    Question Jury Duty Advice

What in the world do we say we do for a living when we are in a courtroom in front of a ton of strangers (or prospective clients ) and the attorney's make the inquiry during jury selection?

I was summoned for the THIRD damn time for jury duty a couple weeks ago. We all sat there in the room for a few hours (That was pretty ridiculous to have us sitting there for that long with no information about what's going on)...were to sent to a one-hour lunch break...we came back and were told that NONE OF US would be needed as jurors, because both parties and their lawyers came to some sort of agreement so that they wouldn't have to go to trial. So every single one of us were sent home with $20.

When they had us watch that video about how jury selection works, I was pretty pissed to learn that they call prospective jurors to the stand one-by-one to inquire about their jobs, etc. I did jury duty several years ago and was actually selected, and I DO NOT recall ever being singled out like that...called to the stand...and asked about my job. I wasn't in the adult industry at all during that time, but I still do not recall it being like that. I'm not sure how long they've been doing it that way, but I don't like that.

You guys know you can get out of it right? I always send the summons response in saying that since I'm self-employed and rely 100% on commission jury duty would cause me financial hardship.

But when you're able to get out of it, they still tell you "Okay, we will postpone it for a later date." Now with what I experienced a couple weeks ago (see my above post), they told every one of us that even though we weren't needed in the courtroom that day, we've still met our obligation and WILL NOT have to worry about it for three years.

Now when you get that summons in the mail, and you're able to get out of it with an excuse (I've done that before when I refused to let my son be home alone), all they do is tell you "Okay, we will postpone it to a later date." When you get out of it like that, is that "later date" gonna be a minimum of three years? Or does the postponement mean they could contact you again, say, six months later? I would hate to do the postponing thing, and then have the misfortune of getting summoned (at a later date) for, say, my son's birthday or something.

I was told that my granddad got out of jury duty once by drawing a picture of a gun, and writing the words "Make my day." LMFAO!!! He is so crazy!

^^I was never told that it was postponed, just that my request to get out of jury duty was approved.

Oddly I have always wanted to be on a jury. But I am kind of crazy and sometimes go sit in the courtroom to watch the proceedings. Clearly I should have become a lawyer.

I enjoyed it when I did it years ago. It's just annoying to keep getting summoned for it. Plus, I like being home when my son gets home from school (around 4). With jury duty, you're there from like 9:30 AM til about 5:00 PM.

But could you imagine how the jurors of the O.J. Simpson trial felt? I bet they were like "Oh, for crying out loud, can we just be done with this shit?!"

Yeah, for sure for cases that drag on forever. At my last vanilla job we actually had a jury duty top up pay so that would have been a good time to get summoned.

I don't want to get out of it because I'm like you LustyLark, it's something I've never done but wanted to.

This is exactly how I was summoned 2 years ago. I had just renewed my license 6 months before.

I just updated my voter registration so I'm guessing that triggered it here in FL

Out of curiosity...do they call people who've been arrested/incarcerated for jury duty? They're looking for folks they consider "law-abiding citizens," right? I've never been arrested, but I just wondering.

They do call them where I am from. I had a neighbor get a summons. He didn't have to do it though after he told them he had been in jail 20 years earlier.
