Default Racism in sex work Questionare

Hi, I'm doing some research on racism in sex work, particularly the experiences of brown/black dancers/escorts/cam girls. I'm a dancer myself, but I'm white. Here are my questions. Feel free to answer as much or as little as you like. If you don't feel comfortable posting about it, feel free to message me instead.

1)Have you felt racism/discrimination by other dancers?

2)Have you felt racism/discrimination by customers?

3)Has the racism you experience differed by club/location?

4)Are white dancers treated differently? How?

5)Do you think racism or sexism has at all impacted your decision to get into sex work? How?

6)Have you struggled to find work elsewhere?

7)Is there a difference in black/brown patrons treat black/brown women compared to white dancers?

8 )how do things like racism and sexism effect your life?

9)what are some things we could do to minimize racism in sex work?

10)what do you consider your race to be?

Yeah. It's racists. I didn't face it but like less than 3% of the time cause I ignore racists and I have a slight advantage (pretty, mixed race, young, highly educated, worked in mixed club, etc) but I think the way to minimize it is to not sit back on a throne of privilege and allow it to happen to others or associate with ignorant hateful racist people and I refuse to work at clubs with "quotas" that lack diversity.

White girls are not inherently or biologically more attractive, in fact we age a lot worse than darker woc for the most part it's purely societal and on the part of the hiring managers a lot of times rather than customers. I'm not a black girl so maybe I should not be answering, but I've worked in some crazy racist clubs so yeah even being white I've seen it but I really hope it's changing along w the ridiculous auschwitz victim thinness that's not anymore biologically attractive and just a fad nowadays.

*i am not white but not black or brown either. I am light-skinned Asian.

1)Have you felt racism/discrimination by other dancers? yes

2)Have you felt racism/discrimination by customers? yes

3)Has the racism you experience differed by club/location? Yes, sort of? i had to leave West Virginia early. Customers/ management liked me a lot, but other dancers were jealous to the point that work became unsafe for me. In NY or MD it was just sort of moderate. Sometimes special treatment, sometimes rude treatment.

4)Are white dancers treated differently? How? probably, but I wouldn't know exactly how...? Because i'll never be white. i assume that even with the biggest spenders, even the most beautiful/ amazing asian dancer would be seen as "cheaper" ("worth a little less") than someone of equal beauty/ personality who is white. But its like, white Russian dancers are considered cheaper than white European dancers, so i think you could probably dig deeper with that too...

5)Do you think racism or sexism has at all impacted your decision to get into sex work? How? Yes because I wouldn't want to work for a racist company as my vanilla job, but pretty much all stripclubs are racist, which makes me A) frustrated/ confused, and B) a hypocrite.

6)Have you struggled to find work elsewhere? sure

7)Is there a difference in black/brown patrons treat black/brown women compared to white dancers? not sure about this one

8 )how do things like racism and sexism effect your life? racism and sexism affects everyone whether they realize it or not

9)what are some things we could do to minimize racism in sex work?

you'd have to start with addressing these perceptions in the OTC "real world" first. Because customers are people who get their racial ideas from their workplace and the media, and from jokes and stories shared with family/ friends. I personally think media-makers/ producers (re: artists, musicians, filmmakers, other creatives) have huge responsibility in this, and i also think the white supremacists in power aren't going to change just because some people are filing complaints like "wake up" or "its not fair." Why would you change a system that greatly benefits you? so yeah basically i think we're participating in ideological war thats happening right now as we speak. You're either for disempowering whiteness and empowering non-whiteness (black, brown, etc), or you're not.

10)what do you consider your race to be? asian-american

1)Have you felt racism/discrimination by other dancers?
I've had girls tell me that I was "prettier than the other black dancers" since they were "fat/masculine looking". Which just refers back to this narrow minded idea of black women being unattractive or overweight. So...not directly but I was made keenly aware of how black dancers were perceived by other dancers

2)Have you felt racism/discrimination by customers?
Yes. Being constantly compared to chocolate is kinda cringy

3)Has the racism you experience differed by club/location?
Yes. It was much harder for me to get hired in mixed clubs back in Atlanta than anywhere else I've worked (Myrtle Beach, Jersey). Customers from up north seemed to like me more too

4)Are white dancers treated differently? How?
I'm more than certain that white dancers don't have to deal with being fetishized or deemed "cheap" on nearly the same scale/manner as WOC dancers (at least not racially anyways). That and many of them fit mainstream beauty ideals so they're more likely to cater to a wider spectrum of customers. (and to those of you that are quick to reject this idea, google search "beauty" and tell me if you're seeing mostly caucasian models)

5)Do you think racism or sexism has at all impacted your decision to get into sex work? How?
Yes. I've contemplated quitting and was at times exhausted by the fact that many of the customers I had were creepy white guys with black girl fetishes

6)Have you struggled to find work elsewhere?
Outside of sex work? I'm in university so this doesn't really apply to me. Stripping-wise, it's been really hard for me to find mixed clubs in Atlanta

7)Is there a difference in black/brown patrons treat black/brown women compared to white dancers?
Yes. I've had guys automatically shut me down OR tell me that they didn't usually like darker skinned girls but I was pretty, spoke well, blah blah(and many of these idiots were often as dark as me).

8 )how do things like racism and sexism effect your life?
I'm really wary of white men now (especially older white men) and am not as attracted to them as I used to be (i'm not going to automatically reject them...but I won't be as obliging in the pursuit) Is this unfair of me? Maybe...but it's honestly no true loss to anyone seeing as I have no desire to really pursue anyone at the moment. That and my boyfriend gets to hear me complain about work lmao. I wouldn't say that these things carry a heavy burden on my conscience since I still work every week to make a check. At the same time, there are negative aspects of sex work that many dancers face that are ultimately unable to be ignored

9)what are some things we could do to minimize racism in sex work?
File class action lawsuits against clubs that are known to have discriminatory hiring practices and/or facilitate hostile working environments to WOC dancers. White dancers shouldn't be complacent or in denial of what's going on. Simply feeling sorry for us doesn't do shit. Actually listen to the experiences of black dancers and don't stand around when you're seeing racist shit from either management or some asshole customer

10)what do you consider your race to be?
    Black (West African parents)

    Hey awesome_irl, nice response.

I'm a white dancer who cares about the experiences of black/brown dancers. During my time working, I have seen things happen that were anywhere from shady/creepy to flat out racist. Granted, we are in our line of work to be objectified/fetishized to some degree(and I think that is hard to get away from) But that can certainly be a slippery slope, and it can result in discriminatory business practices. I'm interested in your experiences with being hired/not hired because of your race.

Also, what do you think of this website?

    https://www.tuscl.net/club.php?id=2082

They put down "ethnicity" for certain clubs, and while most are "mixed," some are "white and "latina." In any other line of work, a business owner/landlord could be sued for this, as it's definitely discriminatory. It's also hurting a vulnerable demographic, as some racist customers will not give a club a chance if they perceive it as "all black girls." Not that black dancers want to be around racists, but that's still a lot of money being taken away from people because of racial issues. Thoughts? Opinions?

Managers will never explicitly tell you that they're not interested in you or that they've fulfilled their racial quota. However, they'll instead outright lie to you and tell you that the club's "slow" (when it's a full house), that they're not hiring (even though you'd hear of another girl that got hired the following week), or that you're just not what they're looking for (blind to the fact that these same managers are more than willing to hold onto drug abusing, overweight, or 60+ yea old dancers despite frequent complaints from the customers)

I never took any of what I've seen or read on TUSCL seriously. Many of the "white" clubs do have some women of color...though I'm not going to leap on the idea of auditioning at those lubs. If anything, the most jarring part about it is that the fact that some of these clubs are organized along racial lines shows that they're being explicit in their discriminatory practices. Oddly enough, no one really seems to bat an eyelash

Every club I worked at Ive seen blatant racism. From we aren't hiring to we have enough black girls. I'm a white dancer in the Midwest. They told a good friend of mine, who was really classy, that they just have too many issues with black girls. Ugh, I avoid racist clubs as much as possible. It does seem in this industry that racism is somewhat tolerated do to not having the knowledge or resources to fight it.

I will answer this as a cam model

1)Have you felt racism/discrimination by other cam models? No, not on the sites that I am on. I would say that the foreign sites have a less racist and xenophobic attitude than the American sites. So, many of the other cam models are friendly towards each other

2)Have you felt racism/discrimination by customers? Yes, I also get strange xenophobic answers as well when I say that I am of Caribbean descent. Some guys think that I do not speak English or ask me dumbass questions about Rihanna or Shakira. Often guys ask if I do voodoo or drink rum all day. Sometimes, I get guys into raceplay and naziplay but I block them because I do not cater to that fetish on cam. However, I rarely face racism or xenophobia on my cam sites. Some of the foreign owners boot guys for saying racist things.

3)Has the racism you experience differed by cam site? Yes, the American cam sites can be more racist than the Latin-American or European sites.

4)Are white cam models treated differently? Of course, they are treated differently. However, camming is pretty equal when it comes to making money. Women of color can make as much as white women or even more. Nevertheless, women of color should expect to be treated like a fetish or novelty at some point in their careers.

5)Do you think racism or sexism has at all impacted your decision to get into sex work? No, I knew there will be racism, sexism, xenophobia, and other things in this industry. I knew that the Western standard of beauty will always be White, Blond,Christian, and thin. Everyone who does not fit into that standard of beauty will expect to be treated less than. However, you will get tons of guys who enjoy you for you

6)Have you struggled to find work elsewhere? No.

7)Is there a difference in black/brown patrons treat black/brown women compared to white cam models?

Yes, many black and brown patrons think that white cam models are superior to their own women. In addition, black and brown guys might also ask the white cam models to engage in raceplay. However, you will also get those black and brown guys who worship their own women like goddesses and do not see white cam models. You will also get black and brown guys who want to talk about raceplay with women of color. I had some black American clients wanting me to engage in some raceplay fantasy where they see me get sexually violated by white men. Yuck! In addition, I had black and brown clients give me more money if I say that I never seen a white penis before. However, I quickly remove those clients because I will not allow that type of behavior. Many of my African and Afro-Caribbean clients prefer to see a woman of color than a white woman. American guys are a bit different But most of them will see girls based on what they like.

8 )how do things like racism and sexism effect your life?

It does not because I knew it was going to be there. However, it helps that I do not allow myself to become a victim either. When something racist, sexist, or xenophobic happen to me, I fight back hard. Since I was a little girl, I knew that I will be treated differently than white girls. It was very interesting because I went to school with nothing but blacks, Asians, and Latinos. But everyone was lusting over the few white people at school. So it is not really a shock to me. It sucks but that is how the world works.

9)what are some things we could do to minimize racism in sex work? No one should stand around and allow racism to happen. On those foreign sites, you can block and report guys for making racist statements. American cam sites can learn from those European and Latin-American ones

10)what do you consider your race to be? Afro-Caribbean/Latin-American descent

4)Are white dancers treated differently? How? Yes. Customers treat them better and are rude to darker completed women. Customers just prefer blonde with big boobs all American Dream girl. It is what it is I'm glad I got fake tits now best decision I ever made not just for work.

6)Have you struggled to find work elsewhere? Sometimes

8 )how do things like racism and sexism effect your life? Sometimes it hurts but it doesn't really effect my life I am very confident plus I know they're being racist, I watch closely how the treat white dancers vs. black dancers.

9)what are some things we could do to minimize racism in sex work? I don't feel like we can do anything to prevent it. The managers and customers need to stop being racist

    No

2)Have you felt racism/discrimination by customers?
Once. A very famous hip hop mogul got mad at me because he thought I was Cuban. ?

3)Has the racism you experience differed by club/location?
Yes. I have danced in New England and Florida (as ell as a few other places) there were maybe three black dancers I ever worked with up North, I felt like they have a much harder time getting hired everywhere but esp. in NE

4)Are white dancers treated differently? How?
?? No opinion. I was treated differently at the club I worked at the longest because I was a top-earner and I used to bring food for the staff the day the kitchen was closed.

5)Do you think racism or sexism has at all impacted your decision to get into sex work? How?
Nope. Well, maybe. I think it is a sad fucking state that in one of the wealthiest countries in the world stripping was literally the best money I could earn with my diploma (before college degree); there may have been a few other ways for me to earn 100K a year at 20-22 years old but I am hard pressed to think of any.

6)Have you struggled to find work elsewhere?
Yes, but now after having my own business I would never do anything except have my own business or strip because working for other people is horse shit.

7)Is there a difference in black/brown patrons treat black/brown women compared to white dancers?
I can not speak on how other dancers are treated by customers because I generally work alone all the black dancers I have been friends with would not have the same customer base as me due to difference in style/ body type or whatever.

8 )how do things like racism and sexism effect your life?
I do not allow them to affect me personally but I must say I hate racists almost as much as dog abortion doctors, child molesters and Kanye West.

9)what are some things we could do to minimize racism in sex work?
Minimize racism in society and stop trying to put people into boxes, stop making race an issue or a box to be checked and the next generation won't hate or be afraid of people because of the amount of melanin they have in their bodies. Stop thinking that what the media tells you is true. Teach your children to refer to people as "the girl in the red shirt" instead of "the asian girl". Racism is a huge threat to my country's future and it is so stupid and archaic. Did you know there is a direct correlation between a person's intelligence/education and their tendencies to be racist? Maybe that is where we start. Make education easily attainable in this country; and without crippling people with debt.
