Duh Do I really have to tell my roommates where I work?

Hi guys. I'm 27 years old, an experienced dancer and just moved to a really expensive city for graduate school so I had to get a place with a couple roommates. They are both girls, 23 and 24, working professionals. They seem pretty nice but like to be all up in your business. Both are sort of religious, but one is super cool and down and respectful who has her own thing going on, while the other one is kind of pushy and seems really judgmental about pot and never goes out anywhere with her own friends (ugh really?).

Basically, I am going to audition at an upscale club in town tonight, and don't really want to tell them what I do. All my past roommates have known, but I've been the primary tenant and they have been SUPER laid back actual friends of mine. Never been a problem before, but since I'll be here for grad school (and renting a curtained-off living room, no lock!) I really don't want to have someone turning into a hostile jerk while I'm trying to do my thing at school.

I have said I might look for waitressing jobs or barbacking jobs (cue the "OMG WE WILL COME SEE YOU AT WORK ALL THE TIME"), and tried to look for exclusive country club bars open late but can't find any open past 10 that I could use as a cover story.

What do I do? Just come clean and get a safe? Just refuse to say anything? Come up with a story?

I don't want to completely alienate either of them but I also don't want to encourage too much prying. I need my damn space.

No, don't tell them until much later if you choose to. It's a hassle.
College students regularly go out during club hours so just say you are out with friends or at your cover job....

Catering gigs or promotions gigs? Good way to explain having is hours and not being able to have friends visit.

Maybe "get" an online gig that you can do anywhere with internet, so you just go to different "coffee shops/bookstores/bars/wherever" on a given day to get work done, since it/the background noise/environment "helps you focus better." Only really works well if you have a laptop and a base knowledge of such a job.

For me, I have curriculum development as a legit gig that I do every now and then. I also have a few sample courses available for sale that I've completed, so if people ever get super snoopy and go a-googling, I have results already primed to pop up next to my name. It's also something that sounds hard to do (because it is) but once you get the hang of it, it's easy to cranks projects out a lot faster. Like, your first course or two might take close to a year if you come in with no prior first hand experience, maybe a little less if you have some training. Once you get it down, though, it's possible to crank out a new piece of quality work every month. Not many people know the job exists, though, and even fewer know what's "normal" for it, which means no one questions it when I work on the same course for 3+ months with minimal progress made. I also keep my finances to myself and make regular deposits in the bank so I don't have stacks of cash laying around. I keep some cash on hand for off hand purchases/tips at restaurants, but that's it.

For you, you don't actually need to get another job. Just do enough research into something that you can talk about it if it comes up. Transcribing might be an option, or maybe a secretary gig for an online based company (basically the same thing as a secretary, but you work from home/anywhere you have internet and cell service).

Tell you are a waitress/bartender part-time. Say about some club in the middle of nowhere. And don't talk too much about it. Also you can tell that you are night -time babysitter in upscale families. You don't have to talk to your roommates too much anyway. It's not their business

I found a catering company that hires out waitresses, bartenders and servers for private events in my city. I tell people I work there because they can't come visit me at a private event and it also explains why my hours change so much and I can take off days whenever I want (because its like a temp job and you can sign up to work at whatever events you want).

Keep your heels in your locker at the club and keep your dancer bag as small as possible as to not raise suspicion about why you carry a duffle bag to work. OR tell them you go to a 24 hour gym after work and thats why you always carry a big bag with you to work.
Do your future self a favor and work hard now.

If you're in a curtained off room, check Walmart or target for a small foot-locker you can keep under your bed/at the foot of your bed, you can keep all your dancewear/other important things (like cash, your SS card, etc) in. I agree with the other posters here, claim you got a flexible catering gig where you sign up for shifts, that way you can say "oh, I'm working a wedding/event". Another idea is claiming you work overnights in a call center (customer service for a bank or ISP), so they can't come visit you there either.

I don't see any options for you other than finding another place.

    1) Tell them and you a screwed, they'll probably think your going to be bringing men over and partying with drugs etc.
    2) Don't tell them and they'll find out.

I usually tell people I work in promotions, and make it sound as boring as possible.

I wouldn't tell those nosey broad a [email protected] thing. Well I would but it wouldn't be the truth lol!!! Most people can't handle the truth.

I knew a woman who lived in the next town over and would commute an hour to work. Maybe say you work in another town about an hour away. Nobody in their right mind is going to drive that far unless they're really thirsty. Idk. They sound kinda thirsty and nosey.

But most likely they're not going to come up to your work - just tell them no. Your boss won't allow it.

the babysitter one is genius!!! or move out, honestly. I know this is probably unsolicited advice, but the living situation sounds rather un-relaxing.

honestly i would just tell them. at first my friend and i didn't tell our housemates but in the end it was just easier to tell the truth. but where i live no one cares so idk what it's like in your area.

otherwise say you work for a hospitality agency. that's what i tell my parents. that way you're always going somewhere new and you don't really know where you're going until the last minute so it's a valid reason to be vague.

When people really keep on me asking what I do I tell them I'm a waitress for a catering company. They can't come visit and it explains my random hours.

I didn't realize someone else said the same thing! It works!

You are 27 and don't need to answer to anyone. I lived with roommates twice while dancing and none of them ever cared or said anything to me but I owned that shit. I eventually moved out both times because; quite frankly I like living alone. If you have to come up with a cover I guess other girls here offered you good advice but I feel like your question comes from a place where you are a bit "ashamed" or maybe apprehensive is a better word because you think they are religious and judgemental. You should not feel like you need to bend to someone who is flawed to make them more comfortable.

    Hahaha They are thoughhhhh

Alright, thanks to everyone for the responses. I love the catering gigs idea. I've told them I might get an in at a company from a friend of mine, and have just been really vague, and busy, and gone "out" a lot. I think they're starting to get the picture that I'm not trying to be besties with some little girls. Just friendly!

Cannot afford a place of my own yet unless I want a 2hour commute

First off, I'm in the same curtained off living room area for now bc it's all I can afford & I'm a cam girl, so if I'm able to cam from "my room" with no one bothering me or finding out then you should be fine. I live with 3 other people also, ya it's not the best living situation for now but it's a roof over my head until I can move onto better things. I just told my current roommates that I was a marketing research consultant & worked from home alot. They still don't have a clue & I cam while they're here even LoL minus the moaning & have to word my hustle a bit differently sometimes lol. Even when I danced, I didn't tell anyone anything, it's none of anyone's business really.
