Because she was raised to be a champion and this is how every child should be raised, imo. I liked how her father defended her in front of that interviewer (I am not from US so, I am sure the racism problem is deep there, especially in 1995, but I believe he would have been as jerk with any kind of child who was being this confident, at that age and in those years- I've personally seen it in my country, here in Eastern Europe, in the 90's adults being mean with confident kids, taking it as a sign of a bad raising and behaviour. Knowing the problems in US, that interviewer made me as twice as disgusted). No wonder she is as confident. I wish I was this confident, as she is. But that confidence came from hard work, from the certainty that NOBODY plays like the Williams sisters, from a protective father and probably lots of dirt from media thrown at them, which made them even stronger.
They are the perfect example of what means to not let yourself being put down by anyone's mouth, but take the shit thrown at you and make it an armor.
Unfortunately, kids nowadays are being raised that they are good no matter how mediocre they are, actually. Everyone deserves a medal, competitions are being put down, working hard and being proud and confident with your results is being seen as rude, so those who are actually good at what they do, must keep their head down and stay humble, to not bother the insecurities of those who can't.
I see this in our industry as well, as less succesful creators/models are constantly harrasing top models and accusing them of bragging/ money hoarding, when they have all the right to live in luxury and enjoy their hard earned status. AVNStars is an example of company who's kissing the ass of the mediocres. They took down the contests (because there were same models wining, like theese models didn't work for YEARS to bring their audience on AVNStars and spend on them- probably there were more who complained about it), they took down the ranking, you can only see your rank privately, so you don't kill the confidence of other less sucessful creators, lol.
I wish everyone who's really good at what they do, be like Venus Williams.
