    Female Exotic Dancer Study -

Enter a chance to win a $75 Visa Gift Card upon completion of the survey.

Take part in a study exploring the life experiences of female exotic dancers. In order to be eligible, the participant must:

    • Be 18 years of age and over
    • Currently employed or formerly employed as an exotic dancer
    • Identify as a biological female
    • In a relationship with a male significant other

This research study is conducted by Monica Gomez, a Clinical Forensic Doctoral Student at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, Los Angeles, who is gathering information in hopes that mental health clinicians will be able to improve their therapeutic skills when working with exotic dancers.

    Participation involves filling out questionnaires:

    • Screening questionnaires to determine eligibility. The study includes questions about child sexual abuse and paternal absence. Because it is important to ensure that participants who experience distress are not negatively triggered by such topics, there will be a Trauma Screening Questionnaire to best avoid that. If eligible, participants will be asked about her age, gender, occupational status as a dancer, and relationship status with a male.
    • Demographics questionnaire. Participants will be asked questions about her ethnicity, relationship status, and length of time in her relationship. She will be asked if she experienced childhood sexual abuse and paternal absence, and she will be asked to indicate where she found the study’s survey.
    • Miller Social Intimacy Scale. Measures level of intimacy by asking about closeness to a partner, affection experienced, satisfaction and importance of the relationship.

Completely anonymous and you can cancel at any time.

Wow. So I took the survey. Totally assumes that if you are a dancer you must have had a fucked up childhood or absent father and are now unable to have healthy relationships. Nowhere to leave comments which is too bad as I would like to give the creator of the survey a piece of my mind. Very skewed and narrow in focus. Bleh... I'd like to do a study comparing people's assumptions based on stereotypes, and what is ACTUALLY going on. Might be more substantive, and relevant if as the study suggests, they are trying to inform mental health practitioners on how best to help "us". Missing the mark big time...

If you guessed what the study is about, they have to discard all your answers (you as a subject as a whole). At least in a serious study (and them offering something of monetary value makes me think this is a relatively serious study, as there is never any money for that). I hope they asked what you think the study is about in one way or another, to determine if you have a clue.

Anyway, this study should never ever measure anything you think they measure and certainly nothing really obvious, as that would just be useless in terms of doing research. So not telling them what you think about their study should have saved you time. It should not be about anything you assume.

Although they seem to have a poor cover story set up for this study. Think about it: "gathering information in hopes that mental health clinicians will be able to improve their therapeutic skills when working with exotic dancers" -> lol. This is not a pressing issue among mental health clinicians, I am pretty sure about that.

    Hmm, I took it.

Very much revolves around relationships with men (significant other and father) which seems odd to me because I would think that mental health professionals would know by now that the "daddy/boyfriend issues" with dancers is only a stereotype, and a lot of us actually have decent relationships with the men in our lives...and it has nothing to do with our jobs...I know women in my DAY JOB that have absent fathers/shitty partners. Thing is, dancers are just more likely to talk about it I feel.

The assumptions this survey makes is so shitty on so many levels. If people were more conscious about the fact that 1 in 4 women are sexually assaulted by the time they get to college then people would realize how fucking dumb the the whole “only sexually damaged women are sex-workers” argument is. 1 out of 4 is a big enough fucking ratio for us to assume that a cross section of women anywhere would show plenty of disturbing stories about abuse. It’s like saying “only sexually damaged women are waitresses,” or whatever.

Sorry all I read again since they double posted was this researcher was a student. She's probably some doe eyed 22 year old with no clue, never stepped foot in a strip club, and doesn't know any strippers and her "theories" about strippers clearly reflect in her biased research (according to those who took the survey).

These questions are NOT scientific in any way, they have a clear agenda and don't even give choices outside of that narrow agenda. The results of this will probably end up in some kind of pearl-clutching documentary of the adult industry somewhere.

And then I got to the last part, which is basically a push-poll designed to make us even more nervous about our relationship...and finally an "abuse hotline" posted at the end?

    What is this crap?

thing is though, all humans have biases, all studies designed and conducted by humans have bias built into each step in the process

one way of handling this in ways that serve to ethically provide spaces in research for peeps to highlight their own needs and concerns as they define them draws on Indigenous Research methodology, which posits that research needs to incorporate those most impacted by it at every single step, including initial ground work and design.

so this study is designed to help "mental health clinicians will be able to improve their therapeutic skills when working with exotic dancers"?

uhhh, instead of retreading the valid critiques above of this really simplistic survey, my first question would be how else are sex workers/exotic dancers impacting/involved in the research and the direction of the study? were dancers involved at the initial planning stages and if so to what extent? are any actual dancers a part of the research team?

the problem with researching the 'other' in this manner is that it usually ignores power imbalances and differences in understanding based on one's positioning and experiences (ontology and epistemology).

in practice this does nothing to assist in creating spaces for voice/agency to those being studied/'helped', usually doesn't end up 'helping' anyone but those getting the grants

I have a purely methodological question for whoever wrote the protocol for this survey, why the criterion "be in a relationship with a male significant other"? I'm not sure if that fully bias the results (although I think so), but from an empiric observation I know that in Mexico (where I from, I do not know any in other countries) bikini/topless/nude dancers (I'd love to see the working definition of "exotic dancers" for this study as well) have a notorious rate of being in a relationship with FEMALE significant others, and that includes myself. In fact, I'm not sure to whom this question should be better addressed, the investigator, the IRB or both.

Just to be fair, since I did not fullfil this criterion I haven't taken the poll and I could not further comment on it.

^^nah, I think you read things correctly; women as victims of men, including romantic relationships cuz lawd knows that's what defines us.

and hush, don't ruin things by mentioning sexual positioning that ruins the dogma of binary male/female relations (please do)

but yeah, brush off and cast off this ish, sincere props to y'all who've spoken out

peeps who want to 'study' need to earn that right (another aspect of IRM)

I don't want to repeat myself, but studies are very familiar to me and this should not, in any way, be researching anything "obvious", not even remotely. You should not be able to guess what this research is about. I am pretty sure, from the poor cover story, that we didn't find the true theory behind this yet (and I am not going to look for it, because I will find it ). If we are close to guessing it, then this study can go straight into the bin..

Monica got her bachelor in 2007, so she should be around 30 (https://www.linkedin.com/in/monica-gomez-383a18ba)

    No need to be upset.

Edit: For all I know this study researches how many camgirls complete a full study causing emotional distress, just to enter a raffle for a voucher (this is a joke)

Actually, I agree with you Sinna, but I disagree on some particulars; of course, they are not researching anything obvious, and yes, we are not supposed to guess what this research is about because we, as potential research subjects, are meant to be informed about it (that is a cornerstone on human research); in fact, that is the reason of having the investigator and the IRB contact information available.

I am not upset, even, I'd love to participate; my question, as previously said, was just methodological; why exclusively dancers (or former dancers) in a relationship with a male partner? I have had relationships with men in the past, but now i'm with a girl, how different the results might be? I havent asked this to them yet, but now I'll take a guess:

    1. Because they did not considered the possibility of other kind of relationships.
    2. Because they already have information on dancers with other kind of relationships (or there is an ongoing parallel project).
    3. Because they preferred to have a simpler analysis and they don't want to have another huge variable to consider, so they assumed this restriction will make easier to them to have a proper results interpretation.
    4. Because the instruments they are using were designed that way (I'm not familiar with this Intimacy Scale, and I didn't go on any further because I didn't want to corrupt their results just because of my curiosity).

In the other hand, my question can be seen as not 100% methodological, but from an ethical perspective why female dancers/ex-dancers in a relationship with a female significant other (like myself) are exlcuded if their goal is "improving mental health clinicians therapeutic skills when working with exotic dancers"? (this is related to the principle of justice as stated in the Belmont report).

I think I'll contact them and I'll let you know. By the way, a raffle for a voucher is ridiculous and the IRB should have a look into that as well.

That's already suggested in the Information she gave on the study which is why I decided not to do it. I've never been raped or abused by anyone in any form in my childhood, so I know that study is a joke. I decided to dance when in my early twenties because I chose not to work a minimum wage job while in school. My taste is expensive, so I needed money to live the lifestyle I loved. I didn't get into it because of anything else. And I never was allowed to have a boyfriend, so an abusive guy I've never had.

To be honest, I think this sudy has limitations (just like any study), but I have no information to say it is biased; I'll explain myself; there have been studies in the past that showed a proportion of sex workers (in a very broad definition that included dancers) had a troubled childhood and/or got into abusive relationships in their history, however, that finding have become a cliché (as if any kind of sex work, let's say, strip dancing, prostitution, phone sex, camgirls, escorting, or whatever, was linked in all cases to some kind of abuse). It is not unusual to have studies designed this way actually to prove the cliché is wrong.

My personal interest in this study is because in Mexico, the cliché became law and the federal government shut almost all strip clubs (with utterly violent raids, i have to say), and a lot of sex shops; not it is illegal to escorts to advertise themselves in newspapers or websites based in Mexico and so on; the interesting part of this law is that neither prostitution, strip dancing and so on are forbidden, but the law assumes that behind any kind of sex work there is an abuser; so, if this trial proves the cliché is wrong, it would be very useful to challenge this biased law (it seems that Mexican legislators can't conceive that a woman choses to dance nude for profit, or whatever if not under duress).
