Default New Hampshire bill to legalize adult prostiution proposed

I could kind of "feel" in my gut that legalization of sex work was on the horizon since the Supreme court upheld same sex marriage, and 4 states plus D.C. legalized weed. Also, Oregon passed the "stripper rights" bill last year, further legitimizing sex workers in this state, anyway.

This is the 1st proposed legalization bill in the US. People are beginning to realize the real victims of the criminalization of sex work are sex workers. For all the efforts to stamp out sex work over the last 10,000 years, we still have thriving sex trade in all corners of the world. Perhaps we are starting to realize that you can't legislate human nature.

I'm for legalization. Criminalization does more harm than good, legalization will at least give buyers and sellers of sex at least a safer way to conduct business. Heck, it may even lose it's appeal to some customers once it becomes legal.

I grew up in nh, ain't no way this will pass in the near future unfortunately. Nh is very conservative, the strip clubs here make you wear a thong and pasties for gods sake. I'm all for legalization ,and since this is the live free or die state I think it's fitting but I don't see it happening

Heck, the story itself says the House Majority Leader has already announced they will see to it that it's not passed.

Sex work has a problem in that it has to fight a two-front war, since it gets attacked from the (expected) Right on morality/values/public order grounds, but it ALSO gets attacked from the Left as an expression of capitalistic exploitation/sexual objectification, and both sides add a healthy dose of "no way, nobody REALLY does this freely, it has to be a sign of damage" presumption.

But, I expected the comments to be all idiotic, and at least half are encouraging. Many people seem to grasp the truth. BTW OP where do you get the 10,000 year figure?

The bill certainly won't pass but it does mark the beginning of a process. After the Amnesty International study it will be harder for opponents to use the standard "promotes drugs, disease, crime" arguments as much. Even the house majority leader didn't use those arguments. He just said that we're not ready for that yet, like we're kids. Even with all this I don't expect sex work to be legalized anytime soon. The NOW and religious right are both strongly against this for very different reasons. What odd bedfellows they make. But who knows, marijuana is slowly being legalized across the country.

That's about the time that goods and services were starting being exchanged as opposed to communal/nomadic societies. Ya know, the "oldest" profession.
