Default To tan or not to tan.....?!

Following on from how long it takes to get ready..

I have used various fake tans myself but I can't get all of my body reliably and have no assistant sadly the budget won't stretch.

Spray tans I've had never seem to last and look horrible after a while just wondering what people use or if they even bother? Celebrities always look brown all the time so I guess it can be done or is there a product im missing?

In the UK normal tanning is pretty impossible where I live anyway so maybe il just stay pasty and 'interesting looking' as I heard someone call it!!

I have noticed a lot of models do tan and I know that I look better with colour but maybe I'm too lazy

You're probably getting the cheaper spray tan? The ones with a few dollars added on are slightly different in the scientific sense, last longer, and are actually brown and lightly fragranced, not orange and smelly.

When i use self tanner i always use Fake Bake, its so natural in colour and lasts compared to others i have tried. The trick is to start with baby soft skin, and i mean baby soft! So start of with a really skin softening bath (i love the Elemis bath milks) and have a really good soak then after the bath i use a physical exfoliator then one of those japanese loofah cloth things, sorry i have forgotton what they are called. Then rinse off with warm water and then a really hydrating and mositurising body lotion or the Fake Bake smoothie oil which is fab. Use the lotion/oil daily after each bath or shower and do this no more then twice a week for a couple of weeks.

Once skin has become truly baby soft its then time to tan. I prefer lotions but its up to you what you chose. Then to apply use the tights vinal gloves you can, they should feel like skin tight. Then alowly buff in circular motions working from feet up to the face then arms and hands. Really gently go over knees and elbows and hands. Do the feet using any access from the lower legs working from the top of the foot down to toes and with hands i always put a little blob on a cotton pad and work from wrist to fingers and just make sure you do the inside of the fingers. Remember for the tan to look natural it should look darker nearer ankles and wrists and lighter at toes and fingers.

Only do you hands once you have done everything else! To do the back just put your arm behind you so that its the back of your hand doing the buffing. The left hand should be doing the right of your back and vice versa unless your really bendy! Then reach over the top to do your shoulders so right hand right shoulder and again vice versa. This also may sound silly but wash straight before you tan and o find using something like origins shower gel fine and it doesnt change the colour of the tan unlike other washes(watch out for dove its a big offender for causing the tan not to develop!) Then wander round the house naked for as long as possible before getting into bed, then sleep incredibly still haha. Also i have found over the years the amount of people that tan then go sleep in the same linen for a while longer before changing the sheets, just yuck so i always tan the night before i change my linen so do it a saturdsy to change ready for fresh lonen on a sunday! I use tan because else I blind people with my whiteness! I also blind the cam itself with my white skin hahaha.
When I tan the muscles look more defined which I like, also it huides bruised and skinrashes (my skin gets red very very easily, even from sitting down)

I use St Tropez Dark range mousse
Its highly addictive and also a higher priced brand, so know what you are getting youreself into

It depends on your skintype on what routine to go (for dry skin you have to take other prcautions than with normal or oily)
Malika has been writing out such an helpful piece! <3
But I do have a very oily skin, which makes it even harder to faketan because it doesnt take that well
Because of that I cannot use showrrgel or any type of oily product before getting the fake tan on; it doesnt have any effect if I do so
It also stays for 2 days tops, and than I have to do it all over again

Always use gloves and mitt to prevend orange hands!
Use bodylotion on your knees, feet and ellbows (for me th inner part of my upperlegs, my armpits and neck too) ... everwhere where it gets to tanned because of dry skin you should apply bodylotion the next time to prevend it from turning orange

PS there are many vids on youtube which shows you how to apply the fake tan
just wantyed to mention how to do it for oily skin, bec I watched a lot of youtube movies before tanning myself but when I took there suggestiuons it didnt work (because of the lotion before applying the fake tan itself)

What about the body lotions with a bit of self tan so it gradually builds up? Xx

Any spray tans or creams I have ever has (sienna, fake bake etc etc) only last 4 days max. I'm not giving myself cancer on the sunbeds and I hate self application so I've basically given up on tanning except for special occasions x

Every time I've gotten spray tanned, I look like I was rolling around in dirt. Doesn't matter if it was expensive. I guess my skin is blotchy. I prefer tanning beds.

No tanning here! I don't want wrinkles or skin cancer and I can't apply the fake stuff properly. Also though as a redhead with freckles I think pale skin looks better on me. I wish I'd thought that when I was younger because I have significant Sun damage and had to have some growths cut off of my face.

I get spray tans every 10 days or so in the summer. If you find a good salon it will last longer and fade away better than any tanning lotion.

Look up Yelp reviews for airbrush tans (the kind where someone is spraying you) and see if anyone has good reviews. The self-service tanning booths look too orange to me, but lots of people love them. Some of the airbrush tans are even too orange or dark on me because I am basically white as a sheet naturally. I got lucky and found an airbrush place that uses a different formula that's more brown than orange. It is pricey though.

The trick is to scrub yourself down like crazy before you go (I use really rough scrubbing mitts), then avoid any exfoliation until you're ready to take it off or prep for your next tan.

Thanks all! Ive got the moisturising lotion ones but it only lasts a couple of days then the build up is a mess and you have to scrub it and start over.

I'm white as a sheet too but maybe I'm just going to have to live with it I'm not very patient at applying these things maybe try a salon. I had a st tropes professionally done before and it did look fab but lasted 7 days max

I use professional spray tan solution for my tans at home. Norvell is what I use. You can either just wipe it on with a mitt twice or use a spray gun with it. I found a spray gun with very minimal over spray for just $130 on Amazon and was definitely worth the small investment. Will use it for anything other than my back. My back I use some solution on a mitt to go over it.

You are right that spray tans do not last for long though. Every 5 days, I scrub it all off and start all over. You can't apply more on top of the patchy stuff because that just makes it look even more uneven lol. But for those 5 days, I do not have to reapply, providing that I am moisturizing everyday and not soaking myself in water.

It can be a lot of work, but it all comes down to personal preference and if you feel it is worth it.

I don't have anything to add to this conversation, except... if you're like me and can't reach your back, try taking a cheap, plastic back scrubber (or even a wooden kitchen spoon) and put the mitt over it, then secure it with a hair tie, and go to town! Works like a charm every time! Also (and this may or may not work for you), if you hate using a mitt, just wear gloves and use a cheap dish sponge (like pic related). I personally find that I have better grip this way than fussing with a loose mitt, and get better results. But if you do get tanner on your hands, try using Windex or window cleaner to fade the tan. As long as it hasn't developed too much, it should work (just make sure you wash your hands after; that, or avoid eye/mouth contact).

Ive had some brands where it get patchy
but st tropez on my skin doesnt get patchy (at least not quick) and you can go over it again without getting patchy and having to much build up (at least with my skin it is no problem)
Thats why I am stuck with this brand.. its exspnesive though, but for me worth it

I use saint Tropez which is one of the biggest recommended ones and although it's a bigger pain and tales longer I use the dry oil now. I use the mitt to apply it and FOR THE BACK I use one of the bath brushe's on a stick you can but for exfoliating. I put the mitt over the brush, and use it for the hard to reach.

    I apply it weekly.

Bumping this because at the moment I can't decide if I want to start using self tan or not. I'm Scottish so I'm naturally very pale which I don't mind, but I am also anemic, which makes me look see through and not very healthy. I do think I look better with a tan, but not a dark one so I was thinking of trying gradual tan so I can have a bit more control over how dark I want to go (Just so it looks like I actually go outside from time to time lol.) The issue is that I find maintaining a tan extremely tedious! Do any of you use the gradual ones? If so, what is your routine like? X

I have got st tropez and skinny tan now so I have a spray tan every couple of weeks, exfoliate after 4 or 5 days, apply the self tan and keep it topped up like that. It's building gradually (come on a bit since my above post lol) x

Another issue is I work out a lot so I do sweat and I'm worried about the underarms being pale while the rest of me is darker if you catch my drift? Lol. I was thinking of just using the gradual tan and then wash off stuff to cover any random lighter patches and that's it. I reckon I'll pick up the St Tropez Gradual Lotion and Rimmel Sun Shimmer Fair Matte wash off tan tomorrow.

Can I ask what exfoliator it is you use? I use The Superdrug Vitamin E one, but it has oils in it which I gather isn't great to maintain a tan with. I have sensitive skin so i cant use anything too rough or filled with chemicals either. X

I used to use self-tanners, but stopped when I got back into sex work recently. I'm white as can be, but my money doesn't change at all with/without a tan. Some customers LOVE the pale look. So I'd say, try it out for a while and see how it goes. Anyway, I don't think scrubbing your skin, applying a bunch of unnecessary stuff to it, and repeating the process every week is all that healthy.

Try Loving Tan ... they have a 2 hr express lotion, and a little back stretch handle thing to get the hard spots ... it's great in a time crunch and the color is good

I use Fake Bake sunless tanning. I put it on before I go to sleep and wake up with a nice brown colored tan. I do it twice a week to keep the color up. I like that it dries really fast and doesnt stain clothing or sheets.

Yes, I love Fake Bake too! I'm extremely pale (Irish and German heritage) and I end up looking washed out if I don't use a tanner. Basically, I do the same, use the tanner at night and let it soak in. By morning, it's a pretty decent brown glow with no orange tones.

I use siennasol 20% dha, you can get it from Amazon. I've tried a lot of tans, most go patchy, or take many applications to achieve a nice brown colour that looks like I've spent the day tanning. It's a deep colour, but not orange, and not TOO brown that it looks unnatural.

It's hands down the best tanning solution Ive used and recommend it to everyone who asks. It's 20% dha, dha is the thing that tans you, all brands are much lower than 20% dha and siennasol is the only one I've found with a high percentage. This means I apply with a tanning mit once a week, and moisturise throughout, when its faded, I'll exfoliate, and reapply the next day. With lotion, I'll apply every day or every other day to get the colour I like, but this, once a week sometimes even longer, is much less time consuming.

It doesn't streak on application, I've only ever used a tanning mit, colour is even and fades evenly if you moisturise. Pay extra attention to your hands and feet where the colour can look unnatural if not corrected. It's runny, so a little goes a long way, wet the mitt so the tanning solution sticks to the mitt and doesn't run and make a mess. It's sticky when you're drying, and for some time after, I leave it on for 4/5hrs for a deep colour, but you can wash it off after an hr. It goes on darker, so it's easy to see where you've put it, and washes off to leave a nice holiday tan. I'm very pale, and sometimes I find other tanning solutions dont tan me properly or go streaky because I'm pale, but this doesn't at all.

You can buy it in a small 100ml bottle to test it out but they sell 1+ litre also. And they do less dha, and I've tried it and also the mousse they do and neither work as good and give a nice colour like the 20%

    Hope this helps

I look healthier with some colour but I spend enough time getting ready as it is and I don't cam for many hours, so I remain pale and interesting! One of my US movie clip customers particularly likes the colour of my skin.
