Hi everyone
I would like to know which charities or foundations are close to your heart or you think deserve more recognition
I don't have a lot of disposable income so I've been bypassing large charities and going directly to smaller local places.
Our animal shelters and local women's shelter have thrift shops that I donate goods to and the profits go to those shelters (like Goodwill, but without a CEO making a stupid salary from my goods). The shelters will also fill out the donation slips for writing them off on taxes.
My local grocery store has $10 giftcards that can be purchased and are donated to local food pantries. Sometimes they have pre-made donation bags made up that cost $5 or $10. I try to buy one whenever I remember.
Also, my daughter is in school, so they do a different kind of collection drive each month that I try to donate as many listed items to. Food last month, troop supply boxes this month, coats/gloves/hats, etc.
On a large scale, Ronald McDonald Charities are near and dear to me. I have personally seen the impact and help provided by them when my little cousin needed her liver transplant. And again when my friends had their baby. They really do a lot to make sure families can be together as much as possible for the duration of a child's hospitalization (almost 2 years in my cousin's case).

For larger charities, Catholic Charities. They are one of the largest charities in the country and the vast bulk of everything donated to them goes directly to people in need. They do so much in so many places that it is impossible to describe it all. They operate food pantries, soup kitchens, mobile meal trucks, shelters, adoption services, other family assistance, school tuition assistance (through Catholic schools located in bad urban areas), immigrant services, other housing assistance, and a lot of other programs. They spend $4 billion a year in direct support for all of these efforts, many of which are provided in some of the most blighted cities in the country (especially in the north and northeast).
For smaller charities, we donate to local food and shelter assistance programs, both directly and through a variety of local drives (school and community). My wife is part of a couple of different community groups and is often involved in some of the local drives to which we donate.

I love Hope for Paws, they have a lot of dramatic rescue videos floating around on facebook. I set them as my Amazon Smile charity.

It's important to do a little due diligence to make sure the money actually goes to the cause. Most of my charity work is outside of the US but the ones here that I like here are: Scholarship America and Catholic Relief Services. If anyone is interested in non-US NGOs, just say. The best charity is the one you do yourself though. Sponsoring a family with gifts for Christmas, volunteering at a food bank, etc. You get much more out than you put in.
I do a lot of online shopping so I set up Amazon Smile.
I also give to colleges so more students can have better opportunities for higher education.
And the kid gives food at school for a food bank.

Also, at the Elizabeth, NJ local shelter. https://m.facebook.com/elizabethshelter
That is probably the most depressing place I've ever been to in my life and that's without seeing the animals. The entrance and location depressed the hell out of me.
When we went to drop off pet food, the guy working there had no choice but to put them on top of this fridge where the dead frozen animals are. The place lacks space and it's so dirty looking. It was just heart breaking.
I donate mostly to animal shelters/rescues. Over millions of defenseless animals get euthanized each year, bc of lack of shelter room, support, and funds. Over breeding has to stop.

We donate mostly to water charities (clean water, water purification efforts, etc) and to animal charities (shelters, SPCA, veterinary scholarship, "wags 4 warriors," etc). I've also given to the Cleveland Orchestra or their young musicians programs.
We aren't well-off either. We tend to pick two charities a year and donate $75 to one and $50 to the other one. We've been doing that for the last 10 years or so. It's small potatoes but it is something.

Thanks for sharing, Dominic2.

This's a GREAT THREAD..
Please, check out http://www.thepetitionsite.com/
There are animal welfare, environment/wildlife, human rights, education petitions, some ask for a donation, most do not. They ask for electronic 'signatures' (some allow your name to be hidden if wanted). There are some great causes! Front & center right now on there, is one to prosecute the Planned Parenthood shooter as a domestic terrorist..
I just 'signed' one to help free an elephant chained for many yrs..
You can also start your own petition too!
Sorry for the slight t/j but it really is a great site.
Anyway, I support http://www.reddooranimalshelter.org thru Amazon smile, & my own donations.
I also support (when I can) ASPCA, World Animal Protection, Defenders of Wildlife. Earthjustice, etc.
I give cash donations when I do go to church, which isn't all the time. I give stuff to Goodwill, Epilepsy Foundation, local food pantry.

Yes. Can this please be a sticky thread?![]()

My local grocery store during the holidays has the opportunity to donate $5-$50 toward the local food bank. NAMI is close to me. I've donated to charities for Sickle Cell and veterans.

LINK (Liberty In North Korea) - http://www.libertyinnorthkorea.org/
North Korea is the most oppressed, controlled, and miserable country on Earth. It is a modern day holocaust over there. People are thrown into gulags (forced labour/ concentration camps) for the purpose of slave labour. Most of the country is starving to death, and the government runs a "cult of personality" system. The level of brainwashing there is unbelievable. The people there need liberation now!![]()

I second what Rick said about Catholic charities and local food and shelter assistance programs. Even if you aren't religious, Catholic charities help a lot of local people in the area, who are in need.
Also, GiveWell.org details charities that are deserving and cost effective, so a lot of your donation isn't going to the CEO, admin fees, etc.
GiveDirectly.org is getting a lot of great press coverage recently. They give money directly to poor people overseas, who are desperately in need, can't afford to eat, etc.
Here's a link to their website and some of the press on them, from NPR, Huffington Post, The Economist, Forbes, Bloomberg, etc.
