Default Filing as an independent contractor?

Hi ladies! Please forgive me if I sound a little slow LOL but I haven't done much research before coming here, don't quite know what to look for 🙁 & just need some advice from ladies in the business (& I unfortunately don't know many in real life lol). So I'll be obtaining a license in the beauty industry soon & want to dive straight into (legit) entrepreneurship. Friends & family keep telling me I should work in a salon/spa first before venturing out on my own... & while I can definitely see the benefits in doing so, I'm just really over working for ppl (I am open to it though, depending on the opportunity.) But they also don't know that I've been doing independent fbsm for 3yrs, so I'm already accustomed to getting/keeping clients, marketing, etc etc. It'll take a little time for my vanilla client base to build, so in the meantime I was thinking of filing as an independent contractor & filing my fbsm earnings as such, so that I can rent a salon suite or studio. Any ladies here familiar at all with doing things this way & can offer any advice or tips? I know that taxes are tricky & you have to be careful. But I'd appreciate any feedback! Thanks in advance! ❤️

There's a tax pro search "Companion Tax" that specialize in ladies in the adult industry. I would suggest you consult with her about tax and business entity issues. Legalzoom is also a good place also as a lawyer will try to get you to give him a retainer. I would also suggest working in a salon at least part-time that provides paid training you can build clientele under their umbrella and constantly learn new industry techniques yourself on their dime. You could also do mobile service on your own. Learn as much as you can and try to build clientele before you take on rent and advertising/marketing expenses. It will also allow you to network with other stylist for a while. Who knows, one day they may end up working for you.

If you are renting a physical space and offering live services you need a lawyer.

Hi Marilyn, I don't know where you're filing your taxes but you can definitely find a category to file your earnings under. PM me if you want to chat about this.

In Canada, there's actually a category for dancers/entertainers (doesn't specify what type of entertainment) and that was how I filed my taxes in the past.

About entrepreneurship - it will take time to gain some real-life business experience that you can't learn by working for someone else. Everyone's business is different and so are their ways of doing their work. You would be better off trying to find a mentor. The best way to do this is to go through reputable schools in your area. I'm not sure what spa service you want to specialize in, but whatever it is you can find teachers who have been in the industry for many years. Try consulting with several until you find one or more you get along with. Also, it would be a much wiser use of your time to actually pay consultation fees to a teacher and/or see if you can arrange an apprenticeship. When you work for a salon (same goes for the restaurant industry) you will have to follow their methods even if you don't agree with them or would do things differently yourself. That's why it's better to go with consultations, private lessons, or apprenticeships. A great thing about that is if you train with someone who is well known, you can then post that on your website and marketing material. Social proof works best i.e. actual photographs of you training with the person or meeting with them. You can also travel and look at training with various people who you look up to. Another good thing to do if you're working in makeup/beauty services is to offer to assist an established artist, that way you can work on some more high-profile projects. Look up successful professionals in your area who are well-regarded for what they do, and research their advertising, customer reviews etc...

All the best in your endeavors and congratulations on starting your own entrepreneurial venture!
