Default And the Oscar goes too..

Will Smith's female impersonator husband, Jada was right about some diversity. I think the Oscar should go to a powerful film I just saw called 'Beasts Of No Nation' on Netflix. Very Oscar worthy; ((It made Leo DI DiCaprio's 'The Revenant' look like a children’s movie in comparison)). I was floored on this one! I wonder what else is out there I should see that is not being promoted as much.

You didn't hear much about it because it was boycotted by movie theaters because they dare debut it on Netflix at the same time as in theaters.

It was good, but I was referring more so on the intense physiological level if compared side by side. like ummm...your physiological response to a scary movie on brain or heart beat. Maybe I felt it strongly b/c they were children. And in terms of the capability, the kids in the film were not professional actors who seem to handle the heavy theme of violence well as non-pros in 'Beasts Of No Nation'. That seems Oscar worthy, or at least a mention for that alone which it never got.

Beasts of No Nation was an amazing film. It sucks that it didn't get an Oscar nomination because they don't know how to handle Netflix yet. At least it'll get a wide viewing. If you have Netflix, see this pic. The Revenant was also good, but they are very different films.

Both directors were going for as realistic as possible while filming these to particular movies. The actors were asked by the directors to create worlds so intense that it would naturally produce physiological effects too the human being; This would be beyond method acting. So although they are different films, the idea and effect is not; on each actor. The prolonged or severe emotional stress can affect a person's physical body and mind. So if I had to choose one over the other I guess it would be 'Beasts Of No Nation' based on the children's age and how were able to pull off what professional actors already know based on talent and experience. Both good films but what makes a film or performance truly Oscar worthy? I felt the physiological effect on both films just watching it. Imagine preforming in it, Id end up with post traumatic stress disorder! And as a kid being ask to do what they were doing? Yikes..

That's cool, but I was just stating my opinion on The Revenant. I wasn't actually comparing it with anything.

I have really bad deja vu about writing what I am about to write. Don't all jump on me at once... Do the Oscars historically under nominate African American actors and Actresses? Yes (and no!) However, about 11.5% percent of nominees historically have been African American (although I have seen this statistic as low as 9 percent) which blows a bit of a hole in my theory. And, ladies and gents do we know what percentage of Americans are identified as African American? 12.3 according to the 2010 census. So the difference between African American actors as nominees and the number of Actors in the pool who are likely to be African American statistically is marginal.

And I do realize that the argument has been made for more diversity, (although I see this has become a black/white issue because even in 2016 Americans are too ignorant and un-evolved to move past their grand parents way of thinking) and not specifically about Black Americans but there have been very few Latino/a, Asian, Native American or Middle Eastern nominees either (in fact I am not sure if there has ever been a single Asian, Native American or Middle Eastern nominee) but, I didn't really research this much. Also, I am referring to actors specifically and not production people, music writers or costume designers.

It is true that the Oscars need to improve the diversity of the nominees year after year. However, I do not feel like public outcry should dictate that Actors and Actresses be nominated for awards or trophies because there is some stupid quota to fill. People should be nominated because they are best in their field and their skin color/ ethnicity should NOT even be part of the discussion. Is there a specific black actor or actress that was snubbed this year? I am asking this legitimately, I do not know that I saw a single movie that is nominated for any of the awards? Or is it that perhaps attention was brought to the lack of diversity as a result of the DIVERSITY of the Emmy winners- Viola Davis, Uzo Aduba (sp?) and Regina King all won because they played amazing characters and deserved to win. (Although, personally I was secretly routing for Taraji!).

And lastly, will any of this shit matter in a month? If Leo doesn't win the best male actor this year the Oscars are going to lose all credibility anyway!

Black films have received recognition at the Oscars. Selma, 12 years a Slave, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Precious just to name a few in recent years. I agree the nominees should be based on merit and not to fill some quota, and I also think the percentage of films represented is accurate to the quality of black films made. Beasts of No Nation should have been nominated, I agree, and it was a snub. Plenty of quality white films get snubbed as well. People are mad that the only nomination Straight Outta Compton got was for the writers, who are white. O'Shea Jackson Jr at least deserved a nod for best leading actor, but I don't view it as whitewashing the Oscars that he didn't. Again sometimes quality films and performances get snubbed. Annie Hall won best picture when Star Wars wasn't even nominated. I am loving the nominations this year, and I think it's sad that people are all in a tizzy.

Also while Leo definitely deserves a win for his overall achievement in film, and his Revenant performance was solid, I just think Eddie Redmayne was better. His performance in Danish Girl was gut wrenching. Room needs to win Best Picture and Anomalisa needs to win best Animated Feature. (Can you tell I obsess about the Oscars a little bit?)

I just saw Room today. Good stuff, I think I'll check out Danish girl. Thanks!

I didn't think of Straight Outta Compton. I just ran out to run an errand and heard they gave an Oscar to a black actress for the "Gone with the Wind". That was during segregation period, so I do have to give a little credit to the Academy. Although all of those members are long dead....

Yes Hattie McDaniel. First black actress to win an academy award. Amazing when you consider she wasn't even allowed to attend the film premier with her peers. Check out her acceptance speech on youtube. She's darling.

Completely agree-very brutally honest and powerful film about human cost of wars!
Idris Elba is superb in this, very impressive.

Mom commented recently that one of the local movie theaters don't even bother playing the Black movies, and I realized wow, she's right. This particular theater she's referring to didn't even play Straight Outta Compton, despite all the T.V. advertising for it. I remember that this theater also didn't play the Biggie movie 'Notorious' when it came out. I'm curious if they'll even play this new movie about Jesse Owens (it's called Race). It's okay though...I like the Regal theater better.
