    Default Moving to Neighboring State

I just got approved for an apartment in Vancouver WA but I work in Portland, OR. WA has no income tax from what I've heard (although they do have sales tax unlike Oregon... Guess I'm doing most of my shopping across the bridge) Since I am a private contractor, can I still claim that my business (myself) is housed in WA? Should I be looking into switching my Oregon tax professional for a Washington one?

A lot depends on where you are earning revenue. If you are actually earning in Oregon, Oregon has the right to tax the earnings you have in that state. If you are domiciled in Washington, that state has the right to tax your world wide earnings. Since Washington has no income tax, that is not a big worry. Further, Washington's sales tax is only 6.5% statewide and local sales taxes can raise it to 9.9%. In Oregon, there is no state sales tax, but cities and counties have the right to impose a sales tax. If you are in the enviable position of being able to live in Washington, work in Washington and shop in Oregon, you might have the best of both worlds. As I wrote above, if you earn money in Oregon, you are subject to Oregon tax.
