Default ~* Black Girl Power Thread *~

I've been wanting to post a thread like this for a while. What are some good black girl power movies? Movies that depict strong black female characters in powerful roles. I often see movies with bad shit happening to black women, like the movie "Set It Off". It is about a group of black female bank robbers, but it goes to hell and is heart-breaking. I'm looking for more empowering movies. Not "12 Years A Slave" stuff.

"Jackie Brown" was pretty good. I also like "Beasts of the Southern Wild", but it was from the perspective of a 6-year-old. Really beautiful film, though! One of my favorites.

    Suggestions anyone?

Not one of the historical films like the ones above, but I'd definitely recommend seeing Spike Lee's new joint (lol) Chiraq. The very powerful lead character is a young, brown skin woman with a huge Afro. And she's sexy. While many mainstream films of today are getting better at embracing black beauty, black girls in these roles are usually super light skinned like Zoe Kravitz (no shade, she's gorgeous and awesome)............with straight hair. So yeah, I myself haven't seen it yet, . but I think this film definitely falls in this category.

Anything with Madea....although she is really a woman who is really a man. But hey Madea reminds me of my grandma - don't take no sh*t, good with kids, and funny as hell!

*set it off was a good movie but yeah I hate it when movies are super sad and have the doom and gloom endings that make me cry.

    Also
Waiting to Exhale is a classic - all star black actress as the main cast. Angela Basset, Whitney Houston, etc.

Scandal - black actress portraying a strong leading woman who runs her own PR firm and works with the president of the country who falls in love with her

How To Get Away With Murder - love the role of Analiese strong black woman who runs a criminal defense firm and she has a hot lipstick lesbian lover

I just read all the post in this thread and got a little disappointed. On the one hand Im glad I did see this because I was reminded to watch Girlhood. But on the other hand most of the suggestions are all old. We have to practically hunt down movies where black people aren't overcoming an injustice. Or movies that aren't super preachy. Why can't we just have movies about the day in a life of a person who is black. Not a movie about a being black etc etc. Sorry for the thread jack but I've had this convo a lot lately.

I agree it's very hard to find recent movies w a leading black character, everything is pretty old. But, OP specifically asked for "black girl power" movies which by their nature are going to involve a character overcoming an injustice.

I'm not necessarily looking for a movie about overcoming injustices. I just wanted to see a movie with a black girl(s) as the main character(s). I'm tired of watching movies where the black character dies, or a movie about past slavery or oppression. Those are depressing as fuck. I just want to see a movie where black women are living happy, interesting lives or whatever.

Hollywood is terrible when it comes to black movies. I need to get rich so I can make my own all-black indie film.

Hollywood is far from multicultural and still portrays typical race stereotypes in their roles. It is getting better than what it used to be since the 50's where there were literally no leading black female roles until Dorothy dandridge.

Currently I think Shonda Rhimes is good at breaking the mold in Hollywood and creates shows with actors of all races and with female characters who are powerful.

And I'm sure you'd be good creating your own films Scarlett kitten.

I would like to add a film from the 1980s.

Diva (1981) It is about a hot yet shy French postal worker secretly in love with an African-American opera singer and protecting her from a murderous plot in 1970s Paris. He secretly records her voice and wants to show her how much she means to him as an artist. However, he falls in love with her because of her voice and personality instead of looks. Actually, the opera singer is one of the most complex black woman characters in film history. Plus, her meetings with the French postal worker are pretty genuine.

    My top four picks

    1.Mahogany (1975)
    2.Josephine Baker Story (1991)
    3.Bessie (2015)
4.What's Love Got to Do with It (1993)

Although, the movies does show racism and abuse the actresses performance is heroic. Lynn Whitfield and Angela Bassett should do a film together they are my favorite.
