Default I just found out that I am blind

I do not mean blind as in seeing with my eyes blind, but I'm blind seeing with my mind. I do not see images in my mind, I can't. Any images formed at all will look at most like a 2d distorted shadow, a transparent figure that you can barely distinguish, or something like a blank page out of a coloring book.

What is so weird is I just learned about this last night. I have went my entire life believing that everyone saw images in the mind like I see them. I never had a single clue that something was wrong. I always thought that someone telling me to picture something or another, it was all figuratively. I had no clue people could clearly see vivid images in their head.

What is so weird is I just learned about this last night after speaking with a friend of mine. He was describing something that happened to him, and he described it in good visual detail. At first I thought he just had a very vivid imagination, but then I thought twice about it and decided to ask him about these vivid images he was talking about. I was intrigued at his imagination, and I mentioned that his way of describing what he was talking about was nice. What made me see what actually was going on was when I said "wouldn't you really like it if we could take these thoughts and print them like actual pictures? That way, we can always have them in visual form to look at and remember." He looked at me really confused and asked me why he would need to print them if they were already in his head. I didn't understand. So I found out that this disorder exists, and it seems like there is a 99.9% chance that I have it plain and simple. This condition is real, newly recognized by science and is called Aphantasia.

The hardest part to grasp is that people can actually see vivid images in their mind, and the same the other way around. People that can see vivid images can't see how others can't see them. When I found out I had this, my friend was still here, and I was asking him about how clear he was able to see images for atleast 2 hours straight. I didn't believe him, I thought he was just fucking with me. It took a lot of convincing, because I can't see those images, plain and simple.

Also, since I am just now learning about most people having an ability that I don't have, I still have questions. I asked my friend last night if he was really able to see these images in his mind as clear as a picture on the internet. I asked him if he could picture his brother in his mind just as clear as he could if he was looking at his Facebook photo. He said yes to both. He said he can watch an entire movie just in his mind from visual memory. I was like oh noooo way, no way, are you serious, nooo, it isn't possible, is it??? He was serious, it is possible, and I just don't see how because that is not how I see things.

Does anyone else here have a similar issue as me? I hear it is kind of rare like 2% of people maybe have it. Also, do you see things clearly like my friend I described above?

Yea, you found it. Did the results come up that you have this? If you are comfortable answering this. I was hoping I'd have more people to reply to have a discussion about it with. I started this because this really strikes my curiosity. I'm already a curious person, and now that I know the majority of people basically see a world I don't see, I want to know how you see it.

Here is an example of a discussion I would like to have. I had a discussion about this last nightwith the guy I've been seeing. This guy also has the disorder, and is pretty much the reason I found out. The only reason why I thought it was odd that my friend in I mentioned in my OP saw things so vivid is because of knowing this was a problem with people, and just finding out recently also. I have noticed I do things similar to the guy I have been seeing, like having to see something in person to be able to work with it. I can't tell you exactly what I want from the store unless I see it, so a good work around for that is to go online and look at the specific stores sales flier or something, so I can get a visual to choose from. I assume most people have the ability to see pictures in their head of what they want to eat and make a decision that way? Or atleast see some kind of visual to make a choice?

I don't have it. What I did find that bothers me is that some people have the ability to see things easily without trying, in perfect detailed 3D. I can see things, but I have to try, and I only get details of some things when I "zoom in" mentally and really think.

However, the down side is those people who see things have awful PTSD. Can you imagine, say, being a rape survivor and having a perfect recall of the rapist? Trauma added to an already horrible situation. I've read about soldiers who commit suicide because of images they can't get out of their heads. Perhaps this evolved as a coping mechanism.

Anyway I'm bringing the thread down but there it is.

What do you mean "zoom in"? What do you zoom in to? Would it be link zooming into a picture you took on a digital camera? Or do you see things like I do, very cloudy black is a good way to describe it, images don't form of it, but it seems almost like they want to. Do you see things in that cloudy way then zoom into it to form a life like picture? The most that forms for me is those clouds trying to form an image, and I can find what I'm thinking about within it usually, but I don't get pictures in my head, or colors.

So, questions for everyone. I'm probably starting to get annoying with this, but it is really hard to understand this, it really is. Can you REALLY see pictures, in your head? Life like pictures? Like you are looking at a photo album? Can you see all of the colors and all of the lifelike details? Can you see it as clear as a movie on TV? In real life 3d also?

And about the PTSD things. I may not remember images from it, but I do still remember the things I have been through, and I still vividly remember them. I remember the feelings, and I do still remember the details of everything. I don't see a picture, but it is still there. The clouds still form those images, and I see those clouds extra strong in my memory from the trauma from them. I don't think it makes it easier, I just see them differently.

Wait, some people can clearly see pictures in their mind's eye?
Like, as if they were hallucinating?

    I'm blown away.

I have always assumed that visualizing was a figure of speech, just that you were thinking of the characteristics of something, not actually literally seeing it.

I figured anyone who *actually* was seeing images was having some sort of mental illness, had a high fever or something to cause hallucinations, in other words "seeing things".

Have I been abnormal in lacking this ability all this time and never knew it? Wow.

How does one see these things? Do eyes have to be closed? I'm so curious now.

Yes, since I have never been able to see an actual imagine in my mind, that is what I assumed. I had no clue it was any different.

Yes. I can see a sunny day, I can see light in all its varieties, grass, trees, tree leaves, people's hair, plastic things, houses, cars, that sort of thing, and I can vary the light on them. But I can't see faces unless I really try, my brain gets lazy and won't do it. Clear as day 100% real life no. I can see little details only if I concentrate and "zoom in". For instance, if I imagine a blue crab, a Chesapeake blue crab, first he forms, then his claws turn blue, then his feet become clear, then his eyes, and so on. But for instance a car with advertising on it, I have to concentrate on what the advertising says and can't see the car body.

Well it helps to close your eyes. Then you just make yourself see it. Start with a clock. Look at the clock, then close your eyes and imagine what you just saw. Then open them, and add detail, each time.

So what do you see? Feelings and sounds? Temperatures? Can you feel a cold wind if you try?

Yeah if I were to , say, picture my mother for example I can see everything. Face in real life detail, hair, clothing including colors, walk, laugh, way she speaks, and the front of her house in 3d color real life detail.
I also have incredible life like dreams, is dreaming tied to that?

Wow! And does that extend to less familiar things, say, a flower you saw, or a person you recently met?

    I see nothing. Just blackness.

You can feel things too? like wind? no I can't and never knew this was a thing.

I do have vivid dreams and see things in my dreams, in color, feel things, hear things, but have never experienced this while awake with the exception of when I had pneumonia and a very high fever as a child.

This just "mind's eye" right, I don't think anyone is saying "hallucination" as in they literally see it with their eyes open. I've had those, mostly scary, and also had them when I was sick as a child. This is the ability picture something with your mind. So like if I was to picture a tomato, I can totally see one, and the wooden cutting board in the back. But this is me imagining the tomato, and it goes away when I stop.

I am starting to wonder if this condition is more common than realized? Since so little is known about this, then there are probably 1000's of people who have no idea they have it. I am almost 33 years old and just learned, and it appears that you did too? It could be that we aren't that different, and more people than we think has it, probably many more people. I honestly don't even feel that different, it is just shocking that people see things so visually and it is really weird to try to think about it and imagine it..

I can't feel physical things exactly in my mind. I can feel feelings. I remember feelings very vividly, I think it mostly replaces my mental vision. Any traumatic experiences I have been through are recalled by me emotionally like I am still there, just not visually. Another weird one is I had a friend tell me he remembers be in vivid detail down to smelling my perfume. I was like you smell my perfume in your memory? How in the world do you do THAT? That is weird.

I also have vivid dreams in color, lots of detail, when I have dreams. I honestly can't remember the last time I had a dream though, I don't have them often. Well, I don't remember them often as they like to say since we technically dream every night regardless.

That is crazy, so you can picture it, and see it in your head, full color, detail, everything? Wow. So it is like a mental painting you do? This is so neat that people can do this. I feel like a crazy person being so amazed over this lol but it is like holy shit my whole life has been a lie OMG.

    I'm having the same reaction.

It sounds kind of fun if I had this ability, to close my eyes and actually conjure up an image. It sounds like magic! but also a little scary.

It makes me wonder why I can't do it too!

I know, it leaves me in awe. It does seem like everyone can do some kind of magic now. This makes me wish they had more research into those of us who don't see images, and helping us understand how we do see. I'm still having trouble coming up with any explanation to how I see how I do mentally, or why, and how it works. I'll offer to be a research participant for it to learn.

Yeah, although the more familiar things I'm able to conjure up in my mind better unless I look at it longer

I was wonder how people with that remember things and this answered my question! This is interesting

Its visually sometimes more vivid than others.. Reason artists, crafters and other designers can create various artwork/Masterpiece or sketch figures with very little effort. Try forcing yourself to keep imagining themes, almost like playing a repetitive movie in a daydreaming state of mind. Overtime it can either become difficult to reset or stronger through practice with light off and reducing distraction. Things either slow down, fade or faces become distorted when becoming tired, taking slower breaths and falling asleep can happen. Looking at a picture every so often, closing your eyes and trying again helps refresh that image. Next time try staring at your hand for 10 minutes, close your eyes and attempt to draw the details.

Wait..this is mindblowing. If I close my eyes, I can totally conjure up images in my mind, heck I even do it with my eyes open. Is this test saying that if I am not hallucinating (Which I can do very well with hallucinogens) or dreaming lucidly (which I also do, I dream in 3D), then I'm mentally blind?
