Default What do you do for muscle pain/strain

After you've just worked out or had a rough night at work, and end up with sore and stiff muscles, how do you deal with it? I walked about 5 miles yesterday, which is a lot compared to what I did all winter. I already was having some leg issues and general health issues. I want to avoid meds if possible, even over the counter. I have a cold pack, but what else can I do ?

Either a hot bath with epsom salt or ice bath to quickly feel better. I have a hate love thing with ice bucket or ice bath but gooooosh, after I feel way better.
Hot bath with epsom salt still works just not as quickly in my experience. Glutamine should be added to supplement.

There's also epsom salt lotion/magnesium oil that helps immensely if baths aren't an option. I rub all those before going to bed.

Foam rolling ftw! Stretch and roll before it starts to hurt preferably. A lacrosse ball is also good for smaller areas.

And Aleve, but I try to limit how much I take.

Hot baths. I have severe back & hip issues plus neck muscles issues. The easiest thing to do is to lay in a bath.

Some people advise against doing this too much but it's the cheapest quick fix for issues

I live in LA near a lot of 24 hour, affordable Korean spas so I like to just make a quick trip to the jacuzzi and maybe a massage.

Acupuncture helps w increasing blood flow; also around my area we have Cryotherapy -- my gym actually has one inside of it; I've never tried it but I hear good things -- if you can't make your way to any of those establishments I'd go with a good ol foam roller OR sit in the sauna and rub lavender oil on the problem areas (good for inflammation and muscle pains)

Hot yoga works for me, but it probably depends on your body. I am hyper flexible so I find yoga soothing,

I have tendonitis in both my ankles and plantar facillis in my right foot. Some of what I do depending on the pain.

After a work out drink an post work out shake or smoothie with creatine powder or some baking soda. Sleep with my foot boot on or at least wear it an hour a day (stretches the bottom of your foot for the plantar facillis, i'm sure foot stretching would be good for anyone on their feet all day.) Ice the area when stiff while elevating, for me it's a sign of inflammation. Take IBProfin if having a bad day. Do foot soak at least 1x a week with Dr. Johnson's foot soap (works better than just Epsom salt for me). Soaking in green tea can help as well, anti inflammatory. I use a water bottle frozen to roll around the bottom of my foot for the plantar facillis and highly recommend it in general. Whenever i can splurge on it I get a 30min foot rub at a local massage place. Orthotics or gel shoe inserts may help too.

Roll the soles of you feel with golf balls (if the pressure suits you) or check out Melt Method balls for the hands/feet, Yamuna Foot Savers or theKnotOut.com products.

You can also use a wooden rolling pin (used to roll dough) on the calves, quads and inner thighs.

Rolling the hips/glutes is very helpful. Some people use a lacross ball. I prefer theKnotOut for glutes. Get the outer/upper areas particularly since you use those areas (glute medius/minimus and where the TFL/ITB originate) to stabilize.

Epsom salt baths, foam rollers, yoga, "regular" stretching, biofreeze, and massage.
