I don't know if it's because I'm getting older or something..but.I used to love chocolate, cookies, cake, ice cream and now I want nothing to do with it unless I'm PMSing.

I also used to put so much sugar and creamer in my coffee til it was basically hot chocolate before I could drink it, but recently began drinking my coffee black. I always thought that was disgusting before. Now I can't drink coffee if it's too sweet. It just makes me feel sick.

I'm wondering if I had a sugar addiction all my life and finally getting past it. Anyone else experienced this?

This happened to me too! I didn't realize it until I went to France and everyone was having hot cocoa and Nutella for breakfast. I was like, damn, can a bitch get some scrambled eggs and toast or what? It sucked! When I was a teenager and in my early 20s, I wanted all sugar all the time. Not anymore. It's like, whenever I have a craving for anything now, it's always something savory. I still like desserts, it's just that I rarely want them.

I used to take my coffee the same way too. I still put milk in mine, but sweet coffee makes me want to puke.

Yes. I hit a point around 25 where I started to eat sugar and chocolate, and crave both. It lasted for several years then I got over it, but I did have some withdrawal periods where I felt like I was 'Jonesing' for it, as if sweets were my 'smack.' So I think people can have a sugar addiction.

I also feel adults' palettes can change and you can actually prefer bitter tasting foods. It is not so much that you suddenly like bitter foods (e.g., black coffee), but rather your tastes evolve and now you can appreciate the nuances and subtle layering of flavors (often present in traditionally 'bitter' foods) that you couldn't perceive earlier.

Some well-made Japanese food is like that, for example. On people with simple palettes, the complexity is lost on them, so they don't appreciate it as much as those who do.

Did this happen out of nowhere, or did you reduce your sugar intake? (Either deliberately or not.)

The only times I've had a sweet tooth were when I worked in restaurants where free dessert was always available. Even as a kid I didn't care much for candy, but when I started eating dessert every day I worked, I suddenly started picking up ice cream on the way home, etc. When I quit those jobs and stopped getting free cake, I didn't replace it with more ice cream. Over time I kind of forgot about the ice cream too. So in addition to tastes changing with age, it's an addiction that isn't necessarily hard to kick. (Though of course it's hard for some people.)

I've definitely experienced this after cutting out refined sugar - now fruits and natural sweeteners like honey, maple syrup, etc. are more than enough! Even then, I'll take something savory/protein-filled over something sweet any day.

I believe it happened gradually after my husband moved out. He loves ice cream and candy so I would eat it with him. After he left I stopped buying it..but I just noticed, I only want black coffee now too. I'm very sensitive to sugar or a lot sweetener.

It's interesting that you mention Japanese diet. I've been eating a pretty simple Asian inspired diet since living alone and cooking for one..Mostly rice, some meat and vegetables. Rarely have any fast food or pizza (which I think is loaded with sugar too.) I definitely prefer more bitterness than sweetness. It's just strange after a lifetime of loving deserts and candy.

I think it may have something to do with getting a little older. When I was a teenager I literally lived on candy, esp. sour patch kids. Now I like Reese's peanut butter cups but maybe only like once a month and sour candy just as infrequently. Ditto with the coffee thing. The thing with coffee may be that if you start drinking it when you are young (teens or early 20s) the flavor can be a bit bitter and adding all the milk and sugar makes it more palatable.... just a thought,

Yeah once I realized the havock sugar (especially processed white sugar) can cause to your body I made a conscious effort to cut back. The sad thing is most American consume so much sugar over the course of a year it's crazy! It's even crazier that sugar is in a lot of the foods and drinks we eat daily so I watch labels and cut back and do stevia or agave nectar when possible.

Eventually your tastebuds get used to not having as much sugar and then when you do eat something rich and sugary it seems like too much.

I've had that happen when I was having an anxiety crash basically. I think a lot of the anxious meltdown was because I ate largely sugar and carbs. For about a week I wanted nothing to do with sweets and wanted meat and vegetables.

They've done studies on animals where the animal behaviorally regulates its intake of carbs/protein/fats by choosing the right foods. Maybe that's what your body is doing.

It happens to everyone IME. Happened to me, happen to friends... as we get older we lose our sweet tooth. I don't crave snacks/sweets anymore as I used to as a kid. I think kids are programmed to like sweets or something, they need a lot of energy after all.

I don't eat a ton of added sugar, but I was drinking at least one Coke Zero a day (I love me some fake sugar). I used the Coke Zero to wake me up when I felt like a cup of coffee was too much caffeine, like later in the day. I switched from Coke Zero to black tea or a half caffeinated/half decaf coffee when I need a late afternoon pick-me-up and it has cut down my sweet cravings a lot. I do put Splenda in my coffee, but not nearly as much as before. 1-2 packets now as opposed to 3 or more before. I would say I consume somewhere between 1-4 packets of Splenda a day, which I am ok with.

I just started eating less sugar about a month ago. I eat mostly high protein foods now, like nuts, salads, and I cook a lot of Thai and Indian curries at home, since spices ad so much, that I don't have a taste for very sweet things. When I do eat something sweet, it's a ripe banana in whole grain porridge or I will eat it with some PB2 peanut butter powder, unsweetened cocoa, and some unsweetened almond milk. I also use apple juice to balance out acidity, but only sparingly since there can be a lot of sugar in juice.

I use to crave chocolate...anything during pms. Periods are gone, and so are the cravings.
But i still love cupcakes and cake. It's more of a reward/vice type thing. I work a lot, and don't drink, smoke, or do drugs, so it makes me feel decadent and naughty.
