    Default Dandruff

I have a close friend, not me mind you, a friend who has flakes like snow we she runs her hand through her hair. She has tried several shampoo with little effect. Has anybody had a similar problem and what was used to clear it up? My friend, not me, my friend would really like some ideas. BTW, not me.

I'd suggest your friend use a gentle clarifying shampoo to remove excess residue and dead scalp skin and wash her hair more often.

Also moisturize her scalp as well with something lightweight. Heavy products like mineral oils will just clog the scalp pores and make dandruff worse.

She may also want To consider diet changes as well like taking vitamins and drinking plenty of water.

If all this fails then the dermatologist can prescribe prescription strength anti dandruff shampoo.

Dandruff is a fungal problem, and the scalp must have been irritated or unable to sufficiently protect itself if the yeast was to take over. Use a dab of borax + shampoo to wash and then conditioner on the scalp, the scalp needs to be moisturized to strengthen itself. Also get a shampoo brush or a detangling brush to really help shampoo the scalp. This is my secret recipe to a totally clean scalp and I get compliments on my "thick hair" now. Also focus on a healthy diet as well, this is serious. I used to get really bad dandruff as a malnourished neglected child who also used a shitty shampoo.

Found a helpful article about dandruff causeS and treatment http://www.livestrong.com/article/12444-dandruff/

Notice the differentiation between internal causes and external causes of dandruff and make sure to address both if you treat naturally and/or when consulting with a doctor.

Try a shampoo w/tea tree oil, I agree a diet change w/b helpful.
I use & love African Pride brand, Braid Spray, 2.79 @ Sally's Beauty. It has tea tree oil (not a lot though) aloe, & herbs. It's very soothing/refreshing on scalp, & good for your hair too.
I've read that dandruff linked to a yeast problem, so take garlic pills, lay off the sugar, or @ least cut down on it

Can contest to this as I had such a bad time growing up with dry scalp due to medication. Do a warm coconut oil soak, with a towel wrapped around for about an hour or however long you can stand it. Recommend switching out any shampoo that is a store bought brand for natural alternatives or squeeze lemon juice/grapefruit as an alternative wash. It will make your hair shiny and your scalp will feel very soft and clean of dandruff (Avoid if there is irritation or open wounds) ..also I know it make be a little hard to avoid scratching if irritated so helps to put on soft mittens or use aloe..

i have dry scalp dandruff in the winter, sucks.
i use coconut oil overnight massaged into my scalp..its amazing for your hair too. wash it out in the morning and condition your hair.
then i do a rinse with apple cider vinegar after washing my hair. do like 1 part ACV to 2 parts water, maybe less ACV starting out. get a good organic apple cider too, they sell them at market basket.
sulfur shampoo will wipe that shit out, but its very drying and strong. i'd try the natural solutions first, because both of those are just so damn good for your hair, as well as clearing up dandruff.

I use H&S as a preventative (buy their co-wash online), only wash my hair a couple of times a week, and give myself scalp massages with tea tree oil.

I started using a clarifying shampoo and Nizoral it seems to be working. Thanks to everyone for the great suggestions. It's good to know that I'm not the only one that has experienced this.

Yeah, if I don't take preventive measures, I get dandruff.

Also, make sure you're getting enough zinc. Even a slight deficiency can leave your skin flaky. I take zinc picolinate since I read an NIH study about how that form of zinc most effectively raises zinc levels in the body. It's a micronutrient, so you don't need a ton of it, but slight deficiencies can have large impacts on the body!

    I just bought this, too:

Cheap, but feels effective for removing any scalp buildup (gosh, this sure is a sexy topic, isn't it? Haha). You can use it on dry or wet hair. I've been using it to massage tea tree oil into my scalp once a week (any more often than that and you run the risk of irritating your scalp).

^^No, it's not a sexy topic, but I feel safe talking about really personal topics in this forum.

I've been alternating the clarifying shampoo one day and the Nizoral the next. I have to wash my hair everyday because my skin and my scalp are oily. I like your shampoo brush suggestion to really work in the shampoo and remove any buildup. I'm going to order one.

Clarifying shampoos tend to be pretty harsh, and so are most dandruff shampoos. Stripping your scalp of that much oil on a daily basis could really be aggravating not only the dandruff, but also your scalp's oil production. Scalps do adjust to being washed less often by producing less oil over time. If you can get through the adjustment period, through using arrowroot/cornstarch/dry shampoo and wearing your hair in styles that make oily hair less noticeable (like a cute bun), it's worth it for your scalp's health. Just my thoughts! If I washed my hair every day, my scalp would be fucked.

As someone mentioned, it's a fungal problem. It can be addressed via diet and supplements. A good source is KnowTheCause.com. Best supplement ever for this is SF722 by Thorne Research.

My dandruff went away and I started trying buying cheaper shampoos. We go through shampoo at my place like crazy. Anywhoo, my dandruff is back and even my eyebrows are flaking and inching. I will scratch or rub my eyebrows and get flakes of skin on my eye glasses. I'm assuming that the dandruff shampoo will take care of the eyebrow dandruff?

    Lots of causes

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dandruff

Dandruff is the shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp.[1] As skin cells die, a small amount of flaking is normal; about 487,000 cells/cm2 are released normally after detergent treatment.[2] Some people, however, experience an unusually large amount of flaking either chronically or as a result of certain triggers, up to 800,000 cells/cm2, which can also be accompanied by redness and irritation.

Dandruff is a common scalp disorder affecting almost half of the population at the post-pubertal age and of any sex and race. It often causes itching. It has been established that keratinocytes play a key role in the expression and generation of immunological reactions during dandruff formation. The severity of dandruff may fluctuate with season as it often worsens in winter.[2] Dandruff is rare before puberty, peaks in the teens and early twenties, and declines with age thereafter.[3] Most cases of dandruff can be treated with specialized shampoos. There is, however, no known cure.[4]

Those affected by dandruff find that it can cause social or self-esteem problems, indicating treatment for both psychological and physiological reasons.[5]

That is what the snakes do. I spray the garden with tea tree oil, and I never see the snakes with dandruff.

Jason natural anti-dandruff shampoo works well for me, and it doesn't have a lot of the chemicals that regular shampoos have.
