    Dizzy "Heavy" Retinol Creams

So I really need to start using retinol/ Retin A. & I live in a super dry climate with even worse super cold winter weather.

This means I might do more harm than good by starting retinol over the fall/winter.

Feel free to recommend brands, price is not an issue.

Get retin a! Tretinoin The prescription kind (hear you can buy from all day chemist, never done it though). Way better and stronger than retinols I read.
Just REALLY get anal w your sunscreen. All day everyday. Moisturizer a lot during the day. And Put it on RIGHT before you turn your lights out as I heard even computer lights will degrade it. Start out slow so your skin doesn't peel super bad.

    Thanks this is helpful info.

I grabbed some L'Oreal cream to start but due to many factors I need to go to a derm doc & just bite the bullet with retin A. Beauty is Pain

I get my retin A from all day chemist and have never had any problems with them or the retin A. If you don't want to buy through them Obagi is a good brand, I think 80-100 per tube. I used it for a few years and then tried all day chemist because I am cheap as fuck and I thought it wouldn't hurt just to try it.

There's a definite learning curve to using prescription strength retinoids. Even if that is your eventual goal over the counter retinols (I like RoC) are good to use for a month or two as a prep for prescription strength stuff. And yeah, sunscreen, like hardcore sunscreen. BB creams or foundations with spf aren't strong enough when you're using this stuff. Whirlerz turned me on to sunbum and it is awesome and works well under makeup, too. I'd be happy to give you more info about using retin A if you're interested. I've been using it on and off for eleven years.

Aww, you mentioned me, you like me! Sorry, just a little down bout my phone..
Anywho, I use Eliz Arden ceramide (it's the latest one of that brand I believe) & this other, I guess it's considered a serum, but it's sorta lotion-y in a good way, Erasa XP.
& yea the Sun Bum rocks
There's Nurse Jamie, she said retinoids give you a shiny look? Idk. I have her face roller (it firms) w/tourmaline stones

What are you using it for? Anti-aging? I used it for acne when I was a teen. Maybe I should look back into it ?

I initially used it for acne initially but now I use it for anti-aging. I honestly think the best time to start it is in your late twenties to early thirties, that way it prevents rather than fixes. The biggest problems most people are going to have with retin A are avoiding the sun (seriously, sunscreen EVERY single day even if you just plan on running out to check the mailbox, I put mine on even if I don't plan on leaving the house) and with the initial few months where your skin is adjusting. There are a lot of things that can be done to avoid the uglies but most people are going to have dryness, redness, and flaking/peeling initially. Last time I checked it's the only FDA approved method for anti-aging. I've actually been out for a little bit and I can tell my skin is missing it.

While I'm thinking of it, any retinol/retinoid product marketed for day use is a total waste of money. Sunlight renders them ineffective.

Seriously, I ought to just write a long ass post when I have the time, because there's a lot of shit I wish I'd known when I started using it.

I have to use SPF 30 every day anyway. My body is tan and my face is pallid. It wouldn't be a huge adjustment for me. I am going to look into this too. Thanks for the heads up.

Retinol is typically what's seen in OTC retinoids. It's a lot less effective than retinoic acid, which is what you usually need a prescription for unless you order it from an online pharmacy that doesn't require it. Retinoic acid is what Retin-A is, and there are different potencies prescribed. Tretinoin is just the generic of Retin-A and all comparable retinoic acid products. The hardest hitting topical prescribed retinoid is, I think, Tazorac. This chart goes through the differences between the products, though it's not an exhaustive list: http://www.skinacea.com/retinoids/ty...l#.V917MJgrKhc

I'd just recommend starting out slow (applying every other day at first tops, and many people start out with only 2-3 times a week at first) and considering a moisturizer barrier first. So you'd wash your face with water and/or a gentle cleanser, moisturize, let it set for 10-20 minutes, then apply your retinoid. Retinoids break down very quickly in light, whether it's natural or indoor. So I keep mine in a bedside drawer, and I apply it after I've turned off my lights for the night. Sunscreen every day for sure, and don't wax or use laser treatment on any skin you've applied retinoids to within the previous six weeks.

Also, keep in mind most insurance companies won't chip in for retinoids unless your doctor prescribes them for acne. I think a lot of insurance companies also have age limits for tretinoin/retinoids--after 35, a lot of them won't approve any coverage.

Oh one more thing, be really sure you aren't pregnant/won't become pregnant. I hear it can cause birth defects (not for sure, but it's a risk)

If you want prescription tretinoin but your insurance won't cover it/it's too expensive, check out Curology (curology.com). I haven't used it myself but everyone on the subreddit Skincare Addiction loves it. It's basically a tele-dermatology service that will make a personalized cream for you with tretinoin and other anti-aging ingredients (they also do some acne treatments) and it costs $20/month. I believe you can get the first month free. I've heard nothing but good things about this service, and I've heard it talked about a lot (the only reason I don't use it is cause for $20 my insurance covers 3 large tubes of tretinoin lol).

I've been on tretinoin for the past year and a half and I still can't use it every night, but keep in mind that I'm also using an AHA almost daily as well, and started at 0.025% but I'm up to 0.05%. Hope to get up to 0.1% soon! At first there was tons of irritation and peeling, but don't let that discourage you! Just take it VERY SLOW, and make sure to simply your routine at the beginning. For the first few months the only other products I used were a plain, heavy moisturizer (Cerave) and sunscreen. My routine is normally 6-10 steps, but it's worth it to hold off.

If you start using retin A, don't overdo it. Using a 0.05% in strength every second day is good to start. Sunblocker is a must. At least SPF 50+, or 30+ if you stay in the house. I never found a dermatologist to prescribe it even though I had mild acne. So I started to buy it on the internet...canadian amazon used to have only for a really short time. Last week I bought it from tinobeauty.com. I hope I will actually get it. German authorities are so strict.

There are a few different prescription retinoids, I really like Tazorac or Micro Retin A, they are gentler than the original Retin A. Also, it helps to start at the lowest concentration, and to mix it half and half with a moisturizer if it's irritating.

If you don't have insurance, I believe you can order it from s Canadian pharmacy without a prescription now.

28 years of use, and she's 61 (in that video).

I think the lighting and the hair ages her in that video (early 40s)... but she can pass as 36 easily.

Have you seen Christie Brinkley, the model? She's on the cover of New Beauty magazine, she's 61.
She admits to using 'some' fillers/Botox
I call bs to all of them, sure they may use/have great results w/great products, but you need medical intervention (surgery/lasers/fillers etc) to look like that
& they use it to sell their prods, CB have a skincare line too

Yep. Do you know many many medical aesthetic treatments are on the market right now done by cosmeticRNs and dermatologists??? Sooooo many, at least a few dozen, and they have major results.

So these celebrities can even claim they've never had surgical interventions and still technically not be lying lol.

A cream can't really do much aside from hydrate you or temporarily fill in areas with silica to make it temporarily look like you regrew collagen.

The reason why people seem to like retinol is because it increases the skin cell turnover rate, which is why your skin often dries or flakes off using retinol. It's basically working like a daily very mild chemical peel. It's not useless, it's just not that's effective IMO compared to manual treatments in a medical spa.

Be careful! I'm currently faced with horrible huge purple (!) Cystic acne thanks to a UK tretinoin brand I've forgotten the name of. (I'll update when I wake up as it's 2am in UK) that a stand in dermatologist prescribed.
I used tazorac and differin in the past and they worked a bit but nothing ground breaking, although they didn't cover me in cysts!
If trying a new brand go very slowly and use a teeny bit. Dryness due to weather doesn't help.

^^^ It's because retinol is speeding up your skin cycle making your skin dry and flaky. The only way to counteract this is to add heavy oils which often are pore clogging oils. Lots of oils are good but most creams put in cheap synthetic (so it won't go bad) ones like mineral oil.

I've been using clinique dramatically different moisturising cream which does indeed contain mineral oil, now that I looked up the ingredients. It also contains alcohol I thought it was helping but maybe not. I was conned by the fragrance free claims thinking it'd be gentle.
I suppose a good moisturiser is a must if you're going to be trying these retin a products.

I wonder which is better, the heavy duty peels or the retin A?? I know they say they work by getting down to the dermis to exfoliate and not giving your skin a chance to gather wrinkles and acne by always exposing a new layer and making it regenerate but idk which is more helpful.
I also kinda feel like it may thin your skin a shitton? I have very thick strong skin so I'm torn. I don't like the appearance of thinning delicate facial skin
