    Dizzy Using Google Voice...

Anyone use Google Voice to receive their calls? I'm kind of tired of paying and carrying around 2 phones, looks funny too. I have a google voice number attached to my body rub email so its not attached to anything personal except for my personal phone and I would be using a GV app to make the calls etc.. I tried searching for prior threads on this but I guess because of the word Google way too many irrelevant threads show up. Please tell me your opinion or reservations on using Google Voice for this kind of work.

I don't use Google Voice but can someone figure out your information from using it? Can they see the email its attached to? This makes me really curious

I use google voice. I'm not sure if someone could find a way to figure out the email it's attached to, but I have mine attached to an email address created specifically to use with google voice in the context of it being for work. So it's not as though it's my personal email address pops up or it has anything identifying going on with it anyway - fake name on the account, my work name in the main body of the email address.

The only issue I ever had with it was someone texting me, using my work name in the beginning of the text, and the preview popped up on the screen while I was showing someone something on my phone and they were like "Why are they calling you this name?" But because it just says "Google voice message" rather than the name of the sender until you click on it, I pretended it was a wrong number. Now I have it set so that my phone vibrates or makes a noise when I get a message, and the icon will show a notification if you're going through your apps, but no preview pops up on the screen. It's kind of a pain cuz I can sometimes miss a message for hours if I'm not paying attention to the phone or specifically checking the app, but it's the best course of action for privacy.

Google voice also doesn't support MMS, and I have clients who try to send me pictures and then get all "What happened?" when I don't respond to whatever they sent me. But whatever... there's no reason they need to be sending me pics via text anyway.

I updated an old thread about privacy using Google voice a few days ago. You might want to take a quick look.

I also use Google Voice. I also have the hangouts app so that I can text and send pictures using that account.

I have separate email addresses: 1 with fake name to use as a recovery and not linked to my personal emails and my google voice email, which is my "working" name. No google+ profile, no photos, I have everything unchecked related to privacy (can't find me via phone # or google+, no personalized ads, no saving my search history etc) I also make sure that my real/personal google info is NOT signed into the hangouts app (I have 2 non personal identities linked to that app and google voice- but you can only be signed into 1 at a time.) I also use a private browser to access that email, not the general email app that is on our phones.

By default, google wants ALL of our information across all platforms so that they can put together better profiles in order to sell us crap/ sell said profiles to others who want to sell us crap (by tracking our habits and trends). They say it's to help others find us, so we can "connect" and whatnot, but really our personal privacy is not nearly as important (by default) as them making money. So just make sure to go through all the privacy settings across all apps (voice/phone, hangouts, email, google+, web hist etc).

    I use it HEAVILY.

I've talked about it in other threads. The main issue I had was if its " linked " to your phone ( instant notifications ), the calls show in your Log.
I-Phone will accidentaly call them back ( from your real number ) if you aren't CAREFUL with your phone. Lock the keypad even when it's in your purse. My former SD got my real number that way ( it was fine and luckily no one else did ), but it could have been a worse mistake.

For heavier discretion , access it only online and don't even " link " it to your phone .

I personally like how google voice doesn't send photos. It helps me screen time wasters / extra photo hunters. I hate info requests beyond my ads ( which a very extensive ).

I might take your advice and see if I can't unlink from my phone, although I understand the only way to do that is to put another phone number in and replace it. Google doesn't like to just let you go. That aside, I once had my real number show up. Luckily it was with a regular trusted provider - she noticed the new number, otherwise I'd not have even known. I followed a thread elsewhere on Google Voice and that intermittent issue has supposedly been solved.

Nevertheless, I'm keeping my eyes open for an alternative. That said, I'd never want to go back to a separate phone again.

I like it because you can open it in a window on your laptop and type your text responses. I can type so much faster than I can text so I use this feature a lot.

^ LOL I'm doing this right now. It makes it SO much easier to "text" multiple people at once.

I *love* Google Voice so much. I've been using it for years in once capacity or another. I have never once seen an unsolicited dick pic. I also figured out a way to get two GV numbers to call my cell phone number, and I have another app (Sideline) that gives me yet another phone number. I have the app on my phone and even though Google used to send me email notifications when I would log in & out to use a different Google account's number to place calls from one number or another, it's never given me any trouble to do so.

Also I have it set up to where it doesn't send texts to my phone's text messaging inbox, and my phone asks me every time whether I want to use it to make a call, that way I keep things as separated as possible. *Plus* I have either a pin code or a password lock on my phone at all times. I'm pretty paranoid and extremely stingy about my real phone number.

I have a fake-real-name gmail account for my Google voice and use it exclusively to text customers. I also have a bogus internet-alias-from-the-early-2k-years email account set up for the recovery, just in case. No Google+ tagged with it, no search history under it, nothing. The only time I ever log into it is to text and reply to customers, or to dig up notes I have on one of them (probably one of my favorite features.)

And yeah. Considering you can find online accounts associated with your email address and/or phone number, being stingy and paranoid with both of them is a good idea. Having a fake email doesn't do much good if it's linked to local things or online places that in turn link to who you really are. Same for the phone number.

When I look back to the email addresses I created back in the day. Ha! I just think wow kids are silly. It even makes me feel weird when I see people using aol email addresses.
