    gurls talk: sexuality and stripping

Model, actress, and cover star of i-D's Female Gaze Issue Adwoa Aboah is on a mission to get girls across the world to open up about mental health, body image, and sexuality through her project Gurls Talk. In our new three-part series, we travel with the young advocate to LA, to meet the city's strong and powerful women making a stand for change. In part two, Adwoa investigates the City of Angels' stripping scene; it's currently worth one billion dollars, and employs more women than ever before. Adwoa meets dancers Shay, Kasey, and Alabama to explore how they embrace their sexuality, why they have chosen this career, and dissect the stigma surrounding pole dancing.

One billion dollars in L.A., you say?
    Hmmm.
Not really buying it. But I was only a part of it for 30 years, so what do I know?
Now escort scene? Yes, for sure.
Maybe they'll explore that industry next.
Thank you for posting this. I'll definitely be watching it.

California has a GDP of $2.448 trillion. (That's with a T folks.) So yes, it is possible that stripping is a $1 billion (with a B) business in LA. By contrast, state wide, education, health and other services is $44 billion, real estate sales and leasing is $42 billion, and transportation and utilities is $39 billion. California's economy is about the size of Brazil's. Or, if it was an independent country, it would be around number 8 in size of world economies.

I just wish dancers, would stop exaggerating their take home pay. The average dancer is NOT making what they claim per night... Some nights I was making just as much, if not more as a cocktail waitress, and got to leave sooner.

Just dont say anything at all. And stop posting your money on social media! Just tacky!

I know nothing about the L.A. scene. But my basic math skills tell me that 1 Billion = 1,000 x 1,000,000. So am I to believe there are a thousand clubs there together averaging one million in annual revenue each? I know, it's an average. But even if 100 were making several million a year it seems like an exaggerated number designed to create a headline.

Yes, but LA GDP is circa 800 billion with a B. So are we comfortable saying stripping is 1/800 of LAs total output?

NYC GDP is 1.4 Trilion with a T, btw.
    Where Am I? Missing NYC
