I was curious if you have to take steps to keep your videos/streams private. I know there are some smart people out there, but I wouldn't want my work ending up on some random free site.

Once you get online, once you start broadcasting, once you upload that video it's out there forever and ANYONE can upload that recording. Someone records your live session and pops it up on a tube site, then someone downloads it and they upload it to a forum, and from there it snowballs.
If you don't want people capping you and uploading your videos to free sites then you should stay off the internet. That's the only way for you to stay off free sites.
EVERYONE gets recorded and posted.

It's not a matter of if you get recorded, but when. If you can't accept that inevitability then simply don't get into this line of work. Ultimately there's nothing you can do to "keep your stream private." You can potentially get videos taken down after they're posted, but it'll just happen again.
If I find a video of me on a tube site, I just use it as free promotion and put my referral link in the comments.
So your never paid for the views on the free sites? Would it be better to become a contract performer or something to that extent. I know nothing about camming and was curious to how the girls actually make money. I have a friend who has been doing it for a hot minute and tells me she makes money but is still sleeping on my couch- lol (sometimes and I don't mind helping someone in a tight spot) She dances too, but mainly cams b/c the money is that good but she also said her videos are all over the place, so it makes it hard sometimes.
Unless YOU upload them and get paid fractions of a penny on each few hundred views, then no. I think you can do that on Pornhub (?) maybe, but you'd have to have a massive following to make any money.
If someone else uploads the video you'll likely never find it or know that it was uploaded unless you're looking for it specifically.
If you really want to cam then you need to go through all of the stickied threads on this forum and really look into it. It's not easy money and if you don't know what you're doing then the money can be horrible. People will be mean, degrading, and aggressive. They will be cheap and demanding. It's a lot to handle.
If her videos are all over the place then it's probably how she is selling her videos or how she is doing her shows.

Depending on the site you're on, you can earn money through pay-per-minute private shows, or through tips. Either method can potentially be very lucrative, but it isn't easy. It's a serious hustle, and requires a mix of time, dedication, looks, personality, and luck. There's a wealth of information on this forum that will help you understand specifically how we're making money.

Camming is live-action and interactive. There's a reason guys pay big money to watch it instead of/in addition to recorded clips.
"Do you do tech support in exclusive?"
Don't call me BB...I'm not the prime minister of Israel!

Almost never, because they are free porn sites where the viewers aren't paying. On top of that, the porn sites usually have no idea who you are and couldn't give you money if they wanted to. I think it would help if you understood how the videos get out there.
1) The cam site records you and posts the recording on a free porn site as advertising. The cam site owns all your video, so this is within their rights, and they don't have to pay you for it. You can reduce the chances of this happening by not doing large group shows and by making your private shows as personalized as possible. A video in which you are obviously performing specifically for "Mike" isn't so appealing to the masses, so they might not choose to post it.
2) You make a video and sell it to a customer. You get paid when the customer first buys the video, but once he has it on his computer, it's hard to control. Some of the guys like to "share" the videos by posting them on free sites or forums. It's illegal, but very hard to police on the internet. How to avoid: don't make videos to sell (or give away).
3) You do a live cam show, and the customer uses technology magicks to record what he is seeing on his screen. He then "shares" it like in #2. How to reduce the chances of this happening: same as #1 for the same reasons; also, charge a lot for your shows and never do anything in free chat - even if he records your show, a guy who paid $100+ for the show and the subsequent recording is a lot less likely to just give it away to random wankers, because why should they get it for free when he had to pay a lot for it.
Does it make more sense why it's hard to keep your videos off the internet, and why you aren't paid for them? Your roommate probably isn't being terribly careful, but it's not like her videos are everywhere because she allowed it or is getting paid for it.
I'm assuming that you aren't asking about the actual logistics of getting paid, but rather why we get paid, even when there's so much free porn out there. The thing is, if a guy just wants to wank it while watching some girl getting naughty on his computer screen, a free porn video will work for him. What cam girls do isn't just about letting guys watch us masturbating (or whatever) - it's about having a live, interactive experience. Guys pay for cam shows because they can generally find a model that has most/all of the characteristics he likes, and have her act out whatever fantasy he has at the moment. There's a level of spontaneity, and as they get to know each other, she can surprise him with little things she knows he likes. It's like hearing a recording of a stranger saying "I love you" vs being live on the phone with someone you care about as they say it. It's the same words, but a totally different experience, and that difference is worth paying for. Even guys that have recordings of you often continue to pay for cam shows, because the video isn't a substitute for spending time with you live.
I'm not sure what this means. Are you asking about being a straight up porn actress that gets paid per shoot?

Just an example I remember smth like 8 years ago, I was performing (I used to dance not stripping) and the pics were posted on the site of the club (small city) where I was performing. Months later one of my friends saw my pics on another site (forum) totally unrelated to the club, city, etc where guys were all about how great my body was and whatnot.
You have zero control over the Internet. Just saying. If he did not tell me I wouldn't know, and how much I don't know now for my own sanity.

Do you mean your friend isn't making money on cam due to those recordings?
That isn't the reason, Done porn for 15 years. there are videos of me everywhere, still make money on cam
You can't. However, you can benefit from assholes uploading and spreading your stuff.
Turn your username into a brand. So if you cam under the name ExampleBB, make a Twitter page with that name, email address and website.
Put a big watermark on your videofeed with ExampleBB or a whiteboard with "ExampleBB" behind you.
Make sure you tweet at least once a day, getting a big following.
No you can get cheeky and tweet shit like; if you want real 1 on 1 time with me, make a Skype booking through my website.
Or, want to have some "insert thing you only offer on Skype and not on bigboxwebsite" fun with me? Book a skype booking.
You now have indie traffic and higher percentage you get to keep thanks to your watermarking.
If you can't beat the assholes, join them.
