    Default No stamina

I've been dancing for almost 11 years but for the last few years I was very reliant on alcohol and coke to work. I've now been clean and sober a month and I love it, I oddly have more confidence, am more focused and working more shifts as I don't have to struggle with hangovers/comedowns. So all good, except one thing. I have so much less stamina.

I feel weak and shaky at work after doing a lot of dances and get very tired. I'm relying a lot on sugar to get me through, and protein bars etc. I can't drink anything with caffeine so that's not an option. I've really noticed how much my feet are killing now too and overall its hard to stay in the zone.

I don't know if part of it is to do with the fact that I'm nearly 30 so the last time I worked sober I had all the energy of being a babystripper. However I know there's girls older who seem pretty energetic too. I've started going to the gym to try and see if that helps and I'm eating pretty healthily, although maybe not enough on the days I work as I have a problem with bloating and get self conscious.

Is there anything else I should be doing? Our busy season is about to hit which means our hours will be longer and at the moment I'm struggling with 9pm-5am. I honestly feel like I've been hit by a truck the next day. But I want to do well and make as much money as possible.

    Any ideas or tips?

A lot of what you're talking about sounds like cocaine withdrawal, which, if you were doing coke consistently for years, could take a while to get through. Fatigue, irritability, sugar / carb cravings, headaches, depression, insomnia, hypersomnia, etc. etc.

If you don't eat consistently, your body will have a tendency to 'bloat,' as it's trying to store as much food as possible for the next time when you stop eating. If you eat consistently and get on a consistent poo schedule (eat veggies, fruits, and drink lots of water / tea), bloating shouldn't be an issue. I'm guessing you work a few times a week and cut your food intake dramatically on days you work. That's enough of an inconsistent eating schedule for your body to wise up and slow your metabolism (mild starvation mode).

If I were you, I would focus on consuming a healthy, well-rounded diet (veggies! fruits! lean meats! water!) and getting consistent exercise (walks in nature or even around the neighborhood count, yoga and similar are even better). Your neurotransmitters are messed up from years of treating your body poorly (cocaine is a triple reuptake inhibitor, thus rendering it particularly difficult to kick as a habit). Eating well and exercising will help your body normalize both physically and mentally.

I'm not sure if it's a withdrawal as I don't feel this way any time other than at work and I don't know if I did enough for that. I would only use on the weekends and even then I'd try to limit it to a reasonably small amount.

I do agree with you about the food though. I'm trying to eat healthily anyway at the moment, I've been logging it all on an app but I probably do need to eat more regularly, little and often.

    Thank you for responding xx

And I think I have messed up my metabolism as I've been dieting and exercising for 3 weeks now and haven't lost a single pound I hope it's reversible.

Do you feel you're overweight? You could be gaining muscle and maintaining your (healthy) fat stores, which would result in net gain, or gaining muscle and losing fat stores, which would result in no weight gained or lost.

Throw out the scale and focus on how you look and feel overall. It's too easy to micromanage our bodies!

Is it an option for you to stop working for a month and use that time to normalize your body, eating schedule, exercise schedule, and weight? That could take some of the immediate pressure off of feeling the need to diet to stave off 'bloat'. It'd also be healthy for your brain!

    Along with Charlie's excellent advice...

Have you tried drinking green tea?

It has only a fraction of the caffeine that coffee does but it definitely works to help you feel energized!

Sugar is the worst thing for getting through long nights. It causes a spike in your blood sugar, which, after an initial peak, wears off leaving you feeling weak and shaky. Best thing to do is eat a complex carb meal (e.g. porridge with no sugar and plain yogurt) before setting off. Make sure your snacks are not sugary - e.g. wholemeal grains. If I danced on sugary snacks, within about 30 - 40 minutes I would break out in a sweat, get weak and shaky, need to sit down etc. I've learned the hard way! xx

No Charlie, not able to take time off unfortunately. No I haven't tried green tea, thanks Belle! Oh I guess the sugar is doing more harm than good, thanks Feline. I'll have to plan and prepare my work snacks better.

Green tea, protein shakes, things like bananas throughout your shift should help. Also, take 15 minute breaks and work less hours. Add a half hour each time you work till you get back up to your normal shift length. Start running/exercising a little more each time you work out. I like to do the stair stepper. Drink lots of water throughout your shift as well.

Have some organic orange juice when you wake up. Get one that has calcium and vit D. The vit C will give you a pick me up.

Two non-traditional hacks- giant "big gulp" sized cups of lemonaide (either made at home or grabbed from the drive thru) & making sure you go to the bathroom (number 2.) Having fluid in your system pushes things out & makes your body functions chug along- it helps you feel less stress & contributes to well being.

BTW everyone is different, I have mega-fatigue during period weeks. I'm like a ball of energy all the time except for that week. So sometimes you HAVE to sleep extra.

Also, protein- eggs, peanut butter, protein bars....etc. Clif Bars now has a new version of their product that beats the original by a long shot. I just totally forget what they are called, but they're rectangle shaped.

i've had a LOT MORE energy since i started working out regularly and eating healthy. I have worked 5 days in a row from 9-4am and woke up to do 90 min hot yoga the last 3 days and i do a round of insanity before i get ready for work at night. All of this on a lot less sleep than i used to.

i even drank at work, but very little and only vodka club soda and water inbetween.

what also really helps is BCAA's. look it up, i got mine at GNC they are amazing for energy and help with sore muscles.

i thought the same thing, but it works. I also noticed it's mental. I used to tell myself things like 'if i have to work tonight i can't do insanity because i won't have energy' or 'there's no way i can wake up for yoga if i work', but as soon as i believed i could, it worked.

i think eating healthy, the working out and the bcaa's really do the trick. and i use b vitamins and drink wheatgrass shots. basically anything and everything you can do to get natural energy. coffee gives me short term energy, if that.
