    Default Basic terminology help

I want to make sure I'm getting all the terminology right when it comes to making a website. Forgive me if this has been posted a hundred times before. If there's an identical thread, please post it T_T

So what all is the difference between:
    1. Web host
    2. Domain name

And what's good other basic vocabulary if you want to create your own website

    Web Host via Wikiapedia

A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to make their website accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server owned or leased for use by clients, as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center. Web hosts can also provide data center space and connectivity to the Internet for other servers located in their data center, called colocation, also known as Housing in Latin America or France.

    Domain Name

A domain name locates an organization or other entity on the Internet. For example, the domain name

    www.totalbaseball.com

locates an Internet address for "totalbaseball.com" at Internet point 199.0.0.2 and a particular host server named "www." The "com" part of the domain name reflects the purpose of the organization or entity (in this example, "commercial") and is called the top-level domain name. The "totalbaseball" part of the domain name defines the organization or entity and together with the top-level is called the second-level domain name. The second-level domain name maps to and can be thought of as the "readable" version of the Internet address.

I got this info from google

OK... the easiest way to explain it is this. Think of a mailbox

The Domain name is basically the address that someone would write on the package (So what the person types into the address bar to get to your site)

The Web host is the actual mailbox where the mail is placed. (or the place that actually stores your sites content)

Some other good terms to know are:

SEO (Search Engine Optimization): Having some basic SEO skills/knowledge will help your site be ranked better in search engine results.

HTML and CSS: This is the code that web content is written in. The web can't actually read a picture. Instead it needs a string of code to tell it how to display that picture.

Now, chances are if you're just starting out you're not going to be writing your own code. Most web hosting and domain name services have drag and drop website builders that write the code for you based on what you drag and drop into the builder. I've been teaching myself code though lately and it's a useful skill to have. Consider doing some internet research to teach yourself at least the basics.

There are a million other things that would be good to know but I won't write a novel here! Feel free to PM if you have questions. There are lots of ladies here who have web design experience. Do some searches and you'll find some great threads on this forum. I'm half asleep right now or I would post some links. I'll try and come back when I wake up.
