In Oregon, protest is almost a pass time. Generally, protesters are allowed to just do their thing. The occupy protests went on for months in Portland, with an entire city park in Downtown Portland rendered unusable for the duration of the Occupy protests. Unless the protesters are actively destroying property or harming people, the authorities will leave them alone.
This has actually been a pretty effective strategy in dealing with protests of the kind that is happening in the eastern part of the state. The media will get bored, eventually. Once the world gets tired of them, the state will take steps to get the protesters out of there.
For now, it's the middle of winter in a very remote part of the state. They aren't bothering anyone. The locals are mostly upset about the presence of the media, and could really care less that some guys from Nevada have taken over a bird sanctuary. By spring though, birders will want access again. I'm sure the state will step in at that time to remove the protesters.

Possibly the government learned its lesson from the bad publicity it got at Ruby Ridge and Waco.

Hey, thanks for responding! & thanks, Tour, I didn't realize that about OR
I was just saying, what if I hijacked my library lol
Edit: I did read something about a Native American group being upset, arguing it's really their land, & I guess the schools were shut b/c of this, Idk if they still are.

It's just uprooting the community now. Which they originally came saying they were there for the people. It's over fines from a control fire that got out of control and spread to government owned land. Even if it wasn't a government land, they would still be charged with arson if it reached to someone else's property. It doesn't matter who's land it is. PAY YER FINESSSSSSS and QUIT YER BITCHIN'!
Like I feel like the far left and far right just spend their time complaining and it's just making everything more split. UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH DONT WANT TO LIVE ON THIS PLANET ANYMORE. GG, going to Mars.

But the thing is, the folk who were involved with the arson have said they will take their lumps like men and surrender themselves to complete their time (they had been released but a higher court said no, that was too soon), and stated that nobody speaks for them and they did not ask for this. These outsiders are making a stand for nothing.
The guys who seized the refuge office place said they'd leave if the local citizens asked, but have ignored requests from townspeople, the Indians and the local Sherriff. Then they were going to leave, but then announced "we have heard there are warrants to arrest some of us as we leave, so we won't". No shit, dude, WTF do you expect? A medal? As of today, they just seem to be looking for an excuse to stick around and see if someone, anyone will make a first move so they can cry "look, look, I'm being oppressed!"... except they are visibly, even ostentatiously armed.

Yes^. I saw a vid of them being interviewed remotely, & the reporter mentioned a standoff, the guy got all touchy & said, "No, it's not a standoff, it's an occupation"!
I think they just want attention, like you said, it's all a waste. Lame.

The reason you don't get it is because the entire story is probably bullshit propaganda. See if you can find a foreign version of the same story. It will probably be more accurate.

yeah totally. I meant to edit that in there, but I'm slathering sloot paint on my face. lol.
I really won't be surprised if it's gonna get all Waco and the protesters are gonna try to be martyrs at this point. Don't they have jobs? Don't their kids need to get back in school?

If they are ranchers, they are self employed and don't punch a clock.

The people who were fined/ charged with arson have publicly stated that they want nothing to do with the Bundy's from Nevada. The Hammond's have said repeatedly through their lawyers and to the press directly, that they don't have anything to do with the protests. They are using legal means and feel they can prevail through traditional legal channels. The Hammond's feel that the Bundy's are harming their legal case at this point.
The Sheriff from Harney County offered the protesters amnesty and assistance with travel home if they leave this weekend. The Bundy's said no. There is now talk of cutting off electricity to the building they are occupying. The problem is that in the winter, this can be damaging to the building in the form of pipes freezing, then bursting.
I don't know if you remember the Nevada Ranchers in 2013 who had a stand off with the Federal government when they were being evicted from federal land for not paying a $1 million tax bill? It's the same group. They still haven't paid their taxes.

They probably have family and friends looking after the place.

The leader and some members were arrested. One member was killed during the arrest.
