Thumbs up Is dancing a "Real Job"

So my parents recently asked me if I got myself a real job yet or if I was still prancing around naked.

Its not the first time someone has told me to get a "real job". You know the ones where you work 30 hours a week for minumum wage.

I dont think I am really any good at anything else. I did three years of college and couldnt even get an interview for a "real job".

Do yourselves as dancers consider it to be a real job? Have you ever debated with someone over it?

No I would not debate because you cant talk rationally to close minded people.

A real job is anything you work and get paid. I'd respectfully tell parents to mind their business and as long as bills are paid, you never ask them for money, and you keep your business legal then they can quit hassling you.

Besides dancing is hard work! Not only that you are self employed, in most clubs, so you're actually running a business not a job. They have no clue. I bet your parents try to be strippers they'd get a huge wake up call and probably quit the same day lol!

Of course it's a real job, it takes skill and experience to get better, and the pay is good too. Unfortunately a lot of people don't consider minimum wage "real jobs" either. There's even people who don't consider anything below 100k a "real job". You can't reason with close minded people. If your parents bring it up again, tell them it gets the bills paid.

It's absolutely a real job! You work, and you get paid. People that say that, only say it because they don't agree with dancing. Plus, they are your parents... I don't know any parents that are actually happy that their daughter is dancing around naked. But you are an adult! I have learned from experience that it's better if you just don't tell your parents what you're doing. My parents knew. Then I told them I quit. I really didn't quit. They are off my case now. They think I'm a bartender.

It very much is a "real job", but people who don't agree with a certain job will say it's not a real job.

I've had "real jobs" paying min wage where I was told it wasn't a real job, because I didn't get sick days. I wouldn't even be able to stand a job like that anymore. I mean, people say the same thing about vanilla work at home jobs, as well as direct selling jobs and so on. I agree with what everyone above has said about "real jobs".

I also like Monroe's idea-tell them you waitress or bartend now maybe?

I agree with miss.a.p1600, you can't change a closed mind. That said, dancing is a real job and more. It's a real business. It can be a lucrative business. In my case, I paid for college, graduated debt free, paid for a car, and had money invested. That money I had invested turned into the down payment on a house plus gave me the financial freedom to have my kid when I wanted to. That house lead to another house and another and so on to the point I have a very nice house now with a small mortgage that will be paid in full in 2023. Treat dancing like the business that it is. It's serious and a good way to make real money. It's also a great way to learn about business and how to make it in the world of sales. Believe me, making an elevator pitch is not much different than selling a VIP.

I told my mom I quit too. I just knew she didn't accept me dancing. So now she thinks I work a normal boring 9 to 5 job like her and she's happy. Dancing is def a real job that most people don't get cuz of what they've seen in movies or heard on TV

Non dancers have no idea what our job is like. My best friend is very non judgmental and doesn't care that I'm a stripper, but every now and then I catch her assuming she knows what it's like doing my job. Like as if all we do is prance around the club in a little thong while guys throw money at us. I told her she can go try dancing for a night and then get back to me. Dancing is hard work and not everyone can do it. I wouldn't bother arguing with anyone further than what I told my friend because they just don't get it.

The only job I don't consider 'real' is pimping lol. Other than that everything is a 'real job' in my opinion.

I know of no other job where you start your day owing the house, where you have to hustle to make enough money for house, tips outs, taxi/gas, and get your money's worth for the work you do. If people only knew.....#justsayin

Look at the cash you get in your hands at the end of the night
Can you buy things with it?
Answer: Of course it's a real job. A real job makes you money, and this makes you more money than many jobs out there. It's not a LONG TERM sort of job, but it's a job nonetheless.

It's more than a job, it's a business . You're responsible for marketing yourself, promoting yourself, making sales, investing in your business, gaining & maintaining clients... Amongst many other things this business entails . It's better than working to make someone else rich while you're just getting by . Granted, your parents have the right to feel the way they do; however, if you make decisions to better yourself & your future - own house, car, pay bills, invest your money, pay off college & pursue anything you desire in life, I think they will be proud of you... proud of all you accomplished in life .... BUT there is always telling them you quit & got another job although you hadn't lol . It's easy & may put their worried minds at ease .

Of course it is! Just because it's not a demeaning soul sucking 9-5 working to make some rich white guy even richer (yeah, cuz that's real empowering work ) doesn't mean it's not real.
My regular said that to me the other day. Ha! "So all the thousands you been giving me for the past four years is fake? Really? Cuz I been paying my rent and feeding my kid w it "

This kind of stuff is why I was always closeted. I worked my guts out dancing and making my $$ goals . I didn't have extra energy left to defend my choice to do it to people !
If it were me, I'd " phase in " to another line of work ( minimal hours ) and tell people that's what you do and just dance dance dance without judgement or hassles.
99% of the people you'll meet have no club how hard dancing is or how much skill / time is takes to do it well.

I've accepted the fact that most people don't consider dancing a real job. I really don't care either. It's a very real job to me and the salary I earn from it is very, very real indeed! ;-)
