Default The All About Tea Thread

So I'm brand new to tea but I think I will end up liking it once I find the perfect natural sweetener and types I like. I'm giving up coffee in favor of tea. I've taken the supplements before which I love, but I want to switch it up.

    Any tea hacks? Tips?

What are your favorite tea flavors and brands? Do you make your own?

Great thread!!!! I'm more of a coffee person but I love tea too. One of my favorites is Earl Grey tea with cream and sugar (yum!!). I also love apple tea that I had and bought in Turkey. But I tried the American version of apple tea and I didn't care for it. I also love genmaicha green tea from Japan. And chamomile tea to make me sleepy at night. I'm sure that I will add more to this thread when I remember more of the teas I enjoy drinking. Lol!

As far as tips go, after you pour in the boiling water, cover the cup and let it steep for five minutes. Uncover, remove the tea bag, and drink.

Personally, I don't use much sugar or sweetener. But, that's more of a personal preference than a health thing. I do like lemon in Earl Grey and breakfast teas. There are three kinds of breakfast teas: English, Irish and Scottish. Those are from mildest to strongest. I brought some Scottish Breakfast Tea home from my last trip to Edinburgh. Now, I can't live without it and I can't find Scottish Breakfast Tea in the states. When I run out, I'm going back to Scotland. I might have to stay. In the evening, I like a milder tea like Earl Grey or English Breakfast Tea with milk and just a tiny amount of honey.

When I have a cold, I like to make lemon tea. Basically I make it by squeezing two lemon halves into the boiling water, then I drop in the rest of the lemon. Let it steep for five minutes. Really opens up the nasal passages.

Celestial Seasonings. & Protip- steeping pitchers is more bang for your buck. I'm a lazy ass who usually does tea per cup ....but if you drink for health reasons, pitchers are the way to go.

I am a tea person as well. I have boxes upon boxes in the kitchen. All of the advice given here is good, however in my personal opinion; milk or products are not a good aditive or tea... It's just a personal thing I guess and not a judgement.

I like matcha green tea. It's weird, but really good for you. It gets expensive though. I use a milk frother tool to make sure it's mixed well. I don't sweeten anything, but I occasionally liked to put plain cream into it.

Twinnings Green Tea with jasmine is my favorite. I sweeten it with dark amber agave. If you want British tea just make sure the water is boiling hot and then poor it over a tea bag. Then cover for at least 3 mins. Sometimes I steep my tea like this then place it into the fridge. Then later after it's good and strong I make some southern style sweet tea.

I drink organic oolong tea and add a teaspoon of skim milk. Oolong increases metabolism and makes you loose weight. Oolong tea is good by itself so I don't think sweetener is necessary

My friend has a tea company and she blends her own. Her stuff is amazing and her prices are too. Check out www.thedevoteausa.com if you're interested! Every time we hang out I am reminded of how little I know about tea. We went to tea tastings together and I had no idea what was happening but it was a cool experience!

With that said, I'm gonna go have some coffee. I roast my own!

I love to drink tea in the winter time -- I actually get bummed when it starts getting hot bc I can't enjoy a nice cup while I'm watching a movie or something. I like peppermint for when I'm on my period and feeling bloated; licorice/marshmallow root for when my throat is under the weather; green tea in the mornings for when I need a caffeine boost.
Unsophisticated in the finest sense of the word.

I recommend going to a grocery store that offers bulk tea (usually next to bulk spices). Get a bunch of small baggies. When you find one you like, either get more of it from the grocery store, or buy it in bulk online (amazon).

I don't put anything in my tea, personally. But I drink it mostly for health / hydration.

I've never had tea with coconut milk, but I have had it with almond milk. I definitely prefer almond to cow milk in my tea -- almond is much more silky and, ironically, creamy. Cow milk is creamy, too, but feels diluted and watery when added to tea in comparrison.

Caffeine -- my preferred go-to tea for this is Chai, hands down. Black tea in general is also pretty good ("Chai" literally means spiced tea, with the tea in question usually being black. So essentially, "chai tea" is "spiced black tea tea") So anything like an Earl Grey, English Breakfast, etc. will help get you going in the morning. For me personally, I've found Chai generally does a better job of it for me, but ymmv.

Sick -- Lemon is a really good go-to. So is Blueberry, especially if it has things like rosehips in the tea mix. If you look on the box, it should have a list of ingredients. If my throat hurts and I'm not wanting to drink water because of it, Mint is my go-to for that. It's very soothing, and in addition to helping my throat feel better while I'm drinking it, it also helps clear the sinuses so I can breath again. Ginger is also good for settling your tummy if it's upset. According to an old wives' tale, it can also help ease menstrual pain. My periods are fairly hit and miss -- either I get through with no cramps at all or I feel like I'm being murdered, in which case I go straight for the pills -- I haven't had/given myself the opportunity to see if tea would actually do anything for me there.

Relax -- Chamomile is good if you're wanting to go to sleep. If you want to wind down a bit and enjoy some you time, my personal go to is Earl Grey with a splash of almond milk and just about murdered with honey (I'm a honey addict. It's a problem. Add your own honey to taste, but I love how the flower flavors from the honey interact with the spiced flower flavors from the tea.) If you're wanting something a little less rich, Earl Grey on its own is also a lovely tea. I generally don't add anything to my tea unless I'm in a mood to spoil myself or if I'm sick. If I'm sick, I'll generally add lemon and a tiny smidge of honey to most of my teas to help them go down and to give them a little bit more of a kick.

Focus -- Something spicey is my personal preference for this. As a result, I almost always go for Ginger or Cinnamon. Cinnamon can give me a headache if I have too much of it, though, so I usually end up binging on ginger, or adding something like Cayenne Pepper to another tea, like Apple Spice. Cayenne pepper works best, I've found, if it's mixed with something at least slightly sweet.

I feel like I know nothing reading this thread and I drink tea every day! LOL. I personally drink it raw unless I am sick and then I will add some honey and lemon to it. I like green (good for the metabolism + caffeine), peppermint (belly ache), black, raspberry black, lemon black, peppermint green, hibiscus, chamomile, earl grey, and english breakfast.

So what is the anatomy of a good cup of tea? How much coconut/almond milk? How much sweetener?? How long do I leave the tea bag in for optimal results?

Everyone has their own preferences for strength. I recommend getting a white tea cup from target (they have a variety of shapes to pick from) so you can watch the color of the water change (a good indicator of flavor intensity).

    Have fun with it!

The green tea from Costco is very good. I think it's from a Japanese company called Ito En. I have it with about half of a lemon squeezed in and it's sooo yummy!

    Herbal teas I love:
Dandelion root (has a nutty, sort of sunflower seed taste), Nettle leaf, Pau d'arco, and Sage occasionally.

Dandelion and nettle are great for overall health, helps with anemia, and dandelion help the liver detoxify. Sage is an excellent anti-inflammatory, so I drink it when I have a sore throat and it helps a lot. I get the Traditional Medicinals brand. I also like Yogi tea, but I kind of prefer having my herbal separate from time to time.

Ever since I drank tea from teavana I was like "this is some good shit right here" The higher quality the tea the better the taste.

Green or white tea are my faves plus added flavors like peach or berry just make it even more delectable.

Also put an English spin on tea and have a tea party with tea and biscuits! Yum.

I have the green tea from Costco it is good, I tried a lot in Supermarkets here but I don't care for them, even Twinnings don't have the same flavours they have in the UK its annoying. Im gonna try Teavanna soon , I have a black fruit tea I picked up from British section of supermarket its good. I drink mint tea too. I put honey in my tea.

I take dandelion and burdock root for autoimmune issues. I don't drink the tea though, just the supplements. I found that nettles didn't do much for my issues.
