The way I see it, it's more about the guys than it is girls. The trepidation you feel about taking his word that he's on birth control is more or less the norm for guys who need to take us at our word. Though, if you can't trust someone to be honest with you about something like that, you probably really shouldn't be sleeping with them without a condom, but your life is your life.
In any case, I see this as more a chance for guys to take control of their fertility into their own hands. Condoms are still important because they prevent disease, but plenty of girls take birth control in addition to using condoms. In addition to regulating hormones for the ladies, it also provides a nice double buffer of protection in case the condom breaks. Just because you're on birth control doesn't mean you sleep bare back with every guy you hook up with -- why should anything change with the introduction of male birth control? "It's fine, baby, I'm on that new birth control they got out." "Great! I'm on birth control too. And we're still using a condom, because STDs. But grats on your birth control."
If you're in a healthy, trusting monogamous relationship where your primary concern is more preventing pregnancy than disease, giving guys the option to regulate their fertility if they so choose is just adding another birth control option/method to the field. Maybe the girl doesn't want to be on birth control, but the guy doesn't mind the idea. Now instead of relying on condoms/the pull out method, they have an added layer of protection when it comes to their family planning. It's just another option.
