    Angry Fake Police Officer Scare

My mom is legally blind and she was approached my someone claiming to be a police officer. A friend said he was dressed like a police officer and had sheriff on the side of his car. He said that the alarm company sent him, then had my mom show him her ID and wrote down her information. When she called the alarm company they said that they didn't call the police. When she called the police they said that they had no record of anyone being sent. Is there any other way to check if this guy was legit? If he wasn't what can I do to keep her safe aside from moving back in with her. I'm so scared right now!

Maybe the system was updating? I really hope someone wouldn't go through the trouble of getting the uniform and car and-no offense-not even getting any money out of it.

They got all her info, that's worse than getting her money.

I'm pretty sure she filed a report yesterday, but I'll double check today. I'm going to get some worn men's boots and muddy them up a bit and put them outside. We already have dogs that bark. Is there anything else that she might be able to do to deter an attacker?

I'm not so sure the main worry should be an attacker but someone stealing her identity.

    Be viligant with safety.
Call the police constantly to make sure they are pursuing this. Ask around to see if they have done this to other people.

It is a FELONY to impersonate a police officer. Every officer by law have to provide a badge number. Just like you can't impersonate a lawyer, you have to provide your bar number when asked for it too.

Alert all the neighbors so they will keep an eye out & call the police if they see anything suspicious.

Then call the news media, put the story out there. Then the police will have no choice but to investigate. Take your web cam, put it up in the front window to record any car that passes by, start keeping tab of which you see on a regular bases that don't belong to the neighbors.

By actively pursuing this you make her a less likely target. A rapist love blind victims, hard to give a description. Keep in mind most rape cases never get to court or leads to arrest. Rape kits sit in storage rooms for decades.

Always take your phone & record anyone who acts sketchy. Be seen actively watching out & asking the neighbors questions. He is watching, he will get nervous and perhaps ya'll can be the ones who lead to an arrest of a very bad guy.

This is the perfect. Might also scare the perp when you get media attention too.

I saw on reddit that burglars are pulling this scam by claiming to be workers from CenturyLink (a telecom co. in the MPLS area.)

Can you have a relative move in with her for a while? I hope you live in a Castle Doctrine state.

Yep I am in one of these states! I wish I could, but she isn't taking this seriously. I keep harassing her to file a report because even if it was an actual officer, no harm no foul. If it wasn't a real officer, it is better to be safe than sorry and the police will know about it.

I did talk to some neighbors and after meeting and talking to them, they said they would keep an eye out and if my mom ever needs anything she is welcome to come over. Now she's even more pissed at me, but I appreciate the peace of mind.

I think it might be a good idea to go to the police station and discuss this in person with an officer, rather than just making a call. Hopefully this person was legitimate, but I'm not sure why he would ask your mom for id. If he's not legitimate, hopefully there's nothing he can do with the information he has. A police officer may be able to give you the best advice for this situation.

I confirmed with her that that was what she gave him. That's a good idea. I didn't think of that. Thank you!

If she showed him her ID card then he saw her address and probably wrote that down too? This sounds super shady and if someone goes so far as to buy a uniform and alter their car then it's probably a bigger scheme. Criminals do take advantage of disabled and elderly people. If she's blind he could be planning on coming back to rob her or something. Maybe if she was with a friend he figured he couldn't do it then and would come back. I would also go to the cops in person and report this. They should care if someone is going around town impersonating them (like someone said that is a felony!).

Normally I don't jump to conclusions but this does sound really sketchy!
