Default Using a counterfeit detector pen at work?

I went to the bank today to deposit my weekly earnings, and the bank teller confiscated one of my $20's and told me it was counterfeit. He gave me a form to write it off as a deduction on my taxes as it is considered a loss.

The fake bill had a stain from blue pen ink on it, so it was distinctive and I remember receiving it from this Indian guy who "paid" me to give his friend a lap dance. I'm infuriated with the whole situation. Just the idea of taking my top off and grinding on this guy who knew damn well that I was doing it for free makes me sick...

I guess there's nothing I can do at this point but consider it a lesson learned, accept the loss, be thankful it was only a $20, and move on. I went to Office Depot and bought a counterfeit detector pen to prevent this from happening again. It has UV light as well as marker so I can inspect the watermark if the fake bill was printed on actual money.

My question is, do any of you use counterfeit detector pens at work? I always receive money upfront, but whipping out my pen and inspecting the money seems like it would be a turn-off for many innocent customers, especially during lap dances (in the champagne rooms it would be more understandable)? What are your views on this?

Perhaps I am being paranoid, I've been dancing awhile and this is the first time this has ever happened, but I am just so disgusted by the nerve of some people...

I guess just try to be sneaky about it. Personally, I've had feelings from customers, like giving me a bad vibe and when they give me money I do a quick check (holding to light). Not as accurate but still somewhat helpful. I think if it's only 20$ then consider yourself lucky and move on. The pen would turn me off if I were buying dances from you.

I've never seen a dancer use a counterfeit detector pen. I could definitely see how it'd be a turn off for customers as well, to have you demonstrate that you don't trust them right after establishing enough rapport to get a dance.

Considering you've only had this happen once, I might be inclined to leave the pen at home -- or maybe keep it in your locker/purse and only use it if someone gives you a bad feeling.

You could also use it AFTER dances, so that way you're not starting the dance on a sour note. As long as you check immediately, you can still likely go back to the customer with their fake bill.

I wouldn't. Use the pen at home before you take it to the bank.

Maybe something like this? Still, unless a customer is paying in several old hundreds, I'd rather take the occasional $20 hit and be grumpy for a day or so about it than become "that girl" with the pen/weird light thing who doesn't trust anyone/her money and who's always checking to make sure it's real. It sets a bad vibe for the club as a whole, not just for your customers.

Something else to keep in mind -- just because a customer gives you a fake doesn't mean he knew about it. Maybe someone came in with some fake bills, broke a twenty/bought a drink at the bar, and then your customer came in and broke a hundred, receiving the twenty the guy broke/spent earlier. Or he got it as change from another dancer, who in turn got it from another guy, maybe even a different club or city entirely. It doesn't change the situation at all, but for me personally, if I thought someone intentionally ripped me off, I'd stew over it for days, maybe even weeks. Knowing myself, five years down the line I'd still remember it from time to time and get re-pissed all over again. All that frustration doesn't change the fact that the twenty was fake and the guy's long gone. If you see him again, you can act accordingly just in case, but also just in case, you might not want to assume the worst.

I would definitely be insulted if a girl whipped out the detector pen in front of me. There needs to be some trust. As has been suggested if that concerned then check them afterwards discretely, maybe in the dressing room.

If a fake turns up then approach the customer and tell him about it politely, "I'm sure you didn't know but one of the bills you gave me is a fake." Hopefully he'll step up and replace it and then deal with it at the bank himself. I would.

This used to happen once in a blue moon to my mom when she'd waitress. Some people do get them / pass them unknowingly.

Agreed with the others. Counterfeit money is not that common, at least not in this area. So do what the bank teller mentioned.

I knew a dancer who claimed she got scammed and was trying to sell other dancers the detector pen. I'm like wtf?!?

It sucks to know some creep intentionally got you to work for free but just be glad it was only $20 and not hundreds or thousands.

I personally would not carry or use a pen but if I had been scammed multiple times or conned out of large sums of money then I would. And even in this case I would not do it myself I'd arrange to have a third party analyze the money before the dances/time.

I work at a club in DC that a lot of treasury and secret service guys too so I doubt anyone would counterfeit there but I think it would be really hard to determine what is and what isn't with all the bad lighting most clubs have etc.

whirlerz, thank you for sharing. That little story/account of your friend at the supermarket touched me, it was epiphanous. I have more sympathy now than when I posted a few days ago. I have change my opinion on this.

Since the onus is on the person (dancer) receiving the money, according to the secret service, and since there is no recourse for her --> I don't mind her doing some quick checks in front of me, whirlerz.

Now that I think of it. I believe I current fave inspects the $100 bills I give her, but not the twenties. At first I thought she was just holding up the money to admire it & show off to the other dancers. But she was looking at it from 2+ angles & rubbing her nail on it, so surely she was inspecting the security features. But she was subtle about it. "Oh wow! Do you, like, need change?"

    1. color shifting number in lower right corner; and for $100s, the inkwell / liberty bell shifts color too; and a new 3D security ribbon near it.

    2. raised printing; fingernail test.

    3. red & blue threads

    4. color of security thread (10-orange, 20-green, 100-pink)

The thing is, most ppl will check 100's, but not 10's or 20's so much, hence them being more prone to counterfeiting?

Whirlerz, I agree. I think it also has to do with places not accepting bills larger than 20s in many cases. When I go to the grocery shopping, the cashier will use the counterfeiting pen on 20s, 50s, and 100s, but not on 10s or 5s. That might explain why the counterfeit 10s were in circulation. Given that counterfeiters are going to lengths to counterfeit 10s now, suggests to me that the anti-counterfeiting measures for 100s and 20s are working.

Fortunately many (but not all) of the anti-counterfeiting tactics that are included on the 100 dollar bill are also present on the 10 and 20 dollar bills. There anyone (dancers and customers included) can check for the presence of (1) the color shifting ink on the lower-right number, (2) feel for the raised ink, (3) look for the colored strip and see that it matches the expected color, and (4) also the general feel and thickness of the paper. The dancers handle so much cash each night what perhaps checking the bills should start to become second nature and lightning quick? I don't know the answer or solution to this other than customers shouldn't knowing pass / target counterfeit money to dancers. I feel that sometimes the dancers may be targeted and vulnerable to this.

I am not sure how many of these checks can be done in club lighting or if they will offend customers. It also slows down the club pacing to have to check bills, especially if you have to check more than a few bills each transaction. I sure hope the solution isn't to go back to "club funny money" or POS terminals.

One thing that may help is using the club as sort of a bank. Before leaving ask manager if you can turn all smaller denomination bills into larger bills.

Some ladies like leaving with say 3 hundred dollar bills vs. 15 twenty dollar bills, etc.

The manager never checked my money to make sure it was real and I trusted the money that came out their vault to be real as well. This way if a customer did pass you fake money, you exchanged it with the manager so now the club has it and they could claim the loss and well as work to figure out a better solution if it happens often.

Surprisingly I had several moments when I made atm deposits where I wondered if I could have possibly been given fake money by shady customers - luckily that never happened and the worst I've had is bills ripped in half being taped together or weird sh*t written on the bills and I'm like what the fk is this?!?

Sorry you got stuck with the bad $20. How do you know he knew it was counterfeit? Not sticking up for the creep just saying. If he did know there had to been others. If he had one he had a pocketful of them. Did you ask around? Hard to imagine one guy telling his buddy "hey! Watch me pawn this phony 20 off on this dancer." If you are trying to move counterfeit notes it would seem the last place you would want to pass one is at a strip club. Dangerous work if you got caught passing bad paper in certain clubs. Certain groups would not take kindly to that. If you know what I mean.

So, I went out and bought the pen. I haven't been using it to verify 20s given to me for lap dances, because like others have said, it's not worth putting a bad taste in the customer's mouth especially when he could potentially buy multiple dances or even a VIP. When I get paid in cash for champagne rooms, I check the bills when I go back to the dressing room to put the money in my locker before starting the session. I haven't encountered another counterfeit *knocks on wood* so I haven't had to deal with the awkwardness of approaching a customer with a fake bill.

As for whether or not the customer who gave me the counterfeit bill knew, I have no idea but I hope it was an honest mistake and not someone purposely trying to con me. On the other hand, I think the strip club would be an ideal place to pass a counterfeit, especially considering how many grocery stores are upping their security measures. The lighting in strip clubs is dark, and how many dancers go out of their way to verify the legitimacy of the money they receive?
