    Default I think I'm a compulsive buyer

So I just ordered a dress today that's $150 and I'm not 100% sure it'll even fit right. My friend invited me to New York. Me being the brilliant person I am brought $350 worth of Broadway musical tickets BEFORE I purchased my transportation ticket. I emptied out my savings which I'm sure will be replaced before the trip but I planed to use that money for my trip and bills. Not to mention I ran up my credit card. I have no idea how I'm going to stop doing stupid stuff like this so I can budget for my dream house next year...

I've done something similar. I don't have a card linked to my savings account and its in another bank all together. I have to physically go to the bank to make a withdrawal. I do need to hide my credit card from myself. I'm afraid to cut it up.

Is there anything that you absolutely need your card for? Maybe you can cut it up and make a goal to save a certain amount of money before you get another one.

Rich bitch is a good book I've read it too.

You spend compulsively because its just you. Maybe gather a group of close trustworthy friends and help hold each other accountable.

Also why? Are you spending when you're bored? - get a hobby. Are you trying to keep up with the joneses? - ditch your superficial friends. Are you afraid of having money? - recognize and challenge your fears. Are you lacking financial education? - study personal finance.

Try not to be too hard on yourself and take steps to shop responsibly (reward yourself when you do).

The key in budgeting is not to think of the long run, but to have a good foundation and worry about each individual decision and situation one at a time as they come up. I have found I stop my compulsive buying by working more. The less free time you have, the less you spend

The way to limit access to you credit card is to place it in a freezer bag of water and put it in your freezer. In order to use it you will have to thaw it out. By the time you can use it you should have rethought the purchase. If you really need it then it will be available since all you have to do is thaw the ice to use it.

^ yeah I did that... Took me all of 5 seconds to figure out that running hot water on it would thaw it in a minute.

I agree with working more or having hobbies at home. The busier you are, the less free time you have to dick around on the Internet or at the mall.

I returned the dress. I lost out on shipping but it's a lesson learned. Cancelled my trip and got most of that money back. I'm trying to do better.

    I love being a compulsive buyer/shopper.
I once had a male therapist that told me so. Lol!
He said I shop because it makes me feel like I have some control over my life.
Maybe, but mostly because it feels great, and doesn't hurt anyone.
I still save money, so I'm fine with it.

Something that helped me is having a bunch of envelopes taped to my wall. Every time I came home from a shift, when I got done oggling my money, I'd start divvying it up accordingly. 40% into long-term savings. 10% into generic "fun." X% into "Bills" until the bills folder was paid up, then that money went into "Savings," etc. Want a new computer? New car? I made an envelope for it and designated either a flat amount or a percentage. I'm generally more a fan of percentage because it allows me to have a crappy night without needing to panic about "not having anything to show for it." Though, right now I currently put a flat $100/week into my "fun" folder and challenge myself to stick to that. Anything "fun" (going out to eat, movies, books, frivolous clothes shopping...) comes out of that folder. Once it's empty, it's empty. No more purchases until next week, when I drop another hundred in it. Getting hobbies set up at home/that I don't need to constantly dump money into has helped me not dip into it as much, to the point now where I can go several weeks without touching it.

That said, that might not be of much help to you, since the cash is all right there, and it's a little too easy to justify "I'll just take $X out of this folder now, and I'll put it back later when I make it again." I've seen some apps/alternative bank accounts out there now though that are apaprently better for managing funds for compulsive buyers. If nothing else, maybe get a couple different savings accounts with your bank, hopefully ones that make it difficult to just up and withdraw from, and designate/use those in the place of envelopes. It would mean a solid paper trail on your money, and would require faithful trips to deposit your earnings before you can spend them, but in the end, it might be worth it to keep yourself away from your money.

I work with my accountant to set up goals, so that way I just won't start spending money carelessly on clothes, shoes, and food. Something that I do is by putting a certain percentage of my money into paying off student loans, another percentage into necessary stuff (bills, insurance, groceries), another percentage into savings, and the rest I can spend. I've actually been more careful with spending after I started to actually look into my finances. If you want to, you could get the Mint app on your phone so you can get an overview of your finances.

Also getting a business checking account really helped. If it's in a bank account that I don't use regularly, I just won't touch it.

I'm going to set up a meeting with my bank to go over my finances. I over spent furniture shopping yesterday. So I need to figure out how I'm going grocery shopping for my new apartment.

It sounds like you need a mental health professional, not a banker.

Groceries aren't your only problem. Have you saved up enough rent/deposit money? Do you have enough to cover utility deposits and turn-on fees? Will you also have enough to put gas in the tank and pay your car insurance? What about child care expenses?

Also, you mentioned in another thread that your furniture is on layaway. Is it paid off already or do you still have some left to pay?

A month ago you were flat ass broke. Do you really have enough saved to do this now?

I budgeted for everything except groceries and savings for the rest of this year. I have money set aside for the deposit and rent. I have money taken directly from my account for the rest of my bills I'm already paying including insurance and child care. I've actually thought this through mostly. I just went over the budget a little while shopping. I just put it on layaway yesterday. In the other thread I also mentioned that I'm still on a waiting list. The soonest I can move will be November.
