Default I'm Addicted To Coffee Help!

Has anyone here quit their addiction to coffee? I started a year ago after my BA when I wanted energy and relaxation (yes coffee energizes and relaxes me!) and couldn't drink. I was so scared to take anything for fear of messing up the surgeons hard work. So then came my coffee addiction lol

I want to minimize it but I feel like if I have it once then I just want more more more. What did you do to combat this? I have tried green tea but don't like taking it days in a row or I feel like it loses potentcy!

Try yerba buena tea, or many other herbal teas that can sub for coffee. I have to take breaks from coffee for different reasons.

I've always wanted to get into tea but could never get over the herby taste. I don't want to add sugar. What do you add to make it sweeter or taste better?

Girl coffee has benefits too. It can be relaxing, help with focus and mental clarity, it can boost energy, etc. Nothing wrong with a cup of coffee a day. The downside to coffee is not all of us can handle the caffeine in the coffee. It can be addictive and too much can negative effects like bringing on anxiety, insomnia, etc.

I think the important thing is moderation. I believe as long as it's 150mg or less of caffeine you should be fine.

Also you can opt for caffeine free, decaf, coffee. Quality decaf coffee can taste just as good as the regular coffee.

Another thing is the sugar in most coffee is processed white sugar. Go without sugar if possible but if not then opt for natural sugars/sweeteners.

I use stevia or honey. Used to use Splenda but it was making me feel ill.

I just quit my caffeine addiction, so this thread is perfectly timed! Yes, it is possible to quit your coffee addiction. I had to stop drinking it because

    1. I was drinking threw cups a day + energy drinks and
    2. I have serious anxiety problems and I had a flare up. The caffeine made it so much worse, I was in tears almost every night because I was so stressed and I knew the caffeine was making it worse.

I did it over the course of a week. I didn't drink a morning cup. I waited until the middle or the end of the day to drink coffee. If the withdrawals were too serious, I drank a cup of green tea with chamomile.*

The worst day(s) will be towards the middle of the week. I had two really bad experiences, but I will share them for your sake.

On day two or three I had a hallucination of my husband sitting at his desk. As I walked towards him, he started getting up and hiding behind a door. I laughed and asked why he was hiding like that...and then I heard my husband ask what I was talking about from the bathroom. He was in the bathroom the whole time! No one was hiding, when I looked nothing was there. Of course I immediately knew it was a hallucination because it was soo quiet and grainy. It was really concerning at the time, but fortunately it didn't happen again.

I felt so sick, when I was in the bathtub I had cold sweats and my eyesight was browning out. I couldn't think straight. I asked my SO to bring me a cup of coffee because I knew I was going to throw up or pass out. I almost did. When I started drinking the coffee my head started to spin and I felt less and less ill. It was some pretty serious withdrawal. I slept pretty well that night though.

After that it was easy sailing. I have been sleeping pretty restlessly, but it's slowly getting better every day.

I am sure your withdrawals won't be as serious as mine where. I was drinking way too much, and it was definitely damaging me.

Stock up on chamomile tea or sleeping aids, you're going to need them to get through it. I know you can do it! Please update us and tell us how it goes if you can.

(*Chamomile calms you. My theory is that green tea and chamomile work together to get the chamomile to your heart and body quicker.)

Cinnamon tea, which was recommended by my acupuncturist is a great replacement and very stimulating. I love coffee but had to give up as it was exacerbating my anxiety. I have a cup of earl grey once when I wake up and then another halfway through the day. I feel sooooo much better for it. I still have the odd coffee for a treat, but I'm no longer fixed on the stuff (and when I do have it, it makes me super-anxious and really affects my sleep). xx

How can I get a lot of energy without coffee though? Just tea with stevia? How do I know which tea to pick? Are some brands better than others? I'm so new to tea! Maybe I should make a tea thread?

I had this bad - I knew all about coffee, was a coffee snob, had the awesome brewing set up, and I basically kept some around all day. I ordered it at breakfast, lunch, dinner. Then one evening, during a presentation, I had a panic attack *on stage* which caused me to think I was having a heart attack. I couldn't stop, I had to finish, but I literally thought I was going to die. Afterwards a friend raced me to the emergency room. After an hour of tests, the doctor basically laughed at me (NYC docs are tough) and told me I was a bonehead and to never have 8 big cups of coffee before anything ever.

Since then I've switched to decaf, which tastes worse, I only drink it in the morning, no sugar and skim milk. They say that drops 750 calories a day and you sleep better at night.

I haven't replaced it with anything and I miss having a cappuccino at night with dessert at restaurants. I'll find something to replace it with eventually hopefully a little less disruptive.
    Where Am I? Missing NYC

So far I've only had coffee once this week! But I've been replacing it with tea. It looks like I always need some form of caffeine. How does everyone feel about caffeine? Is it healthy? Tolerable? Bad for you?
