Default What do I tell customs at airport what I do for a job?

    Hi everyone

im flying for the first time alone tomorrow international and im not exactly sure what to say when im going through customs and they ask me what I do for a job

I cam fulltime, and I would obviously say to customs "im self employed/freelance" but I dont know what to say when they ask specifically like "self employed doing what?"....

    Any advice would be great!

I'm confused. Why would customs ask what you do for a living?
*I haven't flown international in like 100 yrs, so don't know the protocol.

I was asked that on a regular flight.
Bag Check got me pulled to the side.
I didnt experience any real shitty looks for saying I am a camgirl. They were kinda uncomfy and giggled. Out of confusion they asked what that was so I explained.

computer, webcam, toys, passport, and one bag. I looked suspicious
I always travel light and with all above unless Im in my car.
I was let go and they put me another flight since I had missed mine.

There was seriously no issue and very fun to see their looks of uncomfyness the same look I had when being taken to the room

I think the reason they ask is two fold. One is because they want to know that your gonna go home! So they like to hear that you are gainfully employed and not coming to their country to stay illegally. The other reason is to see how quickly and confident you are in your answers. They are checking for lies or if you hiding something. For this reason I always say I work in internet design and optimization. Its not a lie and often I fly to America. I dont want to mention anything even remotely porny going into USA or they might deny you access because of the large number of girls working in the sex industry illegally. This is less of a problem with other countries.

Don't know exactly what to say but there was this blog post from a camgirl on mfc a true horror story of what happened to her at customs - is the only reason am saying this because is like - u can't go around flashing your dildoes at airports and expect it to be normal that might think u r into prostitution and there could be misunderstandings...

I freelance with multimedia and marketing. If they ask what is multimedia, I make webvideos and images.

Sales and marketing. Don't tell them you're self employed, freelance, work from home, as they can assume you can 'work from anywhere' and will assume you'll be working illegally in their country. You could get chucked for up to 5-10 years.

I don't think I've ever been asked that question. If they did ask, it's very unlikely that they will bother to check it.

Their main concern will be that you have the funds to support yourself during your stay and that you have somewhere to stay, so take evidence of those things if possible.

I say "web content creation". Make sure you always buy a return ticket when you fly internationally, and ALWAYS have the proper visa for what you intend to do in that country.

Not every customs officier will ask what you do for a living. If they do your self employed or a student they just want to get an idea that you have ties to coming back home.

I just came back from a trip. I am a student until I look to old to be one.

If you are going with self employed go with sales or consultant for a car dealership.

Sales, marketing, writer, something its not that hard to pick something.

I am based in Canada and I see overseas visitors being subject to questions at Customs each time I fly back into the country (and I imagine many countries are similar). The reason for this includes:
    - Authorities want to determine that you are just visiting and will indeed be leaving the country after your designated stay.
    - That you will not be conducting illegal activities while you are in the country.
    - You have sufficient funds for your stay.

Having a return or outbound ticket is always a good idea. Be careful with carrying business cards or CVs/Resumes (I got the third degree when I visited Australia many years ago as they thought I was going to try to stay and get a job).
Marketing is always a good 'job' to give. It's not lying and it's legitimate.

I am going to apply my visa K1 to marry with my fiance in the states and to live with him. Do you think is a problem to say I work on cam stuff? Itīs not illegal because I want to enter legal with the correct visa. So I will be able to work there too. But not sure if this is a problem. In my country this is a legal job and I am almost 22 years old.

Yes, they didnīt allow me to enter into USA. Because they said I had intentions to remind there working illegal on cam and also not enough money to live there. So when I donīt have enough money my intentions are to work there. That they said.

You can't work in a country that you're not legally allowed to work in...doesn't have anything to do with webcamming as far as USA laws.

If I am understanding you correctly daphneapollo, you need to apply for your citizenship to the usa, and then apply for a working permit....then you can work online webcamming. your fiancee or partner also needs to prove that they have enough money to support you and themself above the poverty level.

People do not misguide each other. you will not get a citizenship at any country right the way. First you have to become a resident, resident can work.

yeah thats what i said....you have to apply for citizenship first. and then if you have been married for 2 years or more, you should be able to get a working permit while waiting for your citizenship. you can still apply for the working permit even if not married for 2 years, but it will be harder. this is taken straight from the .gov website. im not misguiding anyone...this has to do with my current life situation so i thought i would offer some help

i had to get a lawyer when applying for citizenship in the EU..i tried for one year without one and it was a waste of time. if you dont have a lawyer, and you have some $$ to get one...get one! they will help out so much and you wont have to worry or guess about anything
