Angry "I dance to that song" thoughts?

Hi! So I just moved to a new club and have these two songs I usually dance to. I'd been there for like 2 or 3 weeks now using them and yesterday a girl came up to me saying that one of the songs was hers, and since she'd been there for 2 years she'd appreciate it if I didn't use "her" song because it causes "confusion"... I backed off for the night but I honestly think that's ridiculous and I don't want to be pushed around but at the same time don't want to aggravate her. What should I do? I can do other songs obviously but I just can't believe she's so possessive of it...

Unfortunately there are always girls that would steal your songs, your attires and even your moves (and of course, your customers); it is annoying but either you claim those songs back in a polite but firm manner or get some new songs. Unfortunately such steals are eventually unavoidable, so I suggest to have a backup song and develop a stayle so unique that no one would try to steal your songs.

Eh, personally I'd just pick a different song. Yeah, it's ridiculous for her to think she owns a song just because she's danced to it before, but given that she made a fuss about it, she's obviously looking for drama and you have nothing to gain by giving it to her. There are so many other songs to dance to that don't come with a confrontation.

Dance to it when she's not there. I would say laugh in her face because I think those kinds of people are beyond ridiculous , but it's not worth drama

Agreed that it's not worth drama but it depends on club culture, IMO. In a large corporate kind of club, yeah, let it go, there's way too many girls to worry about who has what song and I doubt the DJ gives a shit.

On the other hand, my home club is full of girls who've been there a long time. We're talking 10 years for some of them. So yes, lots of us have certain spots in the locker room and songs that are 'ours'. It's not uncommon for an established girl to tell a new girl to move her shit, etc. and management will side with the established girl and not care if you get your stuff thrown on the floor.

Now with songs, if a girl who takes care of the DJ routinely has favorite songs she always uses, and a new girl asks for one, the DJ will just tell her that he's already played it today. If he plays it for her, it means the old girl doesn't tip him out for shit so he doesn't care about keeping her happy.
So in your case, my guess is that if the DJ didn't care enough to save it for her, she really can't say anything and I'd tell her to take it up with the DJ since HE is ultimately the music decider.

    This ^^

I rarely have problems with this but when you do, ultimately it's the dj's call if he wants to play it for you, for her, or just play the song more than once a night. I've found good covers/remixes of songs I like to dance to thanks to djs telling me, "well I can't play x version but I'll let you use this one of the song"

It's ridiculous, but she seems like a drama llama, so I'd just let her have it. Just out of curiosity, what song was it lol.

The DJs don't really care actually the one tonight was like "that's ridiculous just tell her it's my fault if she gives you shit" when I told him a girl said I couldn't use the song... So hooray DJ!

It's ridiculous. Now if she paid the artist for some use of the song and owns the copyright then yeah it's HER song.

Technically there is so much good music out there that the djs shouldn't have to recycle songs and everyone could dance to songs unique to them. There is also automated dj software that doesn't allow a song filed for one dance to be added to file of another dancer. Cause apparently dancers getting pissy over someone dancing to "their" song is a common issue.

Girls dance to my music I tell them thanks! Hahaha. Thanks for liking my genre and trying to copy my style. Then I change songs. I hat dancing to the same songs over and over again anyways.

If you like her then you can be courteous and not dance to the song while she there. If you don't like her then tell her to focus on making vip money, not the songs, and to kick rocks!

I have worked with girls like this before who think they own songs, dance moves, customers, etc. Just dont engage them or take it any further. But dont let them be rude or push you around either! If the girl gets mean or aggressive about it, then you can say, "relax sweetheart, its just a song! its really not worth it". Otherwise, just dont dance to that song when she is working with you. When she is not around, dance to it all you want. And make sure you tip your DJ good, he sounds like a cool guy.

I'm a person that is picky about my songs. A lot of dancers ask me "Why does he play good music for you?" often. Simple answer: I have paid a lot of money over the years to have my playlist. My DJ won't play a song on my list for someone else unless 1) He asks me first, 2) Already has the song set to play and I end up doing dances in the back instead of going onstage, 3) I have told him I'm over a song and it's open to the other dancers, or 4) I'm not working.

However, I would never go directly up to a dancer about one of my songs being played. That is something I would take up with the DJ myself. I agree with Selina. The DJ takes care of the dancers that take care of them.

If she is a drama starter that won't shut up, just pick a new song. If she is pulling a power play to intimidate you, but wouldn't do anything other than talk, ignore her. It's music, there are plenty of good songs out there.

Eh, shit happens. Leave it alone -it's the dj's issue not yours. Let her talk to the dj if she doesn't want him playing it for anyone -then she'll have to pay him more money.

That's why I pick stuff nobody would ever dance to. I doubt if any of these whippersnappers will play Dimmu Borgir or Children of Bodom.
