Default Questions for those of you who had rhinoplasty...

I've always wanted a rhinoplasty since I was a child, researched a little bit and always thought I would get one in the future, but only recently did I start to research more seriously. I am travelling abroad for rhinoplasty, I really want the best surgeon for my nose, but it's a little scary. I booked consultation with different clinics for the last week of July, I still haven't booked my flight lol. I will probably book it later this week or next week so it will be a little last minute. I am not sure if I'm prepared for the surgery yet, maybe I'll just consult the doctors in person and fly back home to think about it before getting it done...

I know rhinoplasty is one of the most difficult surgery, but it seems like every surgeon even the world renowned surgeons have some horrible reviews. For my breast implants, I researched thoroughly and wanted the best, I chose the president of the plastic surgeons association in my area he had pretty much nothing negative and I am happy with my result. But for nose, it seems like there is no surgeon with perfect reviews and bad reviews for botched nose jobs are really bad.

I mean my nose is not that bad, I must be pretty attractive if I was able to make money off my looks for the last five years but it's something that always bothered me. I always want to improve myself. The more I read about botched jobs, how some patients end up disfigured I think hmmm my nose is not that ugly, but I look at before/afters of women who looked okay or pretty, but just a nose job transformed them to drop dead gorgeous and they look like celebrities afterwards...

I am also afraid of the recovery and swelling, unlike breasts I cannot hide my nose until it looks good.

For those of you who had rhinoplasty, are you happy with your result ? Do you sometimes consider revision ? I know a nose job is one of the surgeries with the highest rate of revision... What did you have done ? I am particularly curious about osteotomy and alarplasty... Did you have closed or open rhino? How was recovery ? How long did it take for swelling to go down and how long after surgery did you look presentable ?

Honestly imo, unless it is a big deal to you, I would try and stay away from rhinoplasty. I broke the shit out of my nose when I was 23 and had to have surgery. 2 reconstructions lol. But my nose wasn't near as bad broken as it is now after the Dr. Asked me if I would like to "refine my tip"... He convinced me that it would look a lot better.... The dumbest decision I ever made and regret it to this day, 9 years later. The reconstruction wasn't the problem, it was the unnecessary "tip refinement" that fucked everything up. My whole nose is a little crooked, the tip has scar tissue on one side and an indent on the other above the nostril. I also have a few lumps on the bridge but aren't noticeable for the most part. I'm not hideous or anything lol but I definitely notice a difference and feel super self conscious about it, especially in photos unless I'm at the right angle. It also messed up my profile and my nose basically sticks out too much for my liking.

My story is different but just be careful. There are plenty of good nose jobs but people make mistakes and also everyone heals differently. One little mm off of anything and your whole face can look like shit. Just doing some bump shaving or deviated septum repairing is usually pretty straight forward and can make a great difference for appearance and breathing but when it gets into reshaping or refining or cutting away material, one little snip too far and its over. If it ain't broke don't fix it lol! Even then... If it is something you really want to do and can live with any potential problems then just make sure you go to the best place you can. I've been looking at rhinoplasty revision specialists but can't afford it yet.. Not to mention the recovery for my first one was horrendous! I couldn't even look down for 6 months without feeling like my nose was going to explode. The second time wasn't too bad. My ear hurt more where they took cartiledge. Seriously make sure its what you want. Like I said, I probably make mine sound worse than it is and everyone else says its fine. I'm the one that has to look in the mirror everyday, not everyone else. If I could take it back I would. I had to have the rest construction regardless, I even cracked my eye socket and pushed my nose back off my cheek right after i initially broke it lol, but agreeing to the "tip refinement" was one of the biggest mistakes of my life. I'm a army veteran so this was done through the VA hospital but the guy doing it was supposed to be a really good surgeon in my area and was just contracted with the VA. No amount of good reviews saved my face...

Especially in this industry, I would be cautious of doing anything to your face unless it's something that you just have to do or would not have permanent consequences.

As far as recovery, it really depends on what they are doing and how well you respond and recover. I had to wait a year between surgeries to make sure all the swelling and any changes were done. It can take a while and our noses can change overtime a little too.

I had a great rhinoplasty experience, but honestly, my nose was godawful to begin with and anything would be an improvement. I'm still not 100% happy with it -- not sure how many people really are, if they're honest -- but it was overall a positive change. Mine was an open rhinoplasty, I think, and the recovery took about 2 weeks for most of the bruising to go away.

There are plenty of doctors with a lot of experience and positive reviews. Makemeheal.com has lots of pictures from patients, so that's a good resource. But it's definitely risky, no matter who you end up going to. There is a health risk and also the risk of not liking the result.

    Best of luck! <3

Off topic but you sound like you would be a good candidate for those 'non surgical nose jobs' where they just use filler. They could even out the bumps and fill in the indent.

Never heard of that. I'll look into it, thanks for the info! I've been putting off doing anything about it but I have an appt with ENT on Wednesday.

Fillers are very bad for health ... http://www.deantoriumi.com/issue1-1.asp

An augmentation might be better... I've been in Korea for a week and met a girl who's had her primary with Dr Paul Nassif, he shaved off too much so she's been using fillers for 10 years and it's caused her breathing problems... She got donor rib cartilage to augment her bridge.

Maybe the doctor could use ear cartilage graft for the nostril dent?

I decided not to get it done this summer. I don't feel ready yet...

I know someone who just got a nose job by Dr Nassif and it looks amazing. I have seen some of Dr C alvert's nose jobs, too and they are phenomenal.

My advice to you is do your research and keep in mine that it's going to be expensive. I agree with you- it is so scary to have surgery on your face. :/

Yeah when I met her I didn't understand why she would want a revision because to me her nose looked perfect already... But she thought he shaved too much of her bridge and removed too much nostril, but it didn't look bad at all her nose looked fantastic. But she said the reason it looks this way is because she's been doing permanent fillers for 10 years to add height to what he removed and she wasn't happy. She regrets not doing more research and going with him because he was so famous she did not consult another doctor. Aesthetically her nose looked amazing but she said she needed a revision because he killed her breathing (she's caucasian).

I saw Dr Calvert website too... Unfortunately I don't think he has much experience with asian noses...

I would much prefer having my rhino with a Canadian or US doctor as I would feel safer but it seem they don't have much experience with asian noses at all... Some of them have before after pictures of asians but either there is no difference at all or I don't like how it looks... Everyone says in Korea they're the best for asian noses but even after meeting 8 doctors I wasn't able to find one I trust... It's very different from here, the doctors are so busy and do so many surgeries per day the consultations are so brief, no photo simulation and it's very difficult to verify doctors credentials...it's really difficult to find reviews online besides PurseForum but the clinics know that's the only place English speakers can go find information and unfortunately there's so many promoters and fake reviews... The plastic surgery industry is not regulated like in Western countries - lot of unlicensed surgeons, Korean law protect the doctors because medical tourism is such an important source of income for them, there's one famous surgeon who killed and botched many patients before opening up a new clinic to cover it up and he's still practicing, racking in millions... The website of the Korean Association of Plastic Surgeons don't even work so the clinics can write whatever they want on their website... I just did not feel safe in case anything goes wrong although I know people who had fantastic results... Sigh.

They have so many great rhino surgeons for caucasian patients in the States lol

Yeah I did some research of fillers after reading this and was immediately turned off lol. I most likely won't even get another revision, it isn't worth it if it got worse! I would probably never let myself live it down. Unless medically necessary or really really wanting it, be careful of what you do, especially to the face.

I know nothing about this doctor but I found this http://www.donyoomd.com/services-asian-rhinoplasty.php He has good reviews, too!

Maybe search out for other Asian American doctors and see if they have experience with Asian rhinoplasties? I would think there has to be doctors in the US that specialize in this.

I know what you mean with fake reviews though. One of the top doctors on RealSelf I swear has 90% fake reviews. It is hard to know who to trust...unless you have actually seen their work on someone you know.
