    Default Car Recommendations

I'm in the market for a new car! Give me rec's! What do you drive? Do you like it or hate it?

Ive been considering a Fiat, but they have terrible reviews and reliability ratings. I also am considering a Kia Soul or Nissan Cube but they seem a little too big for my tastes. I live in a city, in a really dense portion, and while I do have parking, it's parking everywhere else that I'm worried about lol.

So I bought a used Mini Cooper a few years ago for 11k, but have finally decided to replace it. I decided I'm not a fan of German cars due to the lack of reliability I experienced and high cost of parts. I wouldn't mind the high cost of parts if it was actually reliable, but it's not. Turns out, minis have horrible reliability ratings that are less than average. Combine that with a high cost, and I don't see any good in replacing it with the same car lol.

I'm super picky, it sucks lol. I only like retro or very sleek classic cars. I'm considering everything though.

FYI totally forgot my login to my last acct with the same name so had to make this one

I have a Kia Optima, and I'm happy with it. Subaru gets very good ratings.

I typically buy used cars 2-3 years old, so it just depends. I'm paying cash so preferably less than 11-12k, but I'd go up all the way to 18-19 and finance the rest if the car is worth is. We are talking used cars, not new, but I'd consider new I just think it's a bad investment.

I'm a pro domme in person for work which is a cash flow business so I don't really have proof of income aside from random bank deposits. I don't have like a letter of employment or pay stubs, and I think one or the other is usually wanted to finance. I also work in medicine part time but I'm so part time that I don't want to bother to use that as income lol but maybe I could get an employment letter from them. So I'd rather not finance due to the no letter of employment thing. I can get around it if need be tho!

If you're going to buy a used car, I recommend getting a Japanese one. If you want something small, may a Scion would be good. Also, the Honda Fit gets good ratings.

Okay I was looking at scions but why are there like 6 different models that look entirely different? I like the little boxy one but I think they don't make that one anymore because all the others were round. I tend to like small cars either retro, very square, or generic shaped and plain as fuck in black.

Everyone keeps telling me Toyota or Honda, especially those who have to hear my shit about how my car keeps having oil leaks lol. They're like get a reliable Toyota or Honda and everything will be fine! But I can't stand the shape of any of them. I don't understand why I care so much about shape, like I shouldn't but I do way too much

Scion still has the 2015 xb listed on their website.

Definitely considering it in black. I swear I didn't see it before when I looked. I still want to know why they have like 6 completely different cars all named Scion though. Who does that??

It's exactly like a Kia Soul. They look the same but Kia Souls are 1 degree closer to a Mini Cooper. Has anyone owned either of these? Experiences? Which one is more reliable??

Scion is a brand, it's a subsidiary of Toyota. It's the same thing as Toyota having the Camry, Corolla, etc... Brand is Scion, xB, xD, tC etc are all models.

But even camrys and corollas there's only like very minimal changes and not a lot of completely different models out at once. Why wouldn't they just name them all different things? I swear, take a Google, they're all SO different and look nothing alike lol

I had a Toyota Corolla, and although it was about the most boring car ever, it was exceptionally reliable. I put hundreds of thousands of miles on that car, and even at 10 years old it always started right up. I'm kicking myself for selling it, now.

I now drive a Dodge Ram 1500, bought it brand new a couple of years ago. I needed a truck for my cycling hobby.

Omg I just can't do it. I can't. That and Prius. I'd rather get a new unreliable Mini and I don't know why I feel this strongly about cars, but I guess I do. I wish I didn't.

What's a sleek classic looking car that looks good in black and isn't a BMW? What if I got like a Lexus that's a few years old? How are those? Experiences?

I'm going to keep Mini for another month I think. Or maybe not since I'm scared to drive her and have been ubering everywhere lol. But I don't want to rush into another car purchase and get stuck with something full of problems.

In the last year, Mini had 8k of internal work done. Thankfully it was still under warranty for most of that, but now the warranty is expired. She did just turn 7 years old so I don't know what I was expecting lol. But still! For the amount I took care of her, she shouldn't have had that many issues.

I talked to my guy friends who are car people and they're like duhhhh BMWs are full of problems! I swear I had no idea that was a thing. I thought German cars were supposed to be good?

Until recently, I was driving a Camry that was just a smidge older than me. It was a little rickety towards the end (needed a new radiator hose, a couple other replacements) but it handled a cross country move just fine before I donated it last year. If I get another one right now, it should be close to the same status as my old one right in time for me to hit the "mid life crisis" stage where you're supposed to buy a new fancy car anyways, so hey, timing! But instead, the struggle is whether I should get a small, long-ish term investment like a Camry, or something bigger that I can use in the here and now that's big enough to haul all my stuff around the country while I travel. There's always U-Hauls and storage units, but eh. The debate continues. No rush.

I'd avoid the Fiat 500 or Mini since those are more fashion statements rather than actual cars; I had a Fiat Idea (a model never sold in USA) and it was amazingly reliable (until I drove it into a ditch), but I know the 500 is not built the same way; Mini is a good car, but maintenance is very expensive. Toyotas are most of times very reliable although not that amusing to drive. In my opinion, avoid Chryslers as if they were the plague. Regarding Ford, the German-built Fiesta is really good, reliable and fun to drive (but I don't know if it is sold there). So, all things considered, perhaps I'd pick a Honda; please consider that they have a lot of engines, so even a small car might have a powerful engine beneath the bonnet.

BMWs are junk (in the view of someone who doesn't have time or money to waste on a car breaking down.)

I recommend Nissans & Toyotas, they are crazy reliable. & Crazy tough.

Kia Souls ride really good and are good on gas. I drive one now and I love it. They are spacious, but not too big. And they light up inside when u play music, it's so cool!

I forgot to mention the perenially popular Hondas. Some last well over 20 years with minimal issues. For a part time ride you can't go wrong with the pricing on an older one.

I have to disagree with you on German Cars being unreliable. I have owned a BMW and a Mercedes, and my sister has had a VW and a Mercedes and all four vehicles were flawless. The reason German cars are considered luxury brands in North America is because of the high degree of precise engineering involved in their construction. I agree that Hondas and Toyotas can take a beating without letting you down. Also, I don't know what city you are in but would a smart car work for you/ I have seen them for sale online for $6K or less.

Scion is a 'dead brand' - will stop selling in USA soon, wouldn't recommend unless you are into cars and don't mind 'managing repairs'. (This from a Saab guy that knows about 'dead brands'...) ;-)

Im in LA and probably won't be leaving anytime soon unless I move out of the country.

Omg I've owned 3 cars and the first 2 were American and had 0 problems ever. Then the German Mini I had issues every other month and I had maintained it regularly. Minis are still my fav car and my dream car but the lack of reliability makes me never want to own one again.

I feel unsafe driving smart cars. They seem too small and like I would die in an accident. So I wouldn't feel comfortable owning one.

I like the idea of a Miata and had no idea they still made those, but I feel like the price point is too high and I couldn't do a 2-seater car. Minis already had space issues as it was but it was a good size.

I agree that Minis and Fiats are trash cars and are solely made to be pretty! I don't know why competitive brands like Toyota and Honda havent ripped them off yet and made a superior car that's both cute and reliable without being too $$$!

Yeah I thought I had heard that but then someone pasted the site. They stopped making it as of 2015, the model I like.

So far the front runner is the Kia Soul but I need other ideas!
