Default The plastic surgeon I am going to does his own anesthesia. Is this safe?

I went to a consultation for breast augmentation and have already scheduled my surgery, but wondering if I should get a consultation with someone who has a separate person do their anesthesia.

The person I am going to does their own twilight anesthesia, as well as the surgery. I think there will be a nurse present, but no anesthesiologist. He didn't do any lab work or anything, but as far as I know, I am healthy.

Is this safe to do or would it be wiser for me to go someone who does lab work and has a separate person do the anesthesia? I have never had any sort of anesthesia done so not sure how I would react to it or if there would be any complications.

I read that twilight is safer than general anesthesia since you do not need a breathing tube and can breathe on your own, but I also read about a lady dying from a heart attack during it.

Just really nervous to go through with this.

Wow! I have never heard of any doctor administering their own anesthesia. Maybe because it is twilight anesthesia he can. I am not sure.

Did you look at his reviews? Is he a board certified plastic surgeon?

I wouldn't go through with it if I were you. I've been under twilight sedation and while I didn't feel a thing and was totally out of it, I don't know if I'd want to have a BA under twilight. Listen to your feelings.

He gets good reviews and is board certified but it still worries me that he did not do any lab work or anything or a physical even. I thought that they do this before surgery? It also worries me that he would be doing my boobs and monitoring my anesthesia at the same time. Yikes.

How old are you? I got my boobs done in my early twenties (by a very reputable doctor) and my doctor didn't have me do any lab work.

I had another cosmetic procedure done this year and I was required to have lab work done. But I think that was because it was a longer surgery and I am older...but I don't know.

I had a revision done on one of my implants under twilight and it was amazing, I wish I had had the option to do my full BAs with it. You're totally out of it and then when you wake up you're wide awake like nothing happened with no grogginess. That was just my experience though, I know people have different reactions to anesthesia.

But by all means OP listen to your gut.

I am 24. Other than mental health issues/brain fog, I am pretty sure I am healthy. But then again, I have never had any lab work done in my life and my last physical was when I was about 17, so i am not sure if there are issues that I do not know about.

Maybe I should not worry if I have not been having any symptoms that would cause me to worry in the first place.

Hi, thank you for your input.

Did your PS request you have any lab work done or a physical done before plastic surgery?

Hmmm. The first BA was so long ago I don't remember, the second one I did have to do lab work, the third one I don't believe I did.

There was a surgeon I really wanted to go to specifically because he would do the BA under twilight but he was in an area that was too difficult logistically for me, and I think that when I was researching Euro doctors I found it pretty common for them to do their BAs under twilight(don't quote me though). So the twilight aspect really doesn't bother me but the one doctor I was going back and forth with I'm pretty sure did not do the anesthesia himself so I can't comment on that.

If you haven't had a physical in 7 years, you should probably schedule one anyways...especially if you are sexually active. Call Planned Parenthood if you don't have a doctor.

When I had my labs done before my last surgery, my blood platelets came back low so I had to take a bunch of iron before surgery. Maybe ask your surgeon and explain to him that you are nervous since you haven't seen had a physical in awhile and ask him to order blood work done. I had mine done in Beverly Hills and it was only $30 so it isn't much if you have to pay for it.

I hate going under more than anything. It is so scary and I feel the effects of the anesthesia for weeks. I want to have my implants removed...I am going to try to find a doctor that does twilight.

Doesn't anesthesia make you nauseous/sick as well? I know it did my Mom when she had surgery.

^^Nausea seems to be a pretty common side effect but I've never experienced it.

See I don't have a fear of it plus I have no bad side effects.....but I hate that feeling of being between consciousness and unconsciousness when you wake up. It's one of the few things in life that gives me actual anxiety. But before I freak anyone out, my friend says that she is always in a great mood and feeling amazing when she comes out of anesthesia. Doctor Foster in Lake Tahoe was who I wanted to go to for the twilight BA, he's known for doing XXL implants and expanders though, not sure what his reconstructions are like(assuming a reconstruction is what you get when you have implants removed?).

I have been checked for STDS and HIV through the pee test and that weird swab test with saliva and been with the same person for 5 years, so I am in the clear for STD's, just have not had any blood work done.

I think I am going to go ahead and call around and see how much it would cost me to get blood work done around here though, and since Beverly Hills is pretty expensive, it should definitely not be much where I am. Just to calm the nerves.

    Thanks.

Yes, but the nausea is supposed to be less with twilight.

Right, I was referring to the anesthesia.

IDK. I have had neither GA or twilight sedation in my life yet. But I hear the nausea is much more common with GA than it is with twilight.

I actually keep reading that the nausea is a lot less with twilight sedation, if any at all. But that is not why I want it. I am just terrified of being completely put under, and twilight seems safer to me.

I called around and found a place that does CBC for cheap, so having that done soon just to calm the nerves a bit.

I still might look for a different PS that does twilight though. It still makes me nervous that he does it on his own. He is board certified and gets amazing reviews, but still better to be safe. A PS doing both the surgery and watching over the anesthesia at the same time, even if twilight, does not seem safe to me.

Yea, I believe ur doing the right thing, I remember my Mom getting. a tooth extraction, & they had an anthestisaolgist there. I know its a different procedure, but urright, it seems tricky @ best, why take chances

I requested twilight so many times and every doctor told me no respectable doctor would ever offer that for a BA since it's a such an invasive surgery. Like it's physically traumatic on the body and twilight isn't good for things like that.

If he does his own, that's even weirder and you'd need to make sure he's also a board certified anesthesiologist which is basically a separate doctoral program in itself. There are also CRNA nurses but it's basically equivalent to almost a doctorate program in terms of competition, length, and pricing. I doubt he has both, and even if he did, why would he be okay with monitoring your life AND focusing heavily on a detailed surgery at the same time?? Red flag.

Anesthesiasts are pretty pricey, when I had my tubes tied in March i had insurance that covered most of it but without it he was over two grand, so maybe that's why he doesn't want one? But i was put fully under for that. I had extensive dental surgery as a teen and was under twilight for all of those procedures and he didn't have a separate anesthesiologist for that. I dunno. I'd definitely have a serious conversation with your doctor about it. I'd want answers too.

Also wanted to add that if you have mental health issues watch yourself very closely after your surgery. Surgery and anesthesia have been known to worsen those issues. I am bipolar 1 and after my recent surgery and after many years of stability on medication I experienced the worst depressive episode I have had since 2003. Not saying it will happen to you but it is something to be aware of.

I don't like being put under amnesia due to the motion sick vomit feeling and bad reaction, 10 seconds of trying to rip out various things they tape up. They have to make sure I'm knocked out before taking me back into a surgical room.
