don't set the expectation that' I get a reward just for going in to work.

    Does that make any sense?

^ Yeah, when people talk about 'rewarding themselves' I'm like... so how much does it cost to reward yourself? Does it now negate that you even went in? It would make me feel worse to be blowing money on 'motivation' to go in. It's a job.

I try to make it a small thing. I'm lazy as fuck and would eat out every meal if I could, so I tie my eating out to working... For a long shift, I get Chipotle, a short shift I get a fancy latte.
Once in a while if I've been a Scrooge, I will let an entire shift's profit go into my spending money, and I use that for fun stuff.

Yeah that's true we shouldn't have to reward ourselves for just going to our jobs. But I think it might be a good idea to have some type of relaxing treat yourself day at the end of the week like on Sunday after you've worked hard that week. Like take a long bath, watch movies, order pizza, give yourself a facial or whatever else. But I kind of do that a lot already lol so maybe I'll just reserve Sundays for that as a little reward...a FREE reward lol minus the pizza.

Totally! I was speaking purely for myself.

OMGGGG! I am absolutely hating myself for not getting to work tonight when I had shit else to do tonight and look hot and totally could have. You took the words out of my mouth. I don't understand what my deal is. I love stripping! It's so much fun, I love dancing, getting naked, meeting people, flirting, getting money etc etc. I'm not burnt out, but I just CAN'T get to work on time if at all which frustrates me so much. I have another part-time job where I work 15 hours a week and I never have any trouble getting there on time. But stripping, where I have no schedule - I feel like such a dunce, why is this such a problem for me? I've been diagnosed with ADHD, maybe I just need to get back on some medication - but medication isn't everything. I feel like I need some other kind of support or pressure or a pimp or SOMETHING to make me work! JESUS CHRIST! :-P

p.s. I even have some goals I'm working towards, like a trip to work in Canada and then in Australia - I'm trying to make an extra 8,000 in 5 months which shouldn't be too much trouble as long as I focus, but that's the problem I'm dealing with.

This is precisely how I feel on no-motivation nights. I feel like I could've written your whole post! I've been diagnosed with ADD too and I'm currently unmedicated for it. When I was taking Adderall I had a much easier time working consistently. I wonder if that's part of it?

Update: I met my schedule goal this week! I also met my money goal, which is excellent. I changed up my original plan a little bit and just promised my boyfriend that I would pay him $50 for every missed shift instead of doing the complicated $150 lend-and-give-back thing. I think that as a sex worker, there's something deeply repulsive about giving money to a man, so that little $50 was an extremely powerful motivator.

My schedule goal coloring book is fun to work on and while it's not exactly motivating per se, drawing it has been a good way to reinforce the positive feelings that I get from work -- earning money, being cute, the satisfaction of setting a goal and meeting it, etc. It's also helping me realize how much I enjoy being at work, regardless of if it's a $300 night or an $800 night. Which is good! Because in the end it's all just money that keeps adding up in my bank account.

I need to get back to feeling like that about work cause I know that's definitely how I used to feel too. I think that's been my problem lately I've been thinking all these negative things about stripping and I think I'm just being dramatic lol. Thanks for that post Vivian!
